Secret Service Agent Clint Hill talks about Nixon’s change between his Vice Presidency and Presidency. What really happened to Richard Nixon?

I hope this is the right sub for this, and I hope this doesn’t get overly political. But I am a huge history buff and am really into politics, so when I first heard of Clint Hill and his books, I knew I had to pick them up. I just started reading Five Presidents, and I saw that he gave an interview on YouTube earlier this year, so I decided to watch it last night (it was really good! You can watch it here: https://youtu.be/vzYwCmDDSLA ).

In the interview, he’s asked about which presidents had the most personality, and he mentioned that Nixon was the most cold towards the secret service while others like the Kennedys saw them as human beings just like them and befriended them. But what I found interesting was that he said that Nixon was much different during his Vice Presidency under Eisenhower and attributed his change in attitude to his new powerful office and his loss to Kennedy and the governors race in California. He also talks about Nixon preferring solitude, mainly working out of a private office in the Executive Building rather than the Oval Office. I don’t know why, but I’m really intrigued by this and was wondering if there were any novels or other sources that you guys would recommend that covers Nixon’s life prior to his presidency that may explain some of his behavior changes.
