A list of puns related to "Perceived Stress Scale"
Hi everyone!
Currently, I'm working on my master thesis. During this thesis, I have to build a system that can detect if someone is suffering (or shows signs) of chronic stress by analysing their text messages. To do that, I needed a dataset with text-based inputs and ideally a measurement/evaluation of their stress levels (to classify them into two classes: "suffering from chronic stress" "and not suffering from chronic stress").
After a long search, I finally found a dataset where I have access to text-based inputs of several subjects and the results of a stress-related questionnaire: the Perceived Stress Scale (version: PSS10). To ensure that the questionnaire does really measure the state I'm looking for (chronic stress), I searched for research papers to confirm my suspicion.
Unfortunately, I get rather confusing results: A few papers identify the PSS as a way to measure chronic stress while other papers do not mention this fact at all. Furthermore, I'm not quite sure if we can assume a chronic state of stress when the PSS only involves the perceived stress of the last four weeks.
Does anybody know, if the PSS can be used as a way to measure the degree of chronic stress an individual is feeling? And if so, do you have maybe have a research paper that I could cite for this? (I already checked the original research paper of Cohen et al. from 1983; here they mentioned that they still need to evaluate the ability to measure chronic stress with their scale.)
I would appreciate any input :)
For my dissertation I would like a larger control group to compare to my experimental group, anyone is welcome to take part and it should take around 5 minutes, please do note that this includes a perceived stress scale that will ask about your stress over the past month, if you have any other questions feel free to reply and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
How many of you are using the monthly Perceived Stress Scale Score on the headspace app? And do you find it useful? Headspace write about it here https://help.headspace.com/hc/en-us/articles/360048720853-What-is-the-My-Progress-Feature- I've been doing the score for the last 6 months or so and generally feel it only tells me what I already know. But perhaps it is a useful way of making me sit down once a month and asking myself "how stressed am I?" and hence what should I do differently next month. I'd be interested to hear others view of the score being on headspace and how you use it.
Hi, fellow r/indians!
I have created a Google Forms survey based on the Perceived Stress Scale (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perceived_Stress_Scale?wprov=sfla1), which is a widely used metric to asses the how stressed individuals are. Studies have shown it to be a reliable measure of stress and it also predicts depression, smoking use and objective biological markers of stress (among other things).
I've tried finding PSS surveys on Indians but have only come up with academic surveys in some colleges which showed that students studying in medical and other colleges have higher stress levels.
I know this subreddit is definitely not a good sample for India as a whole. Also, it is true that to translate the test into other languages one needs to be careful since the way the questions are worded impacts how people respond. Nonetheless I would be very thankful if you all take some time out of your schedule and fill out the anonymous Google form below. Your identity and email will remain anonymous though you have to use a Google account (to limit multiple submissions by the same account) to fill it.
It will atleast give us enough data to find how r/India compares with the mean stress levels in countries like USA. Mental health in India is very low on anyone's priorities and to help change the situation we need data first more than anything. I will post the results of the survey in the coming weeks, along with any interesting finds I get after doing a statistical analysis. Please feel free to pm me if you need any more information on the methodology.
Thanks!

I've read that in Japanese there aren't really stressed and unstressed syllables like in Western languages, that rather all syllables receive a uniform stress (it is only pitch that varies).
As someone newly learning the language however I tend to perceive strong stressed syllables. For example in δΊΊγ or δΊ‘γγͺγ I perceive a strong accent on the second and fourth syllables. I think is because I hear stress relative to my expectations. When speaking English we tend to read Japanese words with a "stressed unstressed stressed unstressed" (trochaic) pattern e.g. "HI-ro-SHI-ma". So the syllables I hear as being "stressed" are simply the ones I expected to be unstressed being more stressed than I expected. I find that if I focus on stressing these syllables more that I get closer to the native reading.
I wonder if over time I will start to perceive this as more of a uniform stress.
So I have been improving but I've been stressed lately and now my smell went from what felt like 85 percent to 40 percent....no other or at least new long haul symptoms.
I remember coming across a paper or something about the emotions that different people with different backgrounds/cultures used to describe either pieces of music or aspects of harmony (like scales). I can't remember details unfortunately, but I'm curious about any research on this.
I guess I'm especially interested on the emotional response to/description of scales/chords that exist in various types of music (rather than emotional response to specific pieces of music, though that sounds interesting too).
Any suggestions for reading on this type of thing? Thanks in advance for any ideas!
Hi Everyone. We are a team of researchers at Iona College conducting an online research study about allergies and perceived stress levels. The online survey should take no more than 20 minutes total to complete, and you must be at least 18 years old to participate. You will not be asked to identify your name at any point in the survey. Please click on the study link below if you would like to participate. If you have any questions about the study, please contact Nicole Doria at ndoria1@gaels.iona.edu. Thank you!

Is Water-Only Fasting Safe?
Ewa OgΕodek, MD, PhD and WiesΕaw Pilis, Prof.
Additional article information
Abstract
Background
Water-only fasting (WF) is a practice used to improve and maintain health.
Objective
The aim of the study was to show whether WF performed for 8 days may be a threat to the health and/or life of people undergoing this practice.
Methods
Twelve middle-aged men participated in the study. During the 8-day WF, the subjects ate no food except for drinking mineral water. Before and after WF, all subjects had a series of tests performed, beginning with the level of perceived stress and somatic measurements. The concentrations of creatinine, sodium (Na+), potassium (K+), total calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg++), urea (U), uric acid (UA) and total protein were determined in this urine and in the serum. For these substances, the values ββof clearance, renal filtration and fractional excretion were calculated. The osmotic clearance and free water clearance as well as the amount of daily urinary excretion of creatinine, Na+, K+, Ca, Mg++, U and UA were also calculated. Moreover, the concentration of glucose in the serum and the concentration of Ξ²-hydroxybutyrate in the plasma were determined. In urine, specific gravity, pH and osmolality were also measured.
Results
After 8 days of WF, the study showed a significant reduction in the level of perceived stress, weight loss, changes in body composition, dehydration, increased ketogenesis, hyperuricemia, decreased serum glucose concentration, and hyponatremia. These changes were accompanied by Na+, K+ and protein sparing, decreased serum Ca and Mg++ concentrations, and reduced daily volume of more acidic urine with elevated specific gravity.
Conclusions
After 8 days of WF, all subjects were found to remain safe and feel the sense of well-being. However, the appearance of the above-mentioned adverse metabolic effects, despite partially effective renal compensations, suggests that the further continuation of fasting intervention by the subjects would be detrimental to their body.

I started hanging out with someone of the opposite sex earlier this month.
Weβve seen each other pretty consistently since then (which is something I really look for- I donβt do well with inconsistency and yβall probably understand why).
So far he has shown me nothing but kindness and I have not picked up on any red flags. (I tend to be attracted to narcissists and I can almost always tell right away but Iβm a moth to a flame with them)
heβs not showing any signs of that. He mentioned a friend of his that has bpd and he seems to understand it. I have not disclosed my emotional problems to him (yet).
We had a sleepover over the weekend and spent the whole night cuddling intimately.
It was very nice and he offered to make me breakfast in the morning before I had to go to work. Iβm not used to being treated this way.
We didnβt have sex and I didnβt make a move because we never really talked about it before. And I donβt like making the first move unless thereβs some kind of discussion.
Iβm taking this really hard. Like as if heβs not interested in that from me.
Before I left I asked if he would like to do this again and what his schedule was this week. He said he is working but heβs free this weekend.
When I texted him later that day thanking him for having me over and letting him know I had fun, I told him I would be free to hang out on Friday. (I work two full time jobs right now so I have to make time to see him)
He said he might be visiting his family this weekend, but he isnβt sure yet and we can play it by ear until he figures out his plans.
Again, Iβm taking this as rejection as if he doesnβt like me anymore.
This is the first time he hasnβt given me definite plans/being kinda ambiguous and Iβm having a hard time coping with this.
I have been really stressed out lately and I donβt know if me being stressed is just making me crazy about little things in my personal life, OR he is trying to curve me and thereβs been a change in energy.
We havenβt really talked about what we want or our intentions, but we met on a dating app. I plan on asking him that soon since weβve seen each other a few times already.
Does anyone relate? How do you cope with this without ruining a potential good thing or getting to an extremely low point?
Do I say something to him? I donβt know where I should go from here.
The scale will sync your weight to the app without you even having to look at it. Then at your chosen interval you can go in and see your trend over time. Even better, export your data to excel so you can calculate the moving average, or use a scale that works with trendweight.com which does that for you.
Hello,
what do you think about integrating RPE for measuring the intensity of a set? In my opinion this would improve the ability to compare different sets, because I do not train every set to failure.
for example:
Set 1: 8 x 100kg RPE 8 (2 reps in reserve) => est. 1RM = 133kg
Set 2: 8 x 100kg RPE 9 (1 rep in reserve) => est. 1RM = 128.5kg
I am 26 in VHCOL with NW of ~300K. I have a very stable and low stress job with a Fortune 500 company. Been with the company for almost 4 years. Fully remote/office optional. Awesome 9% 401K match and good benefits. The problem is my TC is only $85K which makes me feel like an underachiever compared to all the fresh out of college folks making $200K at FAANG. I am able to make up for a lower salary through side hustles that now bring ~$2.5K+ a month with a high potential to grow. My dilemma is should I go for a higher salary/ high pressure job that pays $130K+ but takes away an opportunity to scale my side business/try new hustles or should I just keep my job and continue pushing my business forward?
