Hi, I want to hear about your P53 OLED display problems! Mine started doing this thing where the display would invert and garble randomly and I want to know how much longer it's got left in it. I don't think it's the actual display as the laptop spends most of it's time either shut and docked or open and stationary...there isn't a whole lot of moving around.

MY USE CASE:

• I have two machines I work with (see header) and I am currently running LinuxMint on both of them. With SyncThing on both,I am keeping some key apps in sync (my entire user folder without hidden folders, and then some select hidden folders to sync things like filezilla inis, etc.).
• All of this is working quite well. A particular challenge in the past was that I had serious challenges with the multi-monitor setup and my Nvidia GPU. This was resolved by sticking to an older kernel as the latest NVIDIA drivers and kernel versions were screwing up things, resulting in boots into VGA..
• Besides that, I use quite some amount of external hardware (Fujitsu scanner, Sony Digital Camera, Logitech WebCam, Bluetooth Bose Headphones). So I'd like a distro that keeps up with the latest drivers..
• I do some web development, have a couple of VMs (Windows for Adobe products for example), some financial trading (again mostly on Windows VMs due to lack of options) and then just have my personal stuff (photo and video editing).

As mentioned above, the sync solution has worked well as it allowed me to remain mobile without having to use third party cloud storage. Initially I had wanted to run my entire system on one machine with an external Lenovo Thunderbolt dock, but multiple screens, thunderbolt and linux just didn't seem to like each other (system would never remember monitor settings, waking up from sleep, all windows would be mixed up, a total mess...)

I know they say, "if it's not broken, don't fix it", but I am getting a bit bored of LinuxMint and it feels like development has come to a standstill, particularly when comparing to distros like POP OS or ZORIN OS. I miss some well-integrated features like proper window-tiling (2 windows per screen doesn't do it for me with the high resolutions and 27 inch screens I run..).

I'm looking for an ubuntu-based distro, doesn't have to be "bleeding edge" but also not PPAs with stuff from 2 years ago..

What would you recommend, particularly in view of my needs?

Note the Lenovo Mobile Workstation Laptop, which - while somewhat "ubuntu-supported" officially, is quite a pain in the neck with some linux distros..

Hi - did a fresh install of Windows 11 on my P53. Whenever I enable HDR, the laptop freezes up and I can't do anything else. If I unplug the power cord, HDR is disabled and it unfreezes. Soon as I plug it in again, freeze. New install, all drivers up to date. Any recommendations how to enable HDR without it freezing? Thanks

I did a quick benchmark between a X13 Yoga G2 (i7 1185g7, 32GB Ram), a P53 (Xeon E-2276m, 128GB RAM, RTX Quadro 5000) and a MacBook Pro 16 (M1 Max 64GB RAM).

I lol'd at the X13 Yoga G2 being able to compete with the P53's processor, but not too surprised, considering the 1185g7 is pretty peppy once you TPFanControl/Throttlestop it.

The MBP runs things fast and quiet, while the Lenovo's sound like they are about to take off when at load. The P53's Quadro 5k benched higher than MBP, but I think the MBP's much higher numbers for the CPU single/multi core scores give it a bit of an edge.

I have been using an X1 Extreme Gen 2 for a while now. I love it but I have really fallen for the build of the workstation P/T series.

I Love how easy it is to swap out keyboards and the build quality. The Thin and light chassis is nice with the X1 extreme but you can tell that it is at a compromise to thermals as well as (build quality is good but it doesnt have) that inherent ThinkPad quality of user serviceability.

I found someone selling a P53 locally, same specs as my X1 Extreme Gen 2:

Is it worth it to move over the the P53 or should I hold out for my holy grail the T15g Gen 2?

Light Vs. Dark and p53 Question

The recent seasons have had me wondering whether the darkness is the true final threat. Based on the dark future lore book, it is the immediate problem that poses the largest threat to Sol as a whole.

However, I do wonder since a lot of the lore points to Ulan Tan’s idea of balance being correct; what the implications would be for Guardians defeating or severely crippling the Darkness. Wouldn’t this tip the scales too much towards light?

I may be wrong on this, but in the unveiling lore book (p53) the Winnower says:

>However, without p53 as an enforcer, the body's utopian surplus of energy becomes a paradise for cancer. Cells cannot resist the temptation to steal from that surplus. Their genetic morality degrades as tumor suppressor genes fail. The only way to stop them is by punishment.

This description makes p53 look like a necessary evil to route out cancer. The Winnower then asks:

If p53 is an agent of Darkness culling the rouge cells, by weakening it severely could Guardians create worse chaos? Could this be the saga post Lightfall Bungie has alluded to? Oppressive Light rather than Dark? With how Guardians are wielding Darkness in a balanced form, is it possible we may be on the wrong side by choosing a side at all.

Unveiling

I've had a previous post about the performance of my P53, and I thought it was due to a faulty SSD. However, I switched to a Samsung 970 PLU NVME, and only marginal improvement. I then started from a brand new 980 PRO, and installed Windows 11, then immediately Steam and CSGO and Mechwarrior 5. And I am STILL getting 40-80fps in CSGO with all settings set to low in Full screen 1080p. My GTX1050 has better performance.
UserBenchmarks: Game 23%, Desk 91%, Work 21%

CPU: Intel Core i9-9880H - 86.6%

GPU: Nvidia Quadro RTX 4000 (Max-Q Variant)- 15.3%

SSD: Samsung 980 Pro NVMe PCIe M.2 1TB - 316.8%

I've tried older and newer GPU drivers, but nothing really helps. Sometimes the FPS will spike to 250+, which is what I normally would expect. This was purchased as a Lenovo Refurb unit, and unfortunately the warranty just expired (although it's had this issue since day 1).

To make matters worse, I purchased this as my Unity and Solidworks Rendering station, and it can barely do any of it. During gameplay or "heavy" vr work, the GPU get up to 62c and pretty much stays there. (as reported in Task Manager).

I've disabled hybrid graphics, enabled hybrid but set RTX as preferred for 3D... bios updates, pretty much anything you can think of, outside of repasting the thermal compounds. I've tried on 3 separate Win10 installations, and a Windows 11 install.

My P50 with a P2000 can run csgo at 120+ FPS, as well as unity.

I'm at the end of my rope for troubleshooting.

Hi I am considering getting a 5120 x 1440p monitor, and I want to ask you guys, if the HDMI 2.0 port can handle the monitors resolution? Or do I need some sort of a converter via the Thunderbolt 3 port?

They made no mention of p53; I'd just like hear opinions on its feasibility.

Today I repasted my Thinkpad P53 after owning it for about a year. It was always at 100°C when under any higher load and thermal throttled. My first attempt on a solution was undervolting but that didn´t help much an with Throttlestop i couldn´t control the "Intellegent Thermal Management", so I used Intel XTU and downclocked the CPU to 3GHz.

Now after the repaste with Arctic MX-5 it can run the 10min Test in Cinebench at 3.9GHz with the stock 60 Watts at about 80°C.

I attached a picture of the Cinebench score after the repaste. Unfortunately I don´t have a before picture.

The disassembly was a bit tricky but it was worth it in my opinion. The original Thermal Paste was completely dry.
