I remember reading a quote (don't know from whom) that if an Ancient Roman was transported to Europe in 1750 he/she could quickly adapt to the conditions of his/her new environment, especially if he/she was a peasant. There weren't many noticable changes in how both society and technology worked, likely he/she wouldn't find the developmental differences more jarring than if he/she travelled to a distant region of the Empire in his/her own own time (for example a Gaulish person being transported to Syria, or someone from Pannonia being transported to Libia.)
In 1700, general European science and technology were in their infancy and still relied on the dogmas of Ancient Greek philosophers like Galen. Pirate Culture was alive and well in the New World like the Caribbean, every tool from a scythe to a pistol were hand-made, and people still obeyed an autocratic ruler.
By 1800, a mere hundred years later we had steam engines, spinning mules, and modern commerce and increasingly modern political ideologies developing from this essentially Roman society.
By 1830 the air was full of acrid coal smoke in industrialized areas, steam trains carried goods around, new philosophies and religious ideas emerged, and there was even early direct-current electricity around, people like Faraday doing experiments and starting to develop combined theories of Electricity and Magnetism, eventually leading to Maxwell's Equations, and later Quantum Theory.
By 1900, a mere 200 years after the age of downtrodden serfs, pirate sea shanties, and absolute monarchs we can observe the direct ancestor of our modern world. By the 1950s there was Rock and Roll.
How did people suddenly change and advance this much in a so few number of years, especially since 1750 to a common peasant wasn't much different than 1300?
My interest has been piqued recently by "How to Hide a Task Force" and the analogy associated within for emission control and radar search and detection. I find this facet of warfare fascinating but I cannot find much history about it. How did electronic warfare develop in WW2 and afterwards? When did airborne and shipboard radar jammers, radar detectors and electronic intelligence become prevalent?
I have been wondering, what kind of technology will we not be able to survive without in the future?
I have thought of stuffs like electricity, internet and such basic stuff. I want to know about those technologies that are the unsung heroes of our everyday life
I believe the book was written in the 1970s. I seem to recall that Teddy Roosevelt was a character and might have even been pictured on the cover. I seem to recall that a paddle wheel riverboat was one of their invention. The cover of the book was mostly white and with a painted cover.
Any help would be appreciated.

What is a DAO? Standing for Decentralized Autonomous Organization, a DAO is an internet-native blockchain-derived investor-directed venture capital fund organization managed by all members. At its core they have an objective to provide a decentralized business model for all future enterprises. Mark Cuban called them βthe ultimate combination of capitalism and progressivism.β
One important aspect is that all code is open-source. This is done with the aim to eliminate human error, manipulation, and third parties, by having an automated crowdsourced process of decision-making. Unlike a company, DAOs have democratized organizations allowing all members to vote for any implemented change. The DA organization is represented by transparent computational rules, secured on the digital ledger across the internet, hardened against forgery by timestamping, and disseminated as a distributed database. The DAO is controlled by the members; no managers or basses are needed.
>Bitcoin in essence is the first fully functional DAO with programmed rules and functional autonomy through consensual protocol; the miners and nodes signal voting through support.
DAOs need four things really;
DAOs | A traditional corporation |
---|---|
Flat hierarchy. | Hierarchical. |
Voting required for any changes. | Changes demanded from sole party, voting may be offered. |
Voting outcome implemented automatically. | Tallied internally and outcome handled manually. |
Services handled automatically in a decentralized manner. | Human handling, centrally controlled automation, prone to error and manipulation. |
All activity transparent and public. | Activity private. |
Creation of a DAO:
How can I join a DAO?: Just invest in their token, and boom, youβve joined. The smart contract token you just bought establishes the DAOβs rules, most likely you have to stake the token or another in the DAO to get voting rights and influence operations. T

From my previous post, here, that aimed to clarify what the Men of Gold and Stone were, as well as describing a potential Man of Stone, we now have an idea on what the populations of man were like in the original empire of the DaOT. However, the reality was that it was actually a pretty shitty time for a lot of people involved.
As a reminder, the DaOT's population consisted of 3 separate transhuman races of man, these races consist of the Men of Gold, a genetically engineered master race that arose due to certain levels of selective breedinng, the Men of Stone, a race of cybog intelligences specifically called "organic intelligence, created artificially", and the Men of Iron referred to the Abominable Intelligence so infamously known in the setting. But among these 3 baseline humans are assumed to still exist, and they weren't placed at the top of the totem pole. Instead, they were likely at the bottom, alongside the Men of Gold and Men of Iron, with the Men of Stone at the top. This was because of the fact that during the course of human history, the Men of Stone played the most important role in helping man spread across the galaxy and forming the Interstellar empire of the DaOT:

Let us begin then with an axiom; a base truth that cannot be refuted or argued against.
We attacked the human race over 80 years ago, by our calendar. We fell upon their planet with savage speed, and superior technology. Confident, we sent our legions down to their home-world, bringing death and annihilation in our wake.
They had only just begun interplanetary travel. They had stepped upon their Moon, but had only sent robotic probes to their nearest planet. They had yet to even reach one tenth of light speed. We were in all ways technologically superior to them.
And then... we lost.
Be it upon their vast, turbulent oceans; be it in their teeming skies; or be it on their blood soaked and verdant soil, we lost.
They were more ferocious than we thought they would be; they negated our technology by utilizing their savagery to get close to us; they undid our stratagems by being more innovative, more cunning, more surprising than we could imagine you could be at war.
And then, finally, they were able to wrestle our own ships from us, able to turn our glorious invasion into a retaliatory campaign of retribution.
And they destroyed us.
Even now, as we sit here in the broken remains of a hallowed hall of learning, where generations of our ancestors have come to learn and expand our species knowledge, we can still see the damage done by the human occupation. Even now we have not even begun to repair the legacy of that war.
I return now to my home-world, after 75 years as a prisoner upon the human planet, and can see perhaps most starkly, what you have no doubt normalized.
We are a ruin of what we once were.
And the final part of this truth is; we are also pathetically grateful to these humans.
They spared us.
That they showed us mercy.
Yes, we have lost our fleets and are forbidden to return to the stars.
Yes, what were once our own ships now orbit our world, watching for any of us to try and negate this order.
Yes, we are powerless in the face of the human stern judgment, which floats above us with wary eyes, never ceasing in their observations, always ready to punish us if we transgress their edicts.
But we have learned to be grateful have we not?
They showed us more mercy than we were going to show to them. We met them in battle and they bested us and then showed a compassion towards us greater than we had planned for them.
This is an axiom. This is the truth, which we all see before us.
But I was asked to attend this Sym

Quorum of War (Part 2)
Silver Wisp sat and let his body rejoin the ship, his skin flowing into his seat and console. Applications immediately started flooding in from researchers, the curious, the angry and the blood-thirsty that wanted to accompany the mission. An Old-Fleet going to a legitimate war on the far edge of human space? This would be a research/entertainment opportunity of a lifetime. He checked the social credit of each applicant, cross-checked their references and issued a hundred passes. Out of sheer perversity, he carefully ensured that none of their personalities would mesh. So they enjoyed combat? No problem.
He sent a note to the Quorum of war that he had assembled the required witnesses and would depart once they arrived. He had a sneaking suspicion that it wasnβt going to be that easy.
Ambassador Rowan felt uncomfortable as she approached the Silver Wisp. Common courtesy dictated that the Commander was both the man and the ship and you were expected to acknowledge that. It was truly vast, a gently sloping dome that only seemed to expand. She was aware that he had been constructing it for nearly ten millennia, a labour of love equivalent to her forest domain. A nagging fear of what she had unleashed on the brute Xenos had dragged her from slumber in the soft greens of her home and into this dark, metal strangeness. She made a call to the ship and in clipped tones announced, βThis is Ambassador Rowen, Signatory to the Quorum of War, requesting permission to board, as is my right.β
Silver Wisp grinned as he answered, βWelcome Ambassador. Your rooms are prepared, Iβll drop by when you are settled in.β
Her needle-craft was taken under autopilot and interrogated then pulled deep into the vast craft, liquid metal walls sliding around her ship. Finally, it was gently deposited in a vast hall, even as the walls were sealed without a sign or mark to indicate a way out. Beautiful and practical she thought. Her ship unsealed and revealed a forest.
She drew in a breath, the sounds and smells of her homeworld filling her lungs and dappled daylight feeding her now happy leaves. She stared about at the tall trees, ancient and real. This was no illusion, this was the work of ages. Why had he grown this? She had no record of her people travelling with him before. She dismissed the βW

In that lecture, he said that expanding education would decrease inequality because most of the US' inequality increase from the 70s onward was due to Skill-Biased Technological Change, since technology significantly benefited those with high skills, while those with low skills were more or less left out.
This makes sense, and I can definitely see why giving low-skilled workers more skills would decrease inequality (as it could help them capture the gains of technology)
but dont we need low-skilled workers, like in services, for instance? Dont we need taco bell workers, janitors, etc.? If everyone had a college degree or more, who would be / who would wanna work in these jobs?
