A list of puns related to "Null modem"
Hi, I found this tutorial which seems like something I am interested in making but I would like to make it so that instead of sending the data over serial usb, it send it over 5v rs232 (or rs422, 485 but rs232 seems most standard) is there a way to connect up a serial port like this directly to the analog in pins or something to allow it to receive serial port data from the computer?
I have two laptops, both running Windows 95, and one of them has a broken floppy drive so serial is the only way I can get stuff on and off it for now. If I hook up either computer to a modem, I can load hyperterminal and connect to COM1 at 9600/8/N/1 no problem. AT OK. But for whatever reason, when I put a null modem adapter on the cable and connect the two computers together, I get nothing. Any ideas?
I been thinking since I cannot find anything longer than 6 foot in Canada of a Null Modem female to female I was wondering if any of you have ever used two DB9/DB25 to RJ45 email connectors and run a CAT5 or 6 cable between them?
I hadn't seen this posted yet but Null updated his website http://nullge.net/ with a whole lot of new content, and then did a huge live stream that seems to be modem noises and maybe SSTV? Anyone have ideas how to deal with this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iq5JYdFLXi8
The website also has the videos in what I assume are the correct order now. Point is I feel like there's a lot more going on.
Have any of you in the PLC world ever come across a DB9 serial cable with a toggle switch to swap the TX/RX lines built in to the cable? It seems like I'm always having to dig around for a null or cut up a cable in a pinch when I'm in the field and I'd like to reduce the amount of small odds and ends floating around in my laptop bag. Just curious if anybody has seen something like this.
Repost, this time with flair.
Title pretty much covers it. After hours and hours of troubleshooting I figured out that my null modem serial cable was... well not so null modem.
After a few more hours of butchering another serial cable, attempting to make my own null modem adaptor I have been defeated. No matter how I arrange and rearrange the pin out two what should be correct, I still cannot get it to work.
Due to this, I am looking to find somewhere I will be able to buy one of these. I can see many online, however I am hoping to get one this weekend and not have to wait till Tuesday.
If only Maplins was still around...

Bought this on a whim via eBay! Great condition and the wordprocessor is easy to use and more than good enough for taking notes and composing drafts on the go. Love the instand-on. Really instant on.
But I can't get the null modem connection to a PC to work. I sued the instructions here https://www.ncus.org.uk/ffeb04.htm
I used a standard 9-pin female to female null modem cable and Hyperterminal on the PC. I can get 2 PCs to send text to each other. I can also get the PC to send text to the NC100 terminal program. But I can't get text from the NC100 to the PC. This likely means I will only be able to send documents from the PC to the NC100 only.
Does anyone here have any thoughts?
For the most part my system works except I get these RS232:Error framing baud errors popping up often that wrecks havok with the BBS Telnet Server software.
Can anyone recommend settings or changes to minimize this? Or should I be using tcpser instead?
Any recommendations for connecting a Macintosh Classic/SE/Classic 2 to a PC by means of serial modem?
Looking to see if anyone can help me out. I'm looking for a null modem cable with USB for my Dell Powerconnect switch that I recently bought. Was hoping someone had a spare laying around or one not being used.
I can pay with just about any preferred method. Paypal, Crypto, whatever else.
Older tech at work, serial only connection, need to replace cable with longer one but can find no info about the sig pad being a dce or dte device. It has a female connector, which in strict RS232 standards should indicate dce but this is not a closely followed rule so connector type could be meaningless. I know I could test the voltage at the pins to determine this, but breaking out a meter at work will immediately raise the boomer threat level to DEFCON 2. I have a straight-through cable with a null modem converter availabe but I'd prefer not to trial-and-error it (again, due to boomer panic concerns) if there is someone who can tell me if these devices are considered dte to dte or dte (PC) to dce (pad). Surely we're not the only business out there still using these serial only topaz pads.
Help me if you can, plox!
I've bought a 'old' Dell PowerConnect 3524 switch which I have to configure using a serial management port.
I have a USB-RS232 adapter and a friend is sending me a rollover cable (rs232-rj45) and I have a rs232 breakout box. But which pinlayout should I 'make' or use for this switch?
According to the wiki there are 4 types:

Can anyone clarify for me the cable I would need to setup this switch? I know the switch connection is male, and the cable connected there is female. But I dont have a serial connection on my computer, so I would have to use USB. Does a cable that is USB to null modem do the trick? Then just use putty to log on? I ask because I am seeing several different kinds. It specifically says crossover, so if I buy a usb to serial null modem cable, will it be the correct cable? Or do I need to make sure of more details?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi guys,
Recently found myself in a ridiculous position where I needed a null modem cable with flow control to flash a BIOS update onto a Watchguard, and realised we had none in stock and waiting for one to be ordered and delivered was wasting time I didn't have so I turned a couple of old HP console cables into a DIY null modem cable - I've posted it on my blog here: http://fueledbymocha.co.uk/diy-null-modem-cable-with-hardware-flow-control but if mods prefer, I can transfer the contents into this post.
Thought it might be handy for someone at some point, if anything it gives you a reliable pinout for the HP console cables :)
