A list of puns related to "North Indian culture"
Title.
Not only are they not treated as equals and are discriminated against they almost have no significant hold on Indian politics OR pop culture. Instead they are evolving culturally separately from the rest of India and it shows when you view north Eastern social media profiles. This has also lead to a chunk of them to have separatist ideals. I know Indian politics is largely population based but still they should definitely have more significance than they do now
By North Indian I specifically mean someone from UP, Bihar that didnβt end up migrating.
From my understanding and what I see is that the culture is almost the same besides living in 2 different countries, but Iβm honestly not sure. What things are specific to each culture?
Also do muhajirs go by Urdu-speaking, muhajir or Karachiite/Hyderabadi(or whatever city in Pakistan there from)? Iβm from the US but if someone asks I usually just say my family is muhajir since Urdu-speaking just sounds kinda weird to me.

I'm from Canada and have always wondered what the religious (especially Christian) culture is like across Europe. Specifically wondering if the new "Hillsong" type of church a thing over there?
I guess the church would be defined like this: trendy youth pastors fresh out of school, Internet-savvy online presence, big shiny new church buildings that double as community centres (shared office space, nurseries, sports arenas etc), slightly more progressive views on sexuality but fairly traditional when it comes to having kids and a nuclear family, "youth" oriented worship focused around modern music like pop, rock, hip hop etc
I know that I shouldn't get too worried about what people say online, but today was one of those days where I am letting the generally negative perception many Redditors have of Indians get to me, to the point where I get worried about what people would REALLY think of me in real life. Negative comments about Indians and India tend to be far more upvoted than positive ones, which can show that more people are inclined towards the negative comment.
I am trying to unlearn this insecurity, but as I use Reddit almost daily, it would be nice to know that at least a few Redditors wouldn't have negative preconceived notions of me in real life.
I hear this sub is really chill and friendly compared to many other, so thought it would be a good idea to ask here.
edit: A huge thank you to everyone who commented, i feel more confident with myself now :)
Hi Guys,
Im moving to NCR for the first time in my career of ~7 years and Ive heard that the work culture over there is different from what we have here in Bangalore. That mostly they would address the boss by "Sir" and backstabbing & buttering is commonplace.
Is north India really that different in terms of work culture ? Or are people generalising too much ?
Some specific stories :
1.] My friend told me about her company where the guys behave worse than girls. They are engaged in constant buttering, rumour mongering, spicy talks and even after her telling them twice about their girlish behaviour no heeds were given.
2.] Many stories about : The famous chalta hai (its alright ) attitude & dekh lenge (we'll see it later buddy)
3.] Even the bosses stress more on bakarbaazi ( non-sense talks) rather than actual work. Following unnecessary rules is >>> than actual work delivered.
***EDIT : Yes understood that work culture is similar everywhere.
I have not seen even a Single Durga Puja Pandal where they have brown coloured Durga idol. But now I think apart from Fair complexion of skin, they are now starting to aspire for even more north Indian, perhaps European facial features in the images of Goddess Durga. I find this distasteful and an insult to the local women and their beauty.
Look at this image

Now I see this woman dressed as Durga in posters in many places in Kolkata

At this point of time, even if they bring an East European Model as Durga with all the makeup, Bengalis will rejoice.
Shameful
My parents are from India, but they moved to America and I was born and raised here. Growing up, I never built a connection to my heritage or culture: I never learnt the language, never consumed the media, and can only remember going back to India twice as a child (my parents were fighting with my family in India for 10+ years, so I never built relationships with them). My parents never made the effort to teach me about my culture (they focused more on my education and adapting to America), and I grew up in a pretty white town, so I never thought about my culture as a kid.
The first time I met other Desis was in university. They were really surprised by how uncultured I was, and I was really surprised by how in-tune they were (speaking the language, participating in Indian sports, consuming media like movies and songs, etc.). Jovially, I quickly got dubbed a 'coconut': brown on the outside, white on the inside. I'm not upset by the nickname because it's an apt description of me.
Interacting with my university brown friends made me feel a little guilty about being so uncultured. At the time, I rationalized I had nothing to feel guilty about: it was my parents' responsibility to immerse me in the culture, but they never did. But, now, as an adult, I have the power to educate myself about my culture.
... but, I don't really want to. I can't find anything fun or motivating me to do so. My friends tried showing me movies with English subtitles, but everything just went over my head and I simply wasn't entertained. I've tried watching other media on my own, but I never got far. I don't want to learn from my parents either (I was talking with a brown friend about my parents and he remarked, "Damn, you parents only ever showed you the bad stuff about India." He was talking about being vegetarian, no parties/drugs/alcohol, sexism between me and my brother, and family drama, but suffice to say, I can't say I've learnt anything good about India other than the food from them).
I've been wanting to learn Japanese since I was 12 because of my personal interests. But, because of my speech learning disability, I don't think I'll have the bandwidth to learn my mother tongue in addition to Japanese. Learning Japanese feels like the final commitment to not learning about my heritage and culture. So, before I go ahead and learn Japanese and essentially give up on my culture, I wanted to hear advice from y'all on what I would be missing out on if I do this.
TL;DR I'm

Just curious and interested
It seems like every next comment here is bashing north Indians for ruining "their Bangalore" and not using Kannada. Let's just say north Indians didn't ruin Bangalore, Kannadigas ruined Bangalore.
The tech boom brought a lot of economic migrants from all over the country to Bangalore, and guess what the citizens of Bengaluru did? They cashed out on the opportunity to make money, each and every landowner in Bengaluru became filthy rich.
North Indians didn't cut trees here, Kannadigas cut trees, to make way for their multi-story buildings, to sell or rent out to North Indians or make way for wide roads. Each and every decision that led to the demise of the "old Bangalore" was made by Kannadigas, not north Indians. All the lawmakers in your legislative, in your municipal corporation most of the bureaucrats in BDA, BBMP, BWSSB and most of the police is and has been Kannadiga.
North Indians are just a convenient punching bag, an easy target for you because you don't want to fathom that, it's you and your leader's greed that led to this. Your apathy in ignoring your civic duties and not making your politicians answerable while you and your leaders filled their coffers led to this.
Bengaluru is such a great example of turning a beautiful city into an urban dystopia because most people here who should care are busy minting money. When it's the time to finger point, oh it's the north Indians, because you don't want to introspect, you don't want to blame your apathy, your ignorance, your greed, your politicians.
Somebody commented here North Indians refuse to learn Kannada, when did anyone refuse to learn Kannada? Nobody came to me and said you have to learn Kannada and I said no to him. You have to understand most people who are migrating here are not kids, they are adults and very busy with their lives, it's very difficult to learn a new language at this age. Forget about Kannada, many north Indians in Bangalore are not even teaching their kids Hindi. I myself tried to search many places to learn Kannada online but couldn't find any place convenient enough for me.
If you are really serious about the use of Kannada in Bengaluru then stop whining about it and actually start promoting, make it easy and convenient to learn. Take inspiration from British Council and open up Kannadiga Council or something like that all over Bangalore, learn from Christian missionaries and their bible study Sundays and put notices for Sunday Kannada study groups at colleges, office
... keep reading on reddit β‘Two weeks ago I was going on a walk when I came across a very strange sight outside a building under construction. A shabby pomerenian was sitting outside the site. It looked shabby, dirt all over its white coat. It also looked lost. Once you have spent 20 years taking care of dogs, you know what a lost dog looks like. I immediately knew that it was out of place over there. In such situations, the best person to ask is the watchman, because they make friends with street dogs, since the street dogs add a layer of security at night. So when I asked the watchman of the construction site whose dog it was, he said that the dog was thrown out of a car at night.
That dog was abandoned by its owners, thrown out of the car once they realized they could not take care of it. The dog, fortunately had found its home among the construction labourers who took care of it because a few days later the dog looked clean like it was given a bath. I found it surprising because the dog itself was not one to make any trouble. It was a very well behaved dog. I approached it and fed it some leftover rotis. One of the labourers walked came to talk and I asked them if the dog made any trouble for them. They said it didnβt, but she was bleeding the first day it came. I asked from where? The labourer sheepishly pointed at the dogβs behind.
Then it dawned upon me that this was a female dog, but when I examined her, she was already spayed, that is, the dogβs reproductive system was already removed. So she should not be in heat and have her periods. When I contacted my municipal animal vet, he came and examined her and informed me that it such problems were common in pedigree dogs. He said that the dog should be fine in a few days and left.
This was one of the many incidents I have witnessed where the owners are incapable of taking care of a pedigree dog.
One of the houses down my road owns a German Shepard. Magnificent animal. But a complete psycho. That dog is chained to the balcony all day. And there was literally one month when the family went away and left the dog chained on the balcony for the whole month. They hired a man to give the dog some food, but because the dog was not socialized and trained, it did not let the man come close. So the dog ate, no problem, but spent the whole month chained, wallowing in its own feces and urine.
Then there is this friend of mine, who claims to be an βanimal loverβ and then out of nowhere gifted himself a Saint Bernard and a Boxer. The

as for Algeria, when I read the news paper or when I met two Arab only speakers . the only thing I read is the racism and hate speech from the Algerian Arab speakers where they use the worst words and nicknames they could find against anything that is Amazigh and they specifically target the Kabyle and Kabylie since it is the one who was and still fighting for the right of the indigenous of Algeria.
These Algerian Arabs once you look into their profile, they always carry the flag of Algeria, support Palestine , and you only find the name of God, Prophet and Islamic quotes on how to be good and so on. those people it is not only one or two it is a big percentage of the population and the comment section. maybe you can tell me that they are just to make fun or they are the military secret service who wants to spread false view but I also have met some who think kind of this and why specifically targeting Kabyle in particular?
I am going to explore this by myself by speaking to many Algerian Arabs face to face and I am not wiling to hurt them or whatever. I want just to get their real opinions without trying to play the good person, so I can make my final conclusion about this very lasting topic of hundreds of years.
by default, the World knows that Amazigh are the indigenous people of North Africa. Why I am saying this because the Amazigh have no other land to show off their culture and languages. they are not going to Yemen or Qatar to celebrate Yennayer for example. They do it like Arabs do in their motherland in El Djazira!!!.
I would like to hear from you guys what you think, I really need your honest opinion whether it is good or bad. please tell how do you think and no need to make things look great.

I have only ever worked for Pvt Indian companies (for 5+ years now) so not sure if this is the norm in MNCs etc as well but I'm really fed up with the culture of people from lateral teams who may be even a single designation higher than oneself not responding/cooperating unless your superior who is of the same title/designation or higher than them gets involved? Yes some may genuinely be busy but they seem to respond as soon as the boss writes to them? Aren't we all working towards the same organizational goal? I cannot fathom someone else's work getting delayed/affected by my inaction, that is so unprofessional and disrespectful! I have also experienced certain higher-ups responding to calls/mails by my counterparts who are males but not mine. Was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience.
I live in the Pacific Northwest, where major cities such as Portland and Seattle have good walkability and decent public transportation. Iβve recently visited Vancouver, Toronto, and NYC and found their metro systems to be wonderful. I would not eat very healthy, but doing a ton of walking made up for it. I hate how people here view public transportation as a bad thing and car-culture as a good thing.
Iβm currently in the process of moving from Oregon to Florida. Floridaβs major cities like Orlando, Tampa and Jacksonville are infamous for their massive suburban sprawl. Iβm currently looking at auto-transportation costs. To ship one car, it costs a whopping $1,700 to ship. That is roughly a month and a half of rent. Without a car, I could hardly go anywhere. There is no walking and cycling infrastructure and pedestrians are treated as second-class citizens.
I donβt like suburban car culture because itβs unsustainable environmentally and financially. One wouldnβt see nearly as many people walking and cycling in places like Dallas and Houston as opposed to San Francisco and Seattle. This is because too much car-centric design makes it dangerous and uninviting for anyone outside a vehicle. When you get caught in traffic, the commute becomes miserable and depressing.
I get that many people like driving and road trips. I love road trips. However, thereβs a difference between driving as a recreation and driving as a necessity. After the pandemic started, cars have become very expensive. On top of that, car insurance, gasoline and car maintenance are also expensive. I see many Americans brag about paying lower taxes than (Western) Europeans. Yet when you add up all the insurance costs combined with state and federal tax, weβre paying just as much as the average Scandinavian while getting far fewer benefits.
Cities that are car-oriented are terrible in the long run. If I were to go to San Francisco or Chicago or Boston, I could just buy some good clothes and fly there the next weekend. I wouldnβt need to worry about shipping my car over. I could walk to work or the mall in those cities. In other large cities like Phoenix or Atlanta, this would be almost impossible because of their oppressive sprawl. Iβve had a far better experience in Vancouver than I did in Miami as I could take public transportation and get around the city at a low cost.
However in majority of my country, thereβs no way you can enjoy life without a car. If youβre planning to go out and part

I went to one of my brother's wedding. He had an estimate of 3-5 Saalis. They all somehow got an opportunity to steal his shoes and demanded a hefty price(In Lakhs)Wtf?
When one of my family members said 10K-20K Matra diye hudaina, those dumbass saali said 'Jamma 1 lakh pani xaina hamro Bhinaju Sanga re'.
Somehow we ended up giving them a discounted amount. One thing that haunts me is 'Were these Jutta lukaune tradition, sangit and haldi in our culture(Be it on Newari wedding,Bahuns-chhetris,rai,limbu or anyone)?
I'm not hating just asking whether these are or not.
I'm an Indian guy in my 20s and over the years I've slowly and steadily become worn out by the way Indian men are talked about.
I feek criticisms of Indian culture and its misogynistic elements are warranted - I was raised by a single mother and saw first hand some of the more caustic ways women are subtly dehumanised by Indian families. India and South Asia have a ton to do to catch up with progresses in women's rights around the globe.
But at the same time I don't know why I take a lot of the criticisms personally. Probably because I think those discussions come from a place of bad faith.
Sometimes I feel even on most liberal subreddits and forums , when i bring this up, people use the plight of Indian women as a cudgel to be racist to me and my kind. Their concern trolling is less about empathy for the victims , and more about hatred for the enemy.(in this case Indian men).
I've become self conscious about this and I dont know if I'm being paranoid but I subconsciously feel everyone will see me as predatory , not least because I'm 6'5 and long haired. I feel I'm seeing signs of me being treated as an object of revulsion everywhere - on the street, in work interactons. Any words of advice?
Normally when I go out to eat I tip 50, but today my friend advised 20 chaalra 50 endhuku ivvadam ani. So what's the amount should be tipped so that both sides don't feel embarrassed ?
I feel Punjabis on both the sides should be very similar. Or rather I believe that the are. Whenever we visit Amritsar, some road sign with Lahore's distance always pops up. It has been a dream to visit and see Lahore coz "Jine Lahore ni dekhya oh jammeya ni". Here are some examples of the cultural practices I am talkin about:
Now you get what I am trying to say. Also I apologise if anything above was offensive to anyone. Would love to see where both the sides differ and are the same.
This is a chance for you to get rid of any stereotypes of us. Anything you want about the Indian culture or education that intrigues or confuses you, go ahead. I can answer as much as I can, based on what I know. Be open minded, go ahead, don't worry about offensive things. We're here to learn.
So I'm a average student of 11th , but recently I've started noticing this promotion of 'excessive' study culture in TV ads n stuff , like you should study , study , study the whole day everyday.
The main "culprits" in promoting this kind of things are edtech companies like Byjus/Tatastudy/vedantu/AakashByjus etc.
I'm pretty sure most of you would've seen that jungle safari ad by Tatastudy , where the child is told by the father "beta , 10 minute padhai karlo, kal test hai" I'm like , why even ? Like why are you on A HOLIDAY , a day prior to the test , like do one thing properly , either sit at home and do study or go on a trip after , why mix both ? , Kinda same with that AakashByjus ad , "Class mei Aakash , Ghar pe Byjus" like if you have sooo much study to do then do it all in class and give the students some leisure at home.
I do kind of understand that yea , sometimes you have to study that much after 12th or so , but why target these , "yea get in our classes to study more" ads to pre 10th kids ? Don't they have better things to do like focus on hobbies , get fit , etc ?
This doesn't even stop at just pre 10th , these Byjus ads even target a audience of pre 5th kids , like they should be probably playing more than studying.
And even parents don't condemn this kind of stuff , they'll just go with it and actually just enroll even their 1st ka kid in classes , without hesitation , ofcourse not all parents but a concerning amount of them are , just because that one Sharma ji ka beta scores 90+ in all subs , and in my experience , some of these "ati topper kids" don't even turn out to be functioning teenagers.
This also feeds into the Indian parent mentality of "90+ se kam aaya toh useless" and forcing most students into picking science stream , which for most of them turns out to be extremely hard , which they picked because their parents forced them to or that one regressive relative who says "beta science mei hi scope hai , wahi lo"
Let me know your opinion on this or if you have anything to add
Finland definetly has a lot of difference between the North and the South especially when it comes to nature, environment and population. The more North you go, the more and more sparsely populated, forested and wild the land becomes; 50% of the population lives less than 150 kilometres from the South coast and 90% of the people live in the Southern half of the country. The South has almost all the large cities and agriculture, relatively densely-populated countryside and milder climate. While the North has a lot of national parks and large areas of almost uninhabitated wilderness with vast forests, bogs and treeless fells, and a wery low population density.
So basically we are like Canada, but bit less extreme.
East-West divide also exists to some degree, altho it's much more historical and cultural and not that prominent today. Historically, Eastern Finland maintained the "original" Finno-Ugric culture (such as pagan traditions and folklore) for a lot longer that the West, which was more heavily influenced by the Swedish colonization and christianity. Eastern and Western Finns also spoke Finnish with a wery different dialect, and to some extent still speak today.
Genuine question, is it in the marketing? Or budget for distribution? Or is it the population of India that makes it harder for content to proliferate? I'm just wondering this after realising Kendrick Lamar etc got so big worldwide, but Hanumankind etc (who is also an english rapper) has barely left the south of India. Just an example, I know other factors like timing also factor in.
Any insight would be appreciated.
It should either be like in Europa Universalis, with multiple sub cultures that are all accepted whoever forms germany, north german federation or south german federation or any empire that has one of the sub cultures as their primary culture
Or only one massive german culture
Or at least 4 different cultures for Germany and 1 or 2 for Austria
