Do I have nonallergic rhinitis?

I got tested for allergies recently! Came back dust mites and roaches! Never had any problems before this September at all! Got a sinus infection and my nose never been the same. My only symptoms is swollen turbinates and occasionally little mucus. Those symptoms don’t change. They got worse over the months. I really hope the meds ain’t do this because I felt like they helped with mucus but yet my turbinates got worse. It makes no sense. I don’t get flare ups. I can walk outside in the cold and my nose would stay the same. Only time I get relief is in the shower, laying down and random times of the day one will open. Please help!

Need advice on nonallergic rhinitis that exclusively appears when lying down (sleep)

Anyone here that is/was in the same boat? My sleep quality is horrible because of this and it tremendously effects my quality of life.

I had already had a septoplasty and two follow up surgeries (cautery of the inferior turbinates). Had about 6 different nasal sprays (including antihistamines, antiallergens and capsaicin) and tried anti-snoring devices, but nothing seems to have any effect. Air quality in my room/around my house is fine, so it's not that either. I've been tested for allergies (via the skin) but it was negative.

Saw two different specialists but they don't seem to have a clue and their only advice was to try out different nasal sprays.

edit: for clarification. One side of my nose (usually the right side) is almost sealed shut during the night which gives me trouble to breath, especially during sleep. The specialist said this is because of a swelling of the membrames when lying down, caused by non-allergic rhinitis (cause unknown). It disappears automatically 1-2 hours after waking up.

Any tips for NonAllergic Rhinitis?

Recently found out exactly why I've been having a congested nose at night (tried allergy medication, drank water, nose strips, nothing helped). Basically, you get the same congestion from allergies....but its not allergies (so allergy medication does nothing to help). Short of becoming a permanent mouth breather, I have found zero solutions. I strongly suspect it is the weather where I live, since when I travel to more dry regions (recently went to Vegas), and have zero issues there, but can't move so will have to try to live with this. It has been getting progressively worse the past 2 years, to the point I sleep around 5 hours a night, and most of that is spent tossing and turning (the only relief I get is when I move my body or just stand up straight, my nasal passages temproarily open up to enable me to brief).

Any tips or advice by those in the same position?

Nonallergic rhinitis

Hi all, About 4 years ago I moved from the desert where I grew up to a high-humidity city. Since then I have had an itchy, stuffy nose, loss of much of my smell, and itchy inner ears year-round. I recently got nasal surgery to open up my nose a bit more, which helped some.

About a year ago, I started getting an itchy, tingly mouth and lips after eating peaches or nectarines.

I have gotten two full panel skin allergy tests, once two years ago and one yesterday. I brought in fresh peaches to test. I only react to the histamine, which means I don't have allergies and cannot be treated with allergy shots.

Does anyone have any more information on nonallergic rhinitis? There is not very much information and the allergist did not have much advice. It seems like it should not make my nose and ears itch. The peach reaction is a mystery.

Thank you for your advice and information--i would love to breathe clearer and be free from stuffiness. Being able to eat peaches again would be a bonus!

Exercise with nonallergic rhinitis?

I (F26) was always slim as a kid and a young adult because even though I've always been a boredom-binger, I also got a ton of exercise. Parents always had me outside, I walked to and from school, always moving.

Sometime in college, though, I started developing symptoms of nonallergic rhinitis. It's a condition where exercise triggers symptoms similar to upper respiratory nasal allergies. And it's only gotten worse as I've aged. I love walking, but it takes barely anything now before I have to mouth-breath aggressively just to get enough air and my nose runs like crazy. It's horrifying and embarrassing. And it's not just walking--every cardio activity I've tried induces this in minutes.

As a result, I've gained a significant amount of weight and I hate it. I acknowledge that part it has to do with my crap eating habits, but I know that not getting exercise is making it worse. Does anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions for exercise that may not trigger it?

My FiancΓ©e has HORRIBLE Chronic Sneezing! We Tried Everything and I don't know what else to do

My FiancΓ©e is a 26 y/o, 5 ft cute little thing, but when I say horrible sneezing, I mean extremely loud and violent sneezing fits that can leave my ears ringing without warning. When I first met her I noticed the sneezing, and she told me "its just a sensitivity thing to the cold..." (LIAR!) Then the summer came and I was like "so are you allergic to hot too"? So it turns out she is allergic to cats and apparently many other things and though we do have 2 cats today, there was a very long time before she moved in with me and there were no cats present and was sneezing anyway. She also said she has been like this her whole life.

So today we live together and you can hear the 'wurrrr' sound of air purifiers emanating from every room in the house, and the cats are not allowed in her office or the bedroom, where she spends most of her time sneezing anyway. I even bathe the cats regularly and groom them. I wash my hands, towels, bed sheets, and everything extremely frequently! I even have robot vacuums and mops that in all honestly are pretty awesome and do an amazing job cleaning the floors. I even go around with a very expensive fancy hand vacuum and keep cleaning wipes stocked up and frequently clean all frequently touched surfaces throughout the house. Though after all that, it really doesn't seem to matter what I do though because even when we are not home the sneezing persists. We have traveled on multiple occasions and even stayed at a friends for 2 weeks who were clean freaks and had no animals and sneezing persists no matter where we are. In the car, in our house, while taking a shower, at a friends house, at dinner, on a plane! Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter!!! You name it and she is sneezing! And god has its been tough with this pandemic because people have on multiple occasions freaked out at us like she is firing off a shotgun and going to kill them, or maybe she just sounds like one.

The sneezing pretty much starts from the moment she gets up in the morning and happens all the way until she falls asleep, and as it turns out, it is a great alarm clock for me, but there is no off button. I will say some days are worse than others, and on these bad days I can count as many as 100+ very loud sneezes, and on these days I can see she is literally exhausted from it to the point of passing out. I've never seen or heard anything like this in my life. She also has horrible sinuses and literally has a to make trips to spit in the sink multiple times a da

Or if I'm wearing a croptop and my skin is exposed and it won't stop until I cover my back. Never seen anyone else talk about this phenomenon so I dont know if it's just me :/

A solution to managing nasal congestion at night?

I have received a turbinoplasty and septoplasty.
I still have congestion and it occurs randomly but its the worst when it occurs at night. It really fucks my sleep up.

So now, I have been researching and came across Nastent and Alaxo Nasal Stent. Unlike other stuff such as nasal dilators and nasal strips and sprays, this physically forces the inside of your nose to maintain some space for airway. It has been researched and both have been approved by the FDA for things like sleep apnoea. If it is successful for people with sleep apnoea, then it means there nasal congestion is part of the issue of causing such obstructions. And hence, in my opinion it would be useful to nonallergic and allergic rhinitis sufferers who get bad sleep due to chronic congestion.

Link showing stents can be useful in maintaining nasal airway.

Do I count?

I have nonallergic rhinitis and for years it was a struggle to get diagnosed. For the past few years it's been pretty under control but as a kid I'd essentially be sick from October to mid December and March till April. (Not uncommon for me to still be suffering a little during the winter too but the main times I was affected was around Halloween and around mid March).

It is a chronic condition that mostly impacts my breathing and my energy levels and ability to focus when it's bad. (Snot and coughing is fun, but the coughing at least has been mostly resolved for now) It's a condition with triggers and doesn't have any cure but does have many treatments.

I feel like I don't belong because I don't think I have it all that bad, or from having my stuggle belittled.

My question is, do I belong in this community. I know my experience differs greatly and I likely have it easier than many with conditions that effect everyday life more than what I have.

Sinus and/or allergy issues - How connected are they to TMJ (especially if they're contributing to ear fullness or ear pressure issues) and what have you done to help?

Hi again, everyone! Who has (or suspects they have) sinus and/or allergy issues in addition to TMJD? If you do have issues with sinuses and/or allergies, what has helped you and how connected are these issues to TMJD? If you have on/off ear fullness or ear pressureβ€”like I doβ€”AND sinus and/or allergy-related issues in addition to TMJD, what helps this symptom in the long run: treatment for the sinus/allergy issues or TMJD?

Context/brief recap of where I am with treatment and symptoms: After months of dealing with a dozen+ dizzy spells (though this has greatly improved over the last few months), on/off "airplane ear" (ie ear fullness and pressure) in the left year, etc., I decided to learn if I have a form of TMJD, after learning that TMJD seems to be the root cause of these and similar issues for many. I learned that I do, in fact, have a form of TMJD. I'm early on in TMJDβ€”I rarely have jaw pain and/or trouble chewingβ€”but my lower jaw is much smaller than my upper jaw, my mouth is very limited in how wide it can open, my TMJ dentist could hear clicking on both sides, I have forward hear posture, a bit of an overbite, etc. I'm about 7 weeks in with TMJ treatment; in my case, this means I'm 7 weeks in with wearing a customized, removable appliance/orthotic to help my lower jaw. I wear it at night and while I exercise, and I see my TMJ dentist every 2-3 weeks (or sooner, if needed) to have it adjusted, and communicate with him as needed between visits.

Meanwhile, an allergist recently diagnosed me with nonallergic rhinitis (i.e. I have chronic congestion, but no environmental allergies). This didn't surprise me, as my regular (if not daily) congestion has been pretty obvious.

Aside from the annoyance of feeling congested so often (the nasal sprays she prescribed me have been helpful, I think, but haven't cured this problem by any means). She also told me that the nonallergic rhinitis "might" be contributing to my on/off ear fullness and pressure...but I've also been told that my TMJD symptoms "might" be causing this...I've also been told the migraine aspect of my symptoms (i.e. my dizziness was centralized, and has been referred to as possible vestibular migraines) "might" be causing this symptom.

And, while I get they're all rightβ€”any one of this issues (if not all) might be causing this symptomβ€”it's still frustrating to not know for sure. All I really know about my ear fullness/pressure, as I've described before: (a) it's similar to the feeling w

Daily tinnitus attacks due to my orthotic and right after an adjustment? Has ANYONE had this experience?! Please, would really appreciate insight ...

Hi! I know I've posted part of this before in another thread, but at this point it's been a full week of daily "tinnitus attacks" and I'm at my wits' end. I am beyond emotionally and mentally exhausted/frustrated/confused by this new symptom. I get that my TMJ dentist is saying I "need an adjustment" (and I'm seeing him again on Monday) but should I REALLY be having horrible, daily tinnitus attacks right after my last adjustment (which was the 31st)? Am I just someone who needs adjustments more often than 2-3 weeks (the average I've typically seen)? Is something else going on/causing this (ie a medication, my posture, early signs of a cold, etc)?

The full context: Back on March 29 (three weeks in with wearing my orthotic), I suddenly experienced loud ringing, which lasted 30-45 ish min. This isn't a normal symptom for me; for months, I've "only" had an on/off ear fullness. I happened to also have an appointment with my neurologist that day as well, and she started me on nortriptyline (10 mg, each night) and clonazapam, as needed for ear fullness. Meanwhile, two days later, I had my orthotic adjusted. My TMJ dentist said what I had experienced the other day was due to inflammation and I needed an adjustment. Once he adjusted the orthotic, the orhtotic immediately felt more comfortable, and I hoped that was the only fix I needed. Two days later, the "tinnitus attack" happened again. I called him, and he advised I try wearing it 24/7 instead of just at night and while I exercise. Despite this, I've still had an awful "tinnitus attack"β€”seemingly out of no whereβ€”EVERY SINGLE DAY. Some of them, like yesterday's have been especially excruciating. :( Meanwhile, I also have been to an allergist and have been diagnosed with nonallergic rhinitis; both she and the TMJ dentist seem to believe that the the nasal spray I'm now on might help this ringing issue, with time.

I've stayed in contact with my TMJ dentist, and I'm going on Monday to get another adjustment, but ...I'm still very confused. Has ANYONE ELSE had this type of experience? If this really is just from the orthotic, then wouldn't that mean the last adjustment "only" lasted two days? Maybe it's the wrong orthotic or my jaw is just overly sensitive? Maybe it's not from the orthotic at all and I need to reevaluate migraine meds with my neurologist or something else.

Please, any thoughts or suggestions (or if anyone can relate to a similar experience) would be extremely appreciated. I can't bare having thi

Bad breath that lasts for a year

So i’ve dealt with bad breath for almost year and a half. It started just before first quarantine where i noticed a different taste in my mouth over day. I’ve never ever had any problems with bad taste or breath before this. I kind of ignored it and thought the problem will dissapear on its own. In december last year i realised i might have tonsil stones and i clear them on regular basis. Basically get them everyday since i have a lot of crypts on my tonsils. Until then to this day im still trying to figure out what could be causing the problem. I have a sweet taste in my mouth even tho im not diabetic and im eating just as i ate before bad breath first occured.

When i try to french inhale i can smell a sweet smell aswell. I do use nasal steroids since i have nonallergic rhinitis and my only symptom is clogged nose that occurs often. When i stick my finger under my right tonsil it smells of tonsil stones. Is it possible that this could be the cause of my taste and breath? Also i never flossed until now and i’m 18. My teeth are healthy and only thing i could mention is that i have both wisdom teeth partly out so there is gum covering them. Any opinions or ideas on what it could be?

What helped me with the "lump in throat" feeling from LPR

I wanted to share what worked for me in case it helps other people! For reference, I am 32F and weigh 130lbs.

I felt a lump in my throat at the end of July, and freaked out thinking something was stuck in my throat. I gave it a few days to go away on its own, but it didn't. At one point, I freaked out because I felt like I couldn't breathe that well, so I rushed to my general doctor. She said she couldn't feel anything abnormal but referred me to an ENT. The ENT put a scope in my nose and looked around, and didn't find anything. Both doctors suggested it could be LPR. I didn't really believe them because I strongly believed there was something stuck in my throat. I went to two other ENTs, did an ultrasound, CT scan, Xrays, and went to a GI doctor. The scans were all normal and didn't show anything in my throat. What's even weirder is that I felt whatever was in there moving from my vocal cord area to my nose, and sometimes to my chest, and a lot of times it felt almost sharp (like it was poking me from the inside).

Eventually I accepted that it could be LPR. I also realized that I was stressing out about it a LOT, which was probably not helping the situation. Here's what I started doing:

  1. Eating less acidic food (followed Dr. Koufman's "Dropping Acid" book)
  2. Drinking 1 cup of low acid coffee with low fat milk (my usual creamer was causing a lot of mucus)
  3. Started taking Omeprazole (I don't want to take this forever, but we'll see. Not sure if it's helping as much as the other things I'm doing honestly)
  4. Taking alginate after eating/drinking coffee and before going to sleep
  5. Drinking alkaline water
  6. Did allergy/food allergy test, I'm only allergic to dust mites but I have nonallergic rhinitis which causes mucus/post-nasal drip
  7. Started using fluticasone spray, one of the ENTs recommended it for the nonallergic rhinitis
  8. Quit my stressful job (I know this might not be possible for everyone, but basically try to lower stress. My throat felt almost at 100% literally the next day after my last day at that job)
  9. Started IGNORING the feeling of a lump in my throat, because that was the only way I could make myself not think about it constantly
  10. Vocal therapy/SOVT exercises because I am a singer and I freaked out thinking something is wrong with my throat
  11. I don't eat after 8PM, and I log my food

I want to try taking probiotics because I keep seeing that they are really helpful. If anyone has a good brand they recommend, I would to kno

Rhinitis: How do you identify triggers? When do you give up?

I don't want to be a drama queen, but I feel like my allergies (rhinitis) are debilitating. I'm constantly tired because I can't get a good night's sleep. And that has downstream effects on every aspect of my life. Oral antihistamines don't seem to do anything, even though I do have "allergic" type symptoms (itching, sneezing). Nasal steroids help a bit for the stuffiness, but they make me sneeze in the moment, ugh. still, I try to force myself to do it daily.

Is it normal to just never have any relief? How do people live??? :( :(

My allergist has not been helpful. He kind of just asks me what I think it is, and what I want. But honestly I have trouble identifying, I just feel like I'm constantly going through tissues. It's hard to see any patterns related to season, environment, etc.

So do I just give up and say there are no triggers, and just live like this?? (my allergist kind of said this)

Based on what I've read, it's likely I also have a nonallergic, vasomotor component, which is hard to treat.

I'm thinking, maybe I have multiple triggers, which makes them hard to identify. Maybe I should try to keep a detailed journal? What does that look like? I feel like I'd have to track everything...

At what point do you just give up and say, well there are no triggers, just live with it?

tl;dr Failed to control my rhinitis nor identify any triggers. Any tips for identifying triggers or is it normal to just have to give up?
