Personal album rankings (13/39): Nashville Skyline

[Had some fun and ranked all 39 albums by His Bobness. Everything you are about to read is simply my opinion; whether you agree or disagree, let’s have a healthy, respectful dialogue in the comments!]

#13 - Nashville Skyline

Released: April 9, 1969

Produced by: Bob Johnston

Nashville Skyline is so often discussed as a novelty (β€œIt’s Bob’s country album!”; β€œHis voice is so different!”) that I occasionally forget how much I like it. Fortunately, all it takes is a brisk 27 minutes to be reminded of how solid this album is.

Coming off the pared down John Wesley Harding, and particularly the last two country-tinged tracks off that record, it’s both enthralling and satisfying to hear Dylan explore this sound further. Sonically, it’s a total success, thanks to Bob Johnston’s production and the monster Nashville session musicians that elevate each song to a higher level. We were already lucky enough to have Charlie McCoy, Kenny Buttrey, and Pete Drake on John Wesley Harding; the additions of Norman Blake, Charlie Daniels, and Bob Wilson, among others, are beyond clutch. Their collaborative efforts create a soundscape as great as any other classic country record from this time period.

On Bob’s end, his stellar vocal delivery is the glue that holds this beautiful sound together. And although his lyricism is even more straightforward than the last album, it doesn’t suffer in the least. β€œLay Lady Lay” deserves all the praise it gets as a gorgeous plea of seduction and longing. β€œTonight I’ll Be Staying Here with You”, which I’ve always viewed as the sister song to β€œI’ll Be Your Baby Tonight”, is an equally wonderful, candid piece of songwriting. Conversely, β€œI Threw It All Away” and β€œTell Me That It Isn’t True” are two of the finest heartbreaking ballads he’d written up to this point, with β€œOne More Night” playing the perfect role of breezy forlorn number.

There’s very little not to like on Nashville Skyline, especially if you’re a β€œCountry Pie” defender like I am. I admittedly have never loved the β€œGirl from the North Country” duet with Johnny Cash. It’s a fantastic song, but not only is it not as good as the original, it’s always felt a tad forced and unnatural to me, almost like an attempt to push th

Just listened to β€œNashville Skyline” for the first time

Wow. I am a fairly new fan of Bob Dylan (started listening to him maybe 6 months ago), and I have really only listened in depth to his first albums up to and including Blonde on Blonde (plus I’ve also had Blood on the tracks on repeat for weeks). Compared to these albums, Nashville Skyline felt completely different. Dylan’s voice was so smooth and had such a nice tone compared to his other albums, he weirdly even sounded like Elvis on some of his lines. I found this album overall very accessible and fun, it probably helps that’s it’s only around 26 minutes long. Standout tracks I especially enjoyed were Nashville Skyline Rag, Lay Lady Lay, and Country Pie.

What do the more long-time Dylan fans think of this album generally?

Short albums kinda like Nashville Skyline Bob Dylan/ Pink Moon by Nick drake

Will take some songs I just kinda prefer albums, dope hearing a song you really like then having an entire album that sounds just like it to follow up. Preferably under 40 minutes. If it sounds anything like Girl From The North Country, you'll be my favourite human ever. Thank you :)

I just listened to Nashville Skyline, wow

I already knew Girl From The North Country and Lay Lady Lay of course, but i just listened to the rest of the album a couple of days ago, and i’m amazed as to how great this album is. It’s such a masterpiece. All the songs are great on their own, beautiful all together. I especially like peggy day, but also love all the other songs. It’s a masterpiece and my new favorite album of his.
