Movies similar to Nadine Labaki's "Caramel"

Salam y'all,

I wanted to know if there are any movies similar to Nadine Labaki's Caramel. I like the sisterhood trope or something like that and I wanted to see if there was something similar from Egypt since I heard there are many.

Is Nadine Labaki's 'Capernaum' an uncredited remake of Mira Nair's 'Salaam Bombay'?

Disclaimer: 'Capernaum' and 'Salaam Bombay' spoilers below!

I have watched 'Capernaum' shortly after it became nominated for the Best Foreign Movie Award by the Academy, because the Oscar shortlist for this category very often features amazing internationally recognized movies. I really liked 'Capernaum' back then - I have cried a lot on it, I thought it was a bit sugary and too upfront about its message, but I loved the plot and certain scenes that were featured in this movie. I thought it was a really great picture, focusing on children's poverty and unhappiness in a world that refused to provide for them - back then, with my movie experience, 'Capernaum' really stood out with its concept and plot, especially with its leading child actor, Zain Al Rafeea, whose acting was stellar, chiefly considering his age.

That is , until I watched 'Salaam Bombay', a much older movie, a few days ago. Mira Nair's picture was an even more beautiful work - emotional, subtle and at the same time memorable and heartbreaking. It featured interesting stories and it also was heavily grounded on children having no future in this world of streets. Not only I loved 'Salaam Bombay' much more, because its message was much subtler and not straight out told, like in 'Capernaum', I also discovered that 'Capernaum' borrowed a lot of similarities from this movie, and these happened to be the plot points I remembered about 'Capernaum' and liked it for.

Not only Krishna and Zain are similar to each other visually, and found themselves in similar familial and economic situations, there are also certain plot points that, originally appearing in 'Salaam Bombay', resurfaced in 'Capernaum'. To name a few (warning: spoilers ahead!):

  • both movies take place on streets where children have to survive on their own, having their rights abused in the process

  • both protagonists land in a prison/juvenile detention center and they both are to face the trials

  • in both movies young children are taken away from their mothers (respectively, a prostitute/an illegal immigrant) who had to neglect their children due to their work and they suffered great emotional distress upon their children's disappearance

  • the protagonists are both finding a maternal figure in said mothers, and taking care of their children

  • in both movies a young girl is sexually preyed upon and eventually sold into being raped by considerably older men (Sweet Sixteen/Zain's sister)

  • in both movies the protagonist stabs s
