I noticed she isn’t in any of the photos. Does anyone know why? Was she there? John Luke was officiating so it seems odd that she wouldn’t be there!
Mary’s father is never seen nor mentioned in the film. Or is he? Did Mrs. Hatch have a love affair or was perhaps coerced into the bed of the richest and most powerful man in town? When we meet Mary as young woman, she lives in a rather nice country house with her mother, who for all we know doesn’t work. Where is the money coming from to pay the mortgage, have two phone lines, and buy the hottest new singles like Buffalo Gals on record? Mr. Potter was a heartless, cruel man, who wanted nothing to do with a family. However, he did care about his legacy, and knowing about Mary, he made sure she wanted for nothing.
When Mary married Potter’s rival George Bailey, Potter seethed. But rather than continue trying to ruin George, Potter tried time and again to help him. When there was a run on the bank, Potter called the Building & Loan to see if George was alright, if he needed police protection, and offer George’s customers a 50¢ on the dollar buyout on their B&L holdings. Did he do this to ruin George? Hardly! He was trying to prevent a riot, get those panicked people away from his new son-in-law, for Mary’s sake. Later, knowing what a grind and struggle running the B&L was, Potter offered George a cushy job with a high salary, travel perks, the works. It was only George’s misguided pride and morality that made him turn the old man down.
Finally, at the end of his rope and possibly half crazed, half senile, Potter pocketed the 8-grand Uncle Billy misplaced and put out a warrant for George’s arrest. Mind you, he wouldn’t have followed through on it. The money would have conveniently reappeared somewhere at the bank after Christmas. George would finally be ready to say the hell with the B&L and take that job at Potter’s.
The question is, how much did Mary know? Likely, her mother told her that her father had died when she was a baby. But perhaps she knew more. Perhaps she married George to stick it to her absentee father, knowing it would infuriate him. That much is up for debate...
110-hr PPL here. I recently received a checkout flight from one of my former instructors out of KSNA where the TPA is 850 AGL. Upon being told to extend our downwind, the instructor suggested we climb a bit for safety in case of engine loss. And if ATC said to descend to TPA, hit em with the ever reliable “unable”. I always knew you could disobey regulations in the name of safety, but I had no idea that ascending above TPA on extended up/downwind legs was included. I really like this because being so low and so out of gliding range to the airport made me nervous.
So, that got me wondering: what are some lesser known things you can “just do” for safety like this?
In the scene where they throw rocks at the old house to break a window and make a wish, George Bailey wishes for a life of travel, adventure, etc. Mary then makes a wish (we later find out) George will stay in Bedford Falls and marry her.
Seconds later, what happens? George finds out his father got a stroke, which leads to a chain of events causing Mary's wish to play out.
Mary killed George's father.

Are there any Aviator owners in here? If so how do you feel about the car? I think Lincoln got so many things right with it including exterior and interior design, certain features like 30 way adjustable and massaging seats, 400hp standard, etc. but it's the shortcomings that eats away at you as an owner.
