Was just asked to sign a release by a major studio, is this just for them to read my film/tv pilot? Does anyone have any experience with this?

Out of the blue a major studio contacted me and asked me to sign a release. The release is signed by the head of programming from the studio. I am very excited but I don't know if I should be or if it is standard practice for them to read it.

My script is a TV Pilot and I was contacted by the film department which is a little strange, maybe they think it is a movie. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Brett Ratner is a punchline that people reference when they are making a joke about bad or franchise-destroying movies. But, why did he have so many major film studios giving him expensive and constant work for two decades?

Surely, there were cheaper or better directors available?

The only original property he worked on that was successful was Rush Hour in 1998. It took 6 sexual assault charges in 2017 for him to finally stop getting work.

If he had a reputation for making bad movies and destroying franchises, then why were studios bidding on him?

His most profitable movies were sequels to existing franchises that would likely have made money with or without him.

The "Ratner" brand wasn't going to draw people to the theater in the way that "Spielberg" movies do. There isn't a distinctive "Ratner style" to his cinematography.

Why?

When do major film studios inquire about turning my book into a movie?

So I'm almost finished with my first draft of my 6 volume epic fantasy series, but I'm surprised that despite the many writing subreddits I have used to talk about my WIP, no movie studios have yet contacted me about making my novel into a film. Has anyone else had this problem?

My book is extremely inclusive, featuring a cast of characters from every skin pigment that exists and they are all LGBTQXYZ+. I think it's extremely well-suited for the big screen, and I even have a musician friend who I have asked to toy around with making some cool epic cinematic theme music (he's on soundcloud btw). Anyway, if I don't hear from anyone at Warner, Miramax, or Fox, I'd at least settle for an 8-part Netflix series. But c'mon, where are the studios at??? I guess corona is to blame.

Dead Man's Chest (2006) deserves to be recognised as THE gold-standard for visual effects in film. More than a decade later; and it still champions the majority of movies releasing. A prime example of how a studio swung big and made bold choices without compromising the craft of the art.

Davy Jones alone is an achievement in technical cinema. His character design is flawless. I have yet to see the likes of him represented in the same way - and while a couple films come close, ILM's VFX in Dead Man’s Chest have proven to be timeless. There is not one point in the film where my suspension of disbelief was compromised.

I was dead-convinced Davy Jones was real - like genuinely real-real. I could have sworn it was some sort of combination between animatronics/makeup and masks, but the fact that his character is 100% completely computer generated speaks volumes to the incredible craftsmanship of the animators and artists who worked on this film. Bill Nighy's performance is amazing, too. Truly groundbreaking in all his tentacle porn glory.

I think there's also something to be said about the cinematography. This film is extremely well-shot. Gore Verbinski's camerawork is off-the-charts incredible. I really appreciate the colour grading and distinct use of film grain in some of his shots; it gives off this super grounded/gritty lived-in feel, and adds so much to the movie in terms of world-building.

Edit: I'd like to dedicate this post to all the technical directors, supervisors, animators, artists, operators, compositors and editors who worked on this film. Your work is truly stunning and made for one of the most visually-striking films of all time. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
