I feel like they have a certain quality that is similar to Gizz especially with Little Dark Age (which is an awesome album by the way)
This is my first job out of bootcamp as a web developer, been working here for about 7 months.
It's a very small company and it seems like a good deal of management's time is spent watching their surveillance software. They're a bit obsessed with productivity to the point that employees aren't allowed to use their phone at their desk (except for music/podcasts...)
The CEO will make broad statements to everyone in Slack about everything from what kind of podcasts are appropriate for work (not the entertaining kind, we're here to work, not be entertained!) to the number of tabs you have open (if you're done with the site just close the tab, it's a resource hog and security risk!) to how long you spend typing out a message on slack.
I literally spent less than ten minutes mistakenly logging the wrong task and heard about it from my manager!
I can't do my best work under this kind of scrutiny. It's causing me so much stress I'm getting headaches and eye twitches. I'm rushing through my work trying to meet their deadlines which causes lower quality work and I've been giving 110% for so long that I'm getting RSI's and having to wear a brace and take Naproxen all the time because my forearms ache from constantly typing/clicking.
What's worse is the CEO seems to like firing people at the drop of a hat, so I'm constantly worried about my job. I'm looking almost every day and applying to everything I think I'm qualified for but getting very few replies.
I study every night after work but my portfolio is still kind of weak. I'm consistently brushing up on basics but feeling a little aimless.
I'm concerned for my health and my future and I don't know what to do.
I asked the manager why and they said that itβs necessary so as to not burn out the coils. Maintenance guy told me the same. It seems pretty ridiculous as we live in a βluxuryβ 2 bed 3 bath apartment in a fairly new (10 year old) building. Is there any action we can take as far as requesting money back on the rent? Any help is much appreciated thanks!!
Edit: Weβre in Los Angeles (West side)
Iβm set to matriculate next August at a school in NYC and am kind of worried about the current crime situation of NYC. Few more officers were shot this weekend. Columbia grad student killed back in December. Subway attack on Deloitte worker.
Iβm targeting the upper west side to live, is it a nice place? Or just nice comparatively. Iβm just wondering if I need to be worried about catching a subway home late at night from bars etc. the transportation system was a huge pull for a New York school.
But the rest of the things that come along with New York have been weighing on me so Iβd like to hear from grad students based in Manhattan how safe do you feel?
Mostly this is for my partner who is moving with me, I want her to feel safe.
Hey everyone,
So I've been managing a coffee shop for the past year (been in the industry 10 years) and I have an issue with my owner when it comes to our espresso. They are stuck in the mindset that there is one specific recipe for our espresso shots. X grams of grounds in, and X grams of espresso out. It's about a 1:1.5 ratio. They do not consider time to be a part of the extraction process either. The only timing metric used is if the espresso starts dripping from the portifilter at X seconds (which I've never seen used as a extraction metric in my life). This is enforced every single day and has not changed since the shop has opened. I've explained to them that this is simply not how espresso works and it needs to be adjusted multiple times a day and that there is no set "recipe". I love my job and have no intention of leaving but it is starting to wear on the baristas, especially those who have years of experience. Many of them, myself included, feel we are not trusted to actually do the job of a barista and much of our prior training is going to waste.
My question for you all is have you seen this practice before in the coffee industry? Besides Starbucks of course. Also, do you have any advice on how I can possibly convince them of proper espresso extraction?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
EDIT: These responses have been amazing and Iβm extremely appreciative for everyoneβs input. This has been incredibly insightful!
So, our house was pretty close to the Marshall fire. Luckily we had a place to come back to, but there was lots of ash and soot inside by our windows, which happen to be by our vents. We've asked them to get some professional cleaning for HVAC on Monday, and they agreed. Yesterday, I called in and they were extremely rude and told me we're responsible for that. Looking at our lease, and talking to boulder co., it seems they are the ones responsible. Looking for suggestions and help on how to proceed, as I'm pretty broke and don't have money to do it ourselves nor hire attorneys. I also have asthma so it seems important we get these cleaned.
I want to find a good book to read, maybe you have some recommendations for books with topics that mgmt talks about or just books that you think that other fans would like. Thanks!
I live in the Seattle area and for the past 3 mths have noticed that every TB in the area that I've visited or order from on Uber Eats is shorting hot sauce. They now won't give any unless specifically asked, and even when asked won't exceed 2 per item.
Is anyone else experiencing this in any other markets? Trying to figure out if my region just has a frugal douche for mgmt or if maybe this is simply a supply line issue.
And I'm not asking for the moon, I usually use 4-5 packets per item, it's not like I'm asking them for 30+ packets per order.
EDIT: Appreciate all the feedback, I actually went in tonight and asked. They told me they "only had one box" and it was due to supply shortages. Here's to hoping it resolves soon; TB w/out sauce ain't TB.

Title says it all. RFC will clamp anyone anywhere and ignore appeals. I was clamped at 1.56AM in my building car park despite having a car park permit. I cannot appeal the clamp until I pay the release and await the clamper to remove the clamp. I feel bad for anyone working for this company as it must be depressing.
Sorry but I needed to vent somewhere. In the midst of lockdowns and new drinking price increases, this is a real kick in the nuts to end the week. That is all, thanks for reading. Have a good day everyone!
Originally written in response to https://www.reddit.com/r/uwaterloo/comments/rvchsh/proscons_of_management_engineering/ but sheesh i need to just write it once and have higher coverage so I dont get the same 3 fucking questions about if someone from management engineering (commonly mgmt/mgte/mgme/msci) can faang it or not.
Good stuff:
β the profs in mgmt know what they are doing (strong knowledge of subject matters in research and field). trust me I have prof in chem who didn't know ideal gas law and somehow was doctor in chem eng (no amount of niceness can not save an unstable fundamental in course knowledge)
β the profs will have office hours, are professional and reasonable (strong skills both in teaching and demonstration). They have excellent communication skills and are very accomodating of circumstances. trust me I have profs in mech who just keep yelling at people and scream at class for bad test marks the entire term, nobody went to their class because they are passive aggressive.
β the profs legitimately care a lot, they actively ask for feedback during the term and care a lot about it. The department chair/associate chair actively talk to students and works to implement feedback. the mgmt department care so much they literally have a system on it
β you get a taste of everything in mgmt - mechanical courses, you can take a couple ece courses, mostly mgmt and stats courses though, this is pretty good compared to chem/nano but they're pretty niche
β Ken mckay set up a mentoring system for mgmt, and upper year students actively help lower year ones. Also, IISE (institute industrial system engineers which is comprised of many mgmt students) sets up events and services like resume critiques and chats. very helpful!
Negative stuff:
π©you dont learn enough of low level content so if you want to do anything with concurrency and low level os u get cucked
π©most if not all ur electives are basically stats and stat variations (stat x stat = stochastic, stat x computing = datasci, stats x optimization 1 = optimization 2 etc etc) so ur somewhat stuck doing stats no matter where u go
π©unfortunately some mgmt courses aren't up "to par" as other courses. For example: dsa, cs240 is antireq for mte140 and mte140 is antireq for msci240 but msci240 is not antireq for mte140 so there is likely some knowledge missing such that it is not considered an e
... keep reading on reddit β‘I have found it to be painfully difficult to deliver dashboards for business users. Typical projects begin with them providing a list of requirements but since they have a lack of literacy with BI tools they often don't know what it is they want or understand PBI enough to know how much work what they are asking for is. Then once a dashboard is delivered that meets the requirements they submitted, there begins a really tedious process in which they keep wanting to add features to the dashboard, constantly changing the scope of the project. They also seem to get really hung up and want to customize nearly every single aspect of the dashboard and when it's something that isn't natively part of PBI and requires some workarounds with bookmarks or custom visuals they get frustrated. Every time you implement changes, there is something new they want to add. It seems like every project just gets stuck in this endless cycle where the scope is constantly changing, and the need to accommodate for any edge case the business user can think of leads to a level of complexity that turns the dashboard into a clunky and unintuitive mess.
PowerBI is a very flexible tool and almost anything is possible, but that flexibility seems to make it so difficult to deliver a finished and agreed upon project. I know that in general, that making a dashboard isn't an easy thing to do and there's no magic bullet, but I was hoping to learn how other people handle the complexity and are able to get something across the finish line.

βEuropean banks were one of the top performing sectors in Europe last year and posted their best returns since 2009,β says Raj Lala, President and CEO at Evolve ETFs. βThe sector is currently trading at steep discounts relative to pre-COVID levels and other regions like the US. Improving economic growth, higher earnings expectations, and lifted dividend restrictions have continued to attract assets to the sector in early 2022. Given current valuations, European banks may offer investors diversification benefits and potentially more upside than North American counterparts.β
Targeted yield: 7%
Management fee: 0.60% (plus applicable sales taxes)
I'm very bullish and plan on holding this for many years, but do you think the 0.70% mgmt fee is too high? Thanks in advance.
I just filled the script, it's 100mg twice a day. But he said I could just "take it once a day or whenever". He was very casual about it but reading this sub seems that this shouldn't be a casual med.
I've never used it before, but will that dose help? I see people on here saying they take thousands of mg's a day.
I get steroid injections for my neck pain twice a year and after my most recent injection the Dr prescribed gaba.
I'm 160lb female btw for size/gender vs dosage comparison.
My ER-X is configured as a switch. In the wizard, I selected "non-standard VLAN" and I set the mgmt to VLAN 10.
My router (pfsense) is connected to eth0. eth0 is set PVID (blank) VID (10,20,30...)
I have a computer connected to eth1 PVID=20
I have the firewall set to allow traffic from VLAN20 to VLAN10. I am able to access other devices on VLAN10 from VLAN20. I an unable to access the ER-X switch.
From a computer on VLAN10, I can ping and access the switch with no issue.
From a compute on VLAN20, I can't even ping.
I see no firewall blocks. Is the ER-X itself blocking?
Another question. I'm still running the v1 series of firmware. Back when I was using my ER-X as my main router I had read that it is better to stay with v1. Now that I'm using it as a switch, I'm wondering if it is worth trying v2.
FEATURE: Allow setting temp folder per torrent/catergory (glassez)
This is genuinely the one seemingly small improvement I have been waiting YEARS for. I was honestly very close to using a different client because of how annoying this was getting to manage.
Doing a dance of joy atm.
So, am I the only one that thinks the self titles album is about a DMT trip or Ayahuasca ?

Thereβs no purpose to this post beyond venting. No sysadmin job reqs have been posted yet. Iβll try to keep the backups running, patches deployed, users on/off boarded, printers printing, tickets worked, oh god I shouldnβt be thinking about everything thatβs needed. I donβt mind letting projects slip, but I havenβt heard what management expects or plans.
