#BRING YOUR MOUTH GUARDS
There was a big focus on contested ball and tackling drills at training this morning, as the players worked in groups in confined spaces.
Classy draftee Neil Erasmus was learning from the best as he went one-on-one with tough nut Andrew Brayshaw, with both players wearing mouth guards. Erasmus also received some advice on tackling technique from assistant coach Matthew Boyd.
The Dockers made strong gains in the contested ball, clearance and ground ball areas last season and will hope to become a dominant force around the contest in 2022 on the back of the emergence of ruckman Sean Darcy as a star.
While inside beast Nat Fyfe, who often runs separately to the main training session as he recovers from a shoulder injury and infection, was missing, the clubβs oldest two players in David Mundy and Michael Walters trained fully.
#ON THE OUTER
There was a largish rehab group after ahead of the playersβ three-week Christmas break beginning on Saturday, but importantly no player has been ruled out of round one.
Matt Taberner, Griffin Logue, James Aish, Lachie Schultz, Josh Treacy and Brandon Walker trained separately, while Sam Sturt is also being looked after.
Taberner is projected to re-join main training at the end of January following post-season ankle surgery, while injury-cursed youngster Sturt is set begin training fully after the Christmas break and have a sold lead-in to the season.
Big man Rory Lobb trained and didnβt look bothered by a back spasm suffered on Monday, bouncing up after being heavily tackled to the ground by youngster Nathan OβDriscoll in one drill.
#CHRISTMAS GRINCH
βTis the season to be jolly but coach Justin Longmuir wasnβt in a mood to be handing out too many round one starting berths as presents.
There were a couple of gentle reminders for players that they had better knuckle down as Longmuir gave his final interview for 2021.
He said yet-to-debut onballer Luke Valente, who has been on the list for three seasons, had βa bit of work to doβ to force his way into the midfield and also acknowledged veteran rebounder Nathan Wilson could come under pressure for his spot given the addition of Jordan Clark.
That is all. Whatever they are paying him they should double it.
We couldnβt help ask Wilson about his work with Wes Anderson and βThe Royal Tenenbaums.β Wilson and his brother Owen were college friends with Anderson, and all of them launched their careers in 1997 with the hilariously deadpan βBottle Rocketβ (the third Wilson brother Andrew appeared in it too). Luke would go on to a small appearance in βRushmoreβ and then the ostensible lead child in βThe Royal Tenenbaums,β which turns 20 this year and is also being feted at Tribeca soon in a 20th-anniversary celebration conversation with the cast.
**β**I canβt believe itβs been 20 years!β Wilson said. We asked Wilson why Owen and Anderson havenβt made a movie together since βTenenbaums,β and the actor said he initially thought they would make a new movie together every two years, but theyβve all been busy with separate projects, and time has flown by.
βI mean, yeah, we keep in touch and are always kind of talking about doing something, and itβs just a matter of putting the band back together. But, yeah, when I hear itβs been 20 years β itβs like, heβs been so busy, Iβve been so busy, Owenβs been busy. In my mind, when we started out, it was like, OK, weβre going to do one of these every two years!β
But thereβs still one Wes/Owen/Luke project from back in the day that they still hope to make one day, a Western, which all of them mentioned in the press around the time of βBottle Rocket.β Anderson confirmed the existence of such a project a few years back in a Playlist interview, and Wilson hasnβt forgotten it either. βWeβve talked over the years about the possibility of maybe doing a western with the old group. So, that would be really incredible. And Iβd be just like anybody else β just to see Wesβ take on a Western would be incredible.β
Hey everyone! Huge fan of Wes and have watched every film so many times. Currently in the process of showing my girlfriend his films and she is loving it! My thought while watching The Royal Tennenbaums today was, why doesnβt Luke Wilson work with Wes anymore? The first three films of Andersonβs career involved Luke and I honestly love him as an actor. I know Owen co wrote the first three and that probably had a bit to do with it but Iβm wondering why Luke hasnβt been in any of Andersonβs recent films. Itβs most likely just career direction and such but wondering if anyone has other reasons for this ? Thanks !
Some talk of our favorite movie during the first part of the interview, as well as Wilson's other movies and life.
