I realize that this was the lesson in Sunday School, but still. DW usually asks me to attend the church the Sunday before Christmas, but this year it was crickets, and now I see why. She is either embarrassed or knows that I would probably storm out in disgust.

I am sure the folks in SLC were thinking "What message would appeal to the folks who only attend church around Christmas and Easter?" And then it came to them "Why don't we start a discussion that will lead to gay bashing? What says Merry Christmas better?"

Is this what it was supposed to be? If so they might want to check what their bible says.

I was raised Christian and after 20 years of life, I grew up and stopped believing in it. It's been a year and now I'm just disgusted by Christianity. As a Christian I always wondered why there were so many hypocritical Christians, and now I know it's because the book the religion is centered on is hypocritical. My family is Christian and it's so hard when they're less like Jesus and more like the Westboro Baptist Church (although not quite THAT bad.) I hate Christianity. The few positive outcomes the religion achieves can be done without it, and it leads to so much hatred and bigotry.

Seeing all the "Islamophobia is okay" posts today and it's ludicrously obvious that some of you have lost all perspective on what is posing a threat to the vast majority of the people on this subreddit.

This week, Republicans in Florida passed a piece of legislation that effectively makes it illegal for teachers to acknowledge the existence of LGBT people. Due to the far-right, reactionary nature of the Trump administration, LGBTQ acceptance is now lower than it has been in years.

All across the American South, state governments are trying to make life as hard as possible for LGBT people, women, and other underserved groups, and their primary motivator for doing so is their radical belief that they are executing the will of the Christian God.

I am not and will never make excuses for the actions of violent theocracies. You should despise violent bigotry in all its forms. However, y'all need to hold onto your perspective and recognize where the real threat is coming from here in the US, and it is not (and never will be) Islam or Muslims.

Everyone basically agrees that nazism is evil - as they should! - because it caused a genocide and the death and torture of thousands/millions of people, and anyone aligning themselves with the nazi ideology will probably get a well-deserved punch in the face.

Yet we KNOW the bible inspired countless more genocides than the mein kampf, and still inspires death, torture and mistreatment today. And it’s obvious that it’s not coincidental - any ideology centred on a belief that your group is “god’s favorites” or some variant of that and that your mission should be to convert others, will, historically, have the same results.

Yet it’s perfectly acceptable to publicly label yourself as a christian and everyone should be “respectful” of that because it’s “their beliefs”

I feel like I’m going nuts with this big elephant in the room that no one seems to see. Public figures get “canceled” for saying something disrespectful ten years ago but we can’t “cancel” christianity for centuries of genocide, colonialism, violence and mistreatment whose effects are still felt today? Even my most leftist friends with values closely aligned to mine will defend/respect christianity despite not being christian themselves. What the fuck? What am I missing?

Let’s consider the generic “cancer removal surgery” hypothetical for my thesis. A man is about to be operated on and he has been prayed for. Is this prayer effective? The structure of the question demands either Yes or No as the answer. So let’s explore both.

If the answer is Yes or at the very least “possibly,” this is a substantial blow against the morality of god. If he does indeed enhance the skill of the doctors, the durability of the patient, or some other factor when the surgery is prayed over, that means he does NOT do that for surgeries that aren’t prayed over or at the very least is less likely to do so. This means that god withholds potentially necessary enhancements from the non-blessed surgeries, meaning the end results are more likely to be negative. Deciding life or death over the presence of prayer or lack thereof is morally troubling. A loved one dying because they were not prayed for is very hard to reconcile with the statement that god is love.

If the answer is No, that makes prayer a worthless, futile exercise. If god will do what he wants in the way he wants it to happen regardless of prayer, then there’s no point in praying. Since prayer is demanded of Christians, this calls into question the logical integrity of the religion.

Either way, a substantial blow is dealt against Christianity. Either god is malevolent or a primary activity for the religion is utterly pointless.

I know that this sentiment has probably been widely shared on here before, but I still cannot get over the fact that there are so many Christians whom make being a good Christian their only meaningful personality trait.

They say things like that they are completely devoted to being that way for their entire lives, their favorite book is the Bible, their favorite music is Christian music, their favorite hobby is going to church, their favorite historical figure/person is Jesus and that they’re obsessed with him 24/7, their favorite movies/shows are Christian ones, etc.

Even when I was a Christian, I still found this whole outlook pretty depressing. Even then, I knew that it was important to have a diverse range of interests. These people sound like literal robots.

I know that this is a feature of Christianity, taking away individuality; hell, even other Christians who don’t make Christianity their only defining character trait still have it take up a large chunk, if not most of their self-identity.

It’s tragic.

So. Turns out the whole evangelical thing was just an act, a way to gain power and money. Can't say I feel sorry for him. How many lives did he ruin?
