A list of puns related to "List of accolades received by Hayao Miyazaki"
I finally managed to get the time to watch Hayao Miyazaki's first film.
"Nausicaรค" was quite an adventure and I enjoyed every bit of it. Even in 1984, Japanese art and animation styles were amazing. The scenes in the Sea of Decay and watching the insects had me captivated.
One thing I felt was great about this movie, was Princess Nausicaรค herself. In my opinion, she should be a benchmark in how to write a strong female lead character. Too many movies seem to portray woman leads as either assholes or someone who needs the safety of a man.
Nausicaรค is neither one. She cares for her people, and becomes vulnerable when she loses her father or talks with animals and bugs. But she is also self-sufficient, skilled, determined and can clearly take care of herself. She gets shot and burned in the acid lake which almost incapacitates her, and she dies at the end, and has to be resurrected by the Ohm insects.
She isn't some superhero, but human, and its not her abilities that make her great, but her actions. I believe that is how you write a strong female lead character.
Anyways thanks for reading. Not sure which Ghibli film J want to watch next, but I'm leaning to either "Porco Rosso" or "Whisper of the Heart"
This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 52%. (I'm a bot)

I have never really been a big fan of animated movies in general. I'm a military history buff so I used to prefer movies such as "Gettysburg", "Waterloo", "Zulu" and so on.
Unfortunately, this causes me to write off some great films, just cause they don't fall into my preferred subject matter.
However I've been trying to branch off, and I am glad for it.
"Princess Mononoke" is the third Studio Ghibli film I have watched, the first being "Grave of the Fireflies", and the second being "From Up on Poppy Hill". And like the others, "Princess Mononoke" blew me away. The art and music in this film are just absolutely beautiful, and the story has a feeling of an epic tale or fable.
One huge thing I like about about this film, are how there are no clear cut heroes and villains.
On one side, San is fighting to protect her home and family from the expanding humans, but she is clearly bloodlusted and overcome with rage. On the other side, Lady Eboshi is righteous, and fair, treating men and women equally, and loves all of her people, but is relentlessly expanding, and is destroying the environment around her. Caught between the forces of the Emperor and warring Daimyo, Eboshi and San struggle to find their place in their land.
This is also something slightly more personal to me, as I was growing up, my dad would take me out hunting and camping in the BC interior, and I could almost see the Cascadia forests and mountain ranges in this movie.
"Princess Mononoke" is one of the greatest films I have watched, and I will definitely look for more Studio Ghibli Films.
I already know my next one will be "Spirited Away".
