A list of puns related to "List of Doctor Who episodes (2005βpresent)"
So of the main companions we have seen travel in the TARDIS since Doctor Who came back in 2005 almost all of them are from (at the time) present day Earth. In my opinion the companions on Doctor Who need a radical change and should look to time periods from the past or future, or even other planets, for the next team of companion(s).
What do you think though? Should they change things up on Doctor Who with the next group of companions or are you fine with more present day Earth humans traveling with the Doctor?
So a conversation in another thread lead to some discussion about how often Doctor Who sets episodes on Earth versus elsewhere, which led me down a bit of a rabbit hole here, as you can see. I thought I'd share it with y'all, though I doubt there's much here that many of you will find surprising. There are, however, some interesting trends.
I primarily used the TARDIS Wiki's series and episode pages to gather this information, mostly confined to the settings and writers of each episode. For episodes with multiple settings, I gave more precedence to the fantastical: extraterrestrial > historical > contemporary. I defined contemporary settings as those set within 10 years, before or after, the air date.
Also note: I did not consider mini-episodes; I consider each episode in a two-parter individually; I consider each special one episode; it's possible that some of the data on the Wiki was incomplete or incorrect, it is also possible I made mistakes.
So, without further preamble....
Settings by Series
An Unearthly Child - first episode The Daleks - first Dalek episode critical Dalek background The Keys of Marinus - My Favorite 1st doctor episode The Dalek Invasion of Earth - so many important things in this one The Romans - I think this is eluded to in the modern series (maybe I should drop this one) The Tenth Planet - The first Cyberman and first regeneration
The Ice Warriors - The first Ice Warrior episode TheTomb of the Cyberman - A little Cyberman back story and a classic The Wheel in Space - Zoe! The Invasion - Cybermen invade earth The War Games - Time lords! (Side note: not canon but I consider this the first Master episode)
Spearhead from Space - color and autons Doctor Who and the Silurians - Silurians introduced Terror of the Autons - first official Master episode The Claws of Axos - my favorite 3rd doctor episode Frontier in Space - good episode discussing human expansion into space The Time Warrior - Sarah Jane Smith! Also Sontaran introduction Planet of the Spiders - The crystal from Metebelis 3
The Ark in Space The Sontaran Experiment The Genesis of The Daleks - Origin of the Daleks Revenge of the Cybermen Terror of the Zygons - eluded to in modern The Hand of Fear - bye Sarah The Deadly Assassin - so much time lord information The Face of Evil - Lela plus very good The Robots of Death - too good not to included (bit garish for my taste) The invisible Enemy - K-9! Underworld - background on Time Lord non-interference The Invasion of Time - Galifrey! The Ribos Operation - Ramona! Also the guardians The Pirate Planet - Douglas Adams goodness The Armageddon Factor - Completion of the key to time Destiny of the Daleks - Romona regeneration also great Davros City of Death - more Douglas Adams goodness
Terminus - good 4th Doctor episode The Kings Demons - Kamelion stuff
The Twin Dilema - some regenerations go bad The Trial of the Time Lords
Survival
(Self reflective thoughts: maybe too much Tom Baker and not enough of 5 - 7; also maybe this list should be drastically smaller and is too daunting for those going on this journey)
#List of Doctor Who Mini-Episodes
(My take on the deleted thread)
Most of these contain spoilers for the previous and next episode!
For context see the episode list.
"Where did the mini episodes come from?"
DVD extra, YouTube promos, Comic Relief, Children in Need, The Proms, prequel teasers, etc.
"Are the mini episodes essential to watch?"
In generaral? No. While some are really good, the majority are inessential to the plot. They can be watched after the fact if keeping track of miniepsidoes slows you down.
Unfortunateley, not all of these mini-episodes have been officially released on YouTube and are liable to be removed in the future. (You know I'm desperate when the best quality link I can find is with French subtitles on DailyMotion). So if a link is dead (or you have found a better upload) don't be afraid to PM me!

I know the Big Four have had a monopoly on the top two ranking spots since 2005, but that precious #3 position has been pierced by a number of non-Big-Four players. But I've never seen a full list so I'm not sure how many players have actually reached it over the last 13 years, or how much time they spent there in total. Does anyone know of a full list? I'd be interested in seeing it.
2002-2006
The Stats: 90 games played, 24-47-12 record with PIT. 4 shutouts, .892 SV%
The Mask: Not bad I guess
The Good: One of the craziest saves youβll ever see against Philly during Sidβs rookie year
The Bad: Will always be equated with some very dark and awful Pens teams.
The Exit: Pens bought out his contract with the emergence of Fleury and after signing Jocelyn Thibault. Appeared in 5 NHL games after that with Anaheim, Chicago, and Tampa Bay before going to Europe.
Nowadays: No idea. Appears to be back in Canada but his Twitter is pretty barebones
2005-2007
The Stats: 38 games played, 8-17-5 record with PIT. 1 shutout, .894 SV%
The Mask: Nothing special
The Good: Even straight guys would have to admit: This is one good looking dude
The Bad: Even for a backup, he was pretty meh
The Exit: Signed with Buffalo in July 2007 during free agency.
Nowadays: Owner and GM of the Sherbrooke Phoenix of the QMJHL
2007-2008
The Stats: 33 games played, 18-8-5 record with PIT. 2 shutouts, .923 SV%
The Mask: Iβd say itβs one of the better ones of the last 15 years
The Good: WHEW weβre starting to get into some real beauties here. The journeyman was brought up to the NHL in December 2007 when Fleury went down with a high ankle sprain, leaving Conklin and Dany Sabourin in charge of the crease and putting the Pens season on life support. But, he won his first nine starts for Pittsburgh and helped the Pens turn their season around en route to an appearance in the Stanley Cup Final. Also started for Pittsburgh for the inaugural Winter Classic against Buffalo in 2008. He actually is still #1 in franchise SV% of all goalies with at least 30 games played.
The Bad: After losing to the Wings in the 2008 finals, him and Judas Marian Hossa went and signed with them that offseason
The Exit: See above.
Nowadays: Assistant and Goaltending Development Coach for his Alma Mater University of New Ha

Obviously I've heard of Doctor Who and the premise of him being basically a time...wizard?/warlock?/lord? of sorts and how he always regenerates and goes on adventures but I never got into the show thinking it's just too hard to jump into since it's got such a rich history and since I'm usually not a fan of SciFi.
Saying that, I don't really know much beyond David Tennant and Matt Smith from The Crown were both Doctors at some point. A friend told me to just watch one episode, Blink, and see what I thought. Long story short, it was amazing! Such clever writing and casting - it's been a long time since I've felt genuine suspense, terror, and intrigue as much as the weeping angels make me feel.
I don't really know much about the community or the lore but I hope to get some advice on what episode to watch next! I've heard to just start with when Matt Smith becomes the Doctor but wanted to check with the fans so I don't miss out on any other stellar episodes. Hopefully this isn't too much of a newbie post and I welcome any and all recommendations! Sorry for the long post.
Doctor Who is blessed/cursed with a very dedicated fandom which has managed to retrieve and restore some of the lost episodes, but do similar efforts exist for other shows?
I've listened to 25 different ones looking for it and can't find it. Am I making it up?
This was written by Steven Moffat and was from before The Eleventh Hour was broadcast, and the issue had some early previews of Series 5. The latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine, which looks at Series 12, is out now.

Yes, didn't Piers and I look handsome and dashing in those photographs last month? Thank you SO MUCH for commenting. Oh, no, hang on, absolutely nobody did. Sorry, Piers, I've got a funny feeling we were a tiny bit upstaged. So in answer to your many enquiries, no, Beth Willis is not going to be available as an action figure. She's only little, it would have to be life-size.
Right, then. Where are we? Well, for me, it's the early morning of the 15th of February - 7.25, as I type this - and you're all a little bit in the future, wondering why the ink on this page is still a bit wet. Yes, lordy, I'm insanely late again. In fact, as you glance at the very fine cartoon on this page, I invite you all to write in with your best guesses as to its relevance. The correct answer is NONE AT ALL, since Ben had to draw it in advance. Stare deep into it. Imagine a connection. See, that's what we had to do for entertainment before they invented television and pictures of Beth Willis.
Now then, the show. Here's a terrifying fact - one of a list of terrifying facts I sob under my breath at four every morning, so why should you be spared? Do you know exactly how many episodes of new Doctor Who I've seen completed now, in their full and proper glory. Well, since you ask... none. Yes, none! Oh, I've seen edits, I've seen FX shots, I've heard music, I've thrilled to monster noises - but they're still all in bits. In fact, I'm going to make a note right now that someone probably ought to put all the bits together. Otherwise the screen will just cut to Piers, Beth and me, flapping about in the office like bewildered otters (again). But don't worry, no, seriously, we're on the case - we'll have all those bits welded together before you know. We'll even check down the back of the settee for any we missed.
Terrifying Fact Number One, of course, is that the show is going out on air really soon now. I'm in denial about that. I don't accept it. When people start talking to me about it, I stick my fi
... keep reading on reddit β‘If you are a fan of Doctor Who, you might already know that thereβre 13 Doctors, 14 faces, and 15 incarnations. But after doing some deep research into Non-Canon/Unbound territory, I have concluded that there are over 50 different versions of the Doctor. I have decided to list all the different versions/alternate incarnations of the timelord whoβs impact in science fiction is undeniably influential.
First, letβs start with the Doctors that are canon. The ones that appear in the TV series.
1.The 1st Doctor (William Hartnel: 1963-1966)
2.The 2nd Doctor (Patrick Troughton: 1967-1969)
3.The 3rd Doctor (Jon Pertwee: 1970-1974)
4.The 4th Doctor (Tom Baker: 1974-1981)
5.The 5th Doctor (Peter Davison: 1981-1984)
6.The 6th Doctor (Colin Baker: 1984-1986)
7.The 7th Doctor (Sylvester McCoy: 1987-1989)
8.The 8th Doctor (Paul McGann: 1996, 2013)
9.The War Doctor (John Hurt: 2013)
10.The 9th Doctor (Christopher Eccleston: 2005)
11&12.The 10th Doctor (David Tennant: 2005-2010)
13.The 11th Doctor (Matt Smith: 2010-2013)
14.The 12th Doctor (Peter Capaldi: 2014-2017)
15.The 13th Doctor (Jodie Whittaker: 2018-????)
Next we have the incarnations in the 1999 comic relief special Curse of Fatal Death. In this story, the Doctor is in his alternate 9th incarnation and regenerates 4 times.
16.The 9th Doctor (Rowan Atkinson: 1999)
17.The 10th Doctor (Richard E. Grant: 1999)
18.The 11th Doctor (Jim Broadbent: 1999)
19.The 12th Doctor (Hugh Grant: 1999)
20.The 13th Doctor (Joanna Lumley: 1999)
21.Dr. Who (Peter Cushing: 1965, 1966)
In 1965, a feature-length Doctor Who film called βDr. Who and the Daleksβ was released staring Peter Culling as a human scientist named Dr.Who. Since heβs just a human and not a timelord he canβt be considered a true non canon incarnation of the Doctor, but he is officially licensed. A sequel to the film was released in 1966 called βDaleks β Invasion Earth: 2150 A.Dβ. The sequel underperformed at the box office, and the third film was canceled.
22.The Shalka Doctor
In 2003, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Doctor Who, an animated web-series called Scream of the Shalka was produced staring Richard E. Grant as the alternate 9th Doctor in the series. Grant also played the 10th Doctor in Curse of Fatal Death.
In the same year as the release of Scream of The Shalka, 2003, Big Finish celebrated the 40th anniversary by releasing a series of audio books called Doctor Who Unbound. Each of these stories told a stand-alone story
... keep reading on reddit β‘I was thinking, besides the obvious being good writing, there seem to be certain patterns to the most acclaimed episodes of doctor who. For instance:
No doctor/Only doctor:
When they change up the formula, and you have an episode where there's either just the doctor or no doctor, you get blink, turn left, and for just doctor heaven sent and, to some extent, midnight. Why do you think that is.
(Counterpoint, you also get love and monsters, which I personally did not like at all)
Dark doctor:
When we get hints at the doctors darker side, you get waters of mars, human nature/family of blood, with episodes that leave an impact.
Horror:
When doctor who dips into horror, it seems to thrive and make for the most memorable episodes. For example, Silence in the library/Forest of the Dead, Blink, The impossible Planet/Satan's pit
Hopeless doctor:
Episodes where the doctor is completely out of his/her depth, or where the doctor loses. It makes for very compelling television to see your hero fail, and provides a strong contrast to the doctor being the intelligent almost untouchable protagonist we're used to. For example, **Midnight, Extremis (**where the doctor even asks to be turned off at one point before making a breakthrough), **The Impossible Planet/Satan's pit (**literally fighting satan)
(Counterpoint, sleep no more, the doctor loses, but it's not the greatest)
Sad doctor:
Not sure whether this point really stands on it's own, but the most acclaimed episodes tend to also be the saddest ones, The Girl in the Fireplace, Vincent and the Doctor.
On the flip side, I felt the follow up to the doctor being blind, which is perhaps a superficial but definitely real thing that could hold the doctor back, wasn't very rewarding. Perhaps because they didn't do much with it.
Side point, I think this leads into something else I love so much about doctor who, it has endless potential, it can dip into multiple genres, themes, all sorts, but still remain the same show fundamentally.
Any examples or themes I left out? Or counterpoints? Thanks.
