A list of puns related to "Le Cercle Rouge"
I was about to cum when I saw the "Coming Soon" section on the site. It's like seeing a dead relative again
Ey fam, kinda rounding out my French crime and noir/neonoir collection, and trying to discover:
Are there any Region A or region-free blu ray releases of Le Cercle Rouge? (excepting the OOP Criterion which is like $100) Any thoughts on whether there may be a new Crit release in the works?
(also no 4K release, just looking for the straight Blu)
Failing a compatible blu ray: Do I want to shoot for an OOP Criterion DVD, or are there any particular Region 1 discs that are better than another?
So, I just watched this for the first time and there is one thing I am puzzled about.
At the end of the film, Corey (our protagonist) is walking into a trap; he doesnβt realize the man he is going to fence the stolen jewelry too is really the cop who has been chasing Vogel throughout the film.
Corey goes to the house and right as the deal is about to be struck, Vogel breaks through the window and points a gun at the inspector impersonating the fence. He then yells to Corey to grab the bag and run. After Corey runs the investigator asks Vogel why he didnβt tell Corey who he was, and Vogel says βhe wouldnβt have left otherwiseβ.
WTF?
Maybe I am missing something obvious here, but why would Corey knowing the fence is really a cop make him not want to leave? If anything, itβs the opposite. He just stole a shit ton of jewels and is about to get arrested. Why would Vogel think Corey wouldnβt have ran if he had known?
If anyone can clear this up that would be great. Itβs baffling.
I've very much enjoyed the Melville titles here and I'm looking for other films in the noir/crime/thriller genre on the Channel that are atmospherically similar and not in either English or French. I'd be particularly interested in Italian, Nordic, Japanese, or Korean titles. Thanks very much in advance!
EDIT: Just saw the new Japanese Noir collection. Also interested in any recs within that!
I've watched Le Cercle Rouge recently and I took a look around online to see if there's a criterion edition of it. I found out there is - selling everywhere at near 150$ or more. Was it discontinued or something like that? Any chance they do a reprint or re-edition of any sort?

The increase in detail is pretty impressive. Unfortunately the color timing is quite different, much warmer and yellow-ish than the previous Blu-rays
Breathless: November 4th in a Limited Edition package
Total Recall: November 18th
Le Cercle Rouge: November 18th
I've been watching some more French films recently, particularly Jean-Pierre Melville's work, and I've absolutely fallen in love. Once I heard Le Cercle Rouge was in the Collection, I wanted it immediately: unfortunately, though, it's out of print and costs nearly $100 on Amazon. My wallet is already dead from the B&N sale, so no way am I paying that much for one DVD. Are there any other good releases of this movie that you guys would recommend instead?
I really enjoyed this. A fantastic crime movie with a tense, exciting heist sequence. Gives its scenes plenty of room to breathe and the intensity just simmers. It reminded me a lot of Rififi which I had seen a few years ago. Been meaning to watch Melville's Le Samourai as well, so that might have to be next!
Iβm a sucker for these French caper flicks. Give. Me. More.
Iβm looking for movies that would fit with the likes of Le Samurai (1967), Le Cercle Rouge (1970) Tokyo Drifter (1966) or The Harder They Come (1972).
Essentially I am looking for heavily stylized non-American crime movies from 60s/70s or 80s. (Easy Rider (1969)/ The Friends of Eddie Coyle (1973) would be examples from American cinema.
I think all of these seem to have a have focus on the music in them as well.
Is there anything anyone knows of from Italy / Russia / England etc?
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks in advance
I picked up the CC Le Cercle Rouge on Blu-ray before it went out of print, but it took me several years after to actually watch it. A week ago, I'm about 1:55:00 into the film, in the middle of the jewel heist, on the edge of my seat when the screen goes blank, the timecode freezes and a god-awful screeching sound starts pouring out of my speakers. I try skipping ahead, but the whole remainder of the disc has the same issue. I was super-bummed because I know it's OOP and copies are $150-200 through resellers. I write to Criterion explaining my situation. I'm expecting some kind of credit towards another film in exchange for the faulty disc. To my great surprise and joy, they send me a new, working copy of Le Cercle Rouge! I was able to finish watching it (highly recommend!) and it went from being junk to being one of the gems of my collection again! Thanks Criterion, for your amazing customer service!
Edit: some other examples would be Reservoir Dogs, Cool Hand Luke, and Bulitt
A great opportunity to catch these OOP crime classics from Melville!

Jean-Pierre Melville masterpiece, this movie has to be one of the best crime/ heists movies ever if not the best, do you guys recommend any crime classic movies of the same magnitude?
Need some help in choosing between these two movies for the weekend. Since neither Army of Shadows or Le Cercle Rouge is on FilmStruck, I need to go down to my university library to check one out (only one at a time). Eventually I will watch both of them, but which would you recommend watching first?
So Iβm doing a podcast (real amateur podcast, I am not a famous comedian in LA) and the first film I decided to talk about is Le Cercle Rouge. Itβs one of my all time favorites. I donβt own the oop blu ray or dvd. I only own the studiocanal version. I was reading that the criterion has an essay by John Woo. If you own it could you possibly take a picture of the essay or if you know if it exists in pdf please give me a link. Maybe even if you know some interesting facts about the movie or Melville in general Iβd love to hear it. Thank you in advance.

And speaking of oddly out-of-print stuff, any thoughts on which Strange Days release is best?
Well, what did everyone think?
