I just came back from a 16-day trip to Finland (with a few other stops) over New Years. Since I'm playing a game of connect the dots with previous trips I've taken, I started by briefly revisiting Stockholm, Sweden, and flew home from Tallinn, Estonia. Everything in between was done overland. I traveled Lapland in Sweden last year (same time period), so I knew what to expect.
Stockholm, Sweden - 1 night
train Stockholm -> Lulea - 1 night
(Lulea to Rovaniemi, Finland via Tornio/Haparanda)
Rovaniemi - 2 nights
Inari - 3 nights
Kiilopaa / Saariselka - 3 nights
(bus to Rovaniemi, layover Rovaniemi)
train from Rovaniemi to Turku (change in Tampere) - 1 night
Turku - 1 night
Helsinki - 3 nights
Tallinn, Estonia - 1 night
It's never enough time. I felt very rushed for much of it, although there's nothing I would've dropped.
I'd already been to Stockholm, and this time had a full day before taking the night train up to Lulea, so I got to do a few things I hadn't done last time (Vasa Museum, totally worth it!). I'd prebooked a sleeper on the night train, which was close to the same cost as flying, and saved a night of accomodation. The timetables for public busses through to Rovaniemi also lined up better with the train schedule versus flying.
Rovaniemi was a small city, but didn't feel worth more than 2 nights. It's hard to get far enough away to really catch the aurora, to be honest. On the other hand, I really enjoyed the amount of time I had in Inari and Kiilopaa, which was relaxing because there's not a ton to do in those places unless you pack the time full of expensive activities. Besides that, you can easily walk 5-10 minutes away and get away from most light pollution, which means you can hunt for the aurora by yourself instead of booking a pricey tour.
Note that Inari is sizable enough to be harder to get away from, whereas Kiilopaa is literally a hotel + hostel next to the entrance to the national park, and was by FAR the best viewing spot I visited in Lappi. I had two good nights for the aurora out of the 3 I was there, and there were times I could see it from my dorm window! It was a few days after New Years, and I had the entire dorm to myself. It's also close enough to Saariselka, and there's a shuttle, so I got to go snowboarding for a day, too.
Turku was worth more time than I had for it. I'm glad I stayed the night, although I'd gotten off the overnight train in the morning, so I wound up too exh
