The 2002 film "Killing Me Softly" came about because producers wanted to remake "So I Married an Axe Murderer" (1993) but decided it needed more incest.

Killing Me Softly

Putting her life in someone elseโ€™s hands wasnโ€™t really anything new for Emma Derry. She had difficulty thinking back to a time when all the things she hadโ€“ the clothes, the job, the roof over her headโ€“ and all the things she wasโ€“ a billionaire, an Ivy League graduate, a beauty queenโ€“ were solely the product of her own efforts. Never could she point to a car or a boyfriend or a promotion and say, โ€œThatโ€™s all because of me.โ€ Because it never was. People had always had a hand in her outwardly personal successes. Emmaโ€™s life was really just one big hop to the front of the line with no one ever saying a word about it. She would have it no other way. Jack was one of those front-of-the-line finds and, naturally, Emma got first pick. Jack was handsome and endlessly wealthy, only rivaled in that realm by Emma herself. With his determined eyes and the chip on his shoulder that made him work too hard, Emma thought he would make the perfect husband. She wanted him right away. And, just as things had always gone for Emma, she got what she wanted.

Emma won the most eligible bachelor on the market because she had the money that Jack couldnโ€™t help but give chase. Unlike Emma, Jack was born into a family that could be described by only half the phrase โ€œfilthy richโ€ and not the attractive half. He had had to work tirelessly to get to where has was now and at a pace he wasnโ€™t sure he could sustain in his later years. And slowing down in any capacity meant moving backwards towards a past life with which he never wanted to be reacquainted. Being with Emma would allow Jack to slow and still remain at a safe distance from the sad, poor kid he used to be.

Derry family observers viewed Emma and Jackโ€™s marriage as evidence for the notion that the family had too much money for their own good. Reaping the seemingly endless rewards that come with owning various fast food restaurant chains, Emma never wanted for anything and, by association, neither did those close to her. Thus, it was always a point of ambiguity as to whether those around Emma liked her or liked her money. Onlookers noticed when boyfriends spent more time talking with Emmaโ€™s father than they did with her and when friends seemed to care more about where Emmaโ€™s old Gucci shoes were going to end up than about Emma herself. Outsiders reveled in the little ways money seemed to actually work against her.

To the outside world, Emma was hugely confident and sure that she was a gift to whomever she granted herself. But in

โ€œKilling me Softlyโ€ - Sinister placement of $100 wine vouchers

If you ever wondered why when ordering a โ€œStop Drinkingโ€ book or some other media, you get an offer for a $100 wine voucher, here is the answer.

The Economist has a great article this week. โ€œAlcohol firms promote moderate drinking but it would ruin them.โ€

If you canโ€™t get the link let me know. Iโ€™ll send it.

The study divided people into 4 categories -

Non-drinkers = Zero units per week

Moderate drinkers = 4 units per week

Hazardous drinkers = 24 units per week

Harmful drinkers = 73 units per week

The study found that 25% of Britons drink hazardous or harmful amounts.

They represent 68% of Industry Revenues!

While the alcohol industry has pitched itself as part of the solution, they would not survive if everyone was a โ€œModerateโ€ drinker.

This explains why a Stop Drinking book comes with a $100 voucher for alcohol. The LAST thing they want, is for YOU to stop drinking!

Today, in the U.S., alcohol firms spend 31% more on lobbying than tobacco firms...... That doesnโ€™t include Vaping.

Stay Strong your SoberNauts! Send a message to Big Bev!

Just realized the significance of Killing Me Softly

So I was watching a video about Stockholm Syndrome and its origin, and basically the syndrome became named after the Norrmalmstorg bank robbery, where Jan Erik Olsson killed a police officer, and held another and some other people hostage for days. When they were released, the hostages attempted to protect the image of Olsson, somewhat sympathizing with him, thus bringing forward what is now known as Stockholm Syndrome. But what is crazy is that apparently during the time he held his victims hostage, he walked around the vaults singing โ€œKilling Me Softlyโ€. I wonder if this is a nod to the origin of Stockholm Syndrome? Iโ€™m not sure if anyone else has noticed this or not, but I thought this was interesting.

Amazon Stock Price: Killing Me Softly

Well f**k. Amazon (AMZN) just announced that they made $92MM last quarter versus a loss of $126MM in the same quarter last year. So what did investors do? They decided to reward Amazon with an $85 per share increase after hours. Thatโ€™s an additional $40Billion or so in value added. So now they are officially worth more than Wal-Mart. And that is beyond stupidโ€ฆand here is why:

In the last twelve months (TTM โ€“ Trailing Twelve Months), Wal-Mart has $485Billion in revenue. Amazon has $96Billion in the last 12 months. So Wal-Mart, by sales, is 5 times larger. But it is worth LESS?!?!?! Okโ€ฆmaybe itโ€™s about profitโ€ฆ

In the last twelve months, Wal-Mart has made $16Billion in net income. Amazon has LOST $188MM. Wait. So Wal-Mart has MADE A PROFIT of $16Billion and Amazon has LOST $188,000,000โ€ฆ.LOSTโ€ฆ.Oh but wait, everyone says itโ€™s about the growthโ€ฆ

I know. So Amazonโ€™s BEST argument is that they are investing in more and more things to make the experience for users better and grow their media collection and blah blah blah. Ok. Fine. Then why canโ€™t you make money off of $96B EVEN DOING THAT?!?!

Their best margins ever were almost 4%โ€ฆWal-Mart, which is brick and mortar and supposed to cost more, is higher on average. So letโ€™s assume that they hit 4% in profit margin in the long run because of their investments and they finally start to turn a profitโ€ฆon $96Billion in sales, thatโ€™s profit of $3.8Billion. So at a market cap of $265Billion, thatโ€™s a price to earnings ratio of 70 still! Which is still 5 times more than historical averages especially for such a mature company because REMEMBER, Amazon is a MATURE company. It isnโ€™t a start-up! Itโ€™s been around for 20 years!

Sure it is! They surprised everyone by growing 20% from last yearโ€™s same quarter. Ok. So letโ€™s assume they continue to grow 20% per year and letโ€™s assume Wal-Mart only grows at 3% per yearโ€ฆhow long will it take for Amazon to catch up? Remember, assuming 20% growth per year is HIGHLY unlikelyโ€ฆis it impossible? No. But even Amazonโ€™s growth since 2007 has slowed significantly. From 2007 to 2008, before the big recession, Amazonโ€™s revenue grew 30%. So there is going to be a slow down. Have they had better years since then? Sure, but here is their year over year growth since 2007: 30%, 27.9%, 39.5%, 40.5%, 27%, 21.9%, 19.5%, and this last quarter they SURPRISED everyone with 20% growth.

So back to my point: Letโ€™s assume 20% growth for Amazon every year and only 3% for Wal-Mart every
