I love small missions like this! The Karelian language is in danger of disappearing in Russia as the population of pure ethnic Karelians is slowly decreasing. How much can you understand Karelian language?

Inspired by this post in /r/Finland, I'm curious if Karelian is easier than Finnish to the native speakers of Estonian?

Personally, as a Finnish speaker, it is easier than Estonian but the example given on the post is harder to understand than the example given by /u/tempelli, which is a news broadcast in Karelian by the Finnish Broadcasting Company. Reason being probably because the Karelians speaking Karelia sound more Russian than the Finnish one.

Finnish inspired fantasy recommendations

I've been looking into Finnish folklore recently, since Finland has its own very unique mythology and legends, and I wondered if there are any fantasy stories based on or revolving around the culture and folklore of Finland. I've not had much luck looking so far.

I don't mind so much about the particular genre or style; I'm much more interested in things like settings, characters, myths, fantasy creatures, or how the folklore is applied, even if it's just a reference to one specific legend that otherwise isn't especially important. They don't just have to be from just Finland either, as getting to look into Estonian, Karelian, or SΓ‘mi fantasy fiction for example would be interesting as well.

I have not yet read the Kalevala (though I very much intend to) and while I don't speak Finnish fluently myself, I am learning the language and reading other books in Finnish. If the only books you know of that fit the bill have not been translated into English that's fine for me too, though it naturally helps if they have.

Any recommendations would be most welcome

Hear the Eagles Scream

When the Humans arrived, there was no cheering.

Nobody was bothered too.

More meat for the slaughter.

The emblazoned signs on their suits, red, white, blue, green, yellow, orange… none of it mattered to us.

We all knew their fates.

Death is all that awaits…

On Obraxus Prime.

-Chapter 13, Stories of the Second Intragalactic War

I was a private at Military Base Alpha Kilo, serving on Obraxus Prime, fighting with the coalition forces against the combine. I heard we were receiving a transfer from the wrapped up conflict on Obraxus Minor, which thankfully we had won, so no cut off supplies for us.

Now, those transfers were humans. The humans were regarded as rather ordinary, with no particularly impressive abilities aside from their flexibility.

We all knew their fates, dead in a mass grave, sent home to your family in a casket if you’re lucky. These mammals were different though.

The first I noticed was a rather rudimentary aerial vehicle flying over the base. It was emblazoned with 11 flags on each side, all composed of Red, Blue, and White.

I could barely read Terran, but I found a rough translation of the language to basic on the side when it landed.

β€œUS: 505th Screaming Eagles”

β€œENG: 2nd South Staffordshire Regiment”

β€œCAN: 1st Canadian Parachute Division”

β€œJPN: 409th Volunteer Airborne Group”

β€œRoC: 678th Sun-Yat-Sen’s Preachers”

β€œRF: 789th Karelian Droptroops”

β€œANZAC: 475th Dropbears”

β€œFRN: 897th Revolutionaries”

β€œSCO: 642nd Highlander Drop Group”

β€œABS: African Horns Drop Group”

β€œCEU: 563rd Armor Dropping Division”

I noticed that air was included a lot in that, which was weird since air battle had been phased out in favor of orbital conflict, which raged above and kept me awake every night.

I was soon after deployed to the second front near the planetary capital, New Lexington.

Harsh enemy resistance opened upon us quickly as we soon reached the West River.

One night, when I lied down on the cold beds of a medical tent from a shot to the leg, I heard an infernal screeching. At first I thought it must be one of the new humans being shipped in, but there wasn’t anybody passing through the shut entrances to the tents.

I looked up through the translucent roof into the starry sky above, and saw a great wave of aerial vehicles blotting out the twinkling lights that usually dotted the skies.

β€œPrivate Johnson, are we clear for a jump?”

β€œNa

running dry on options for help learning Karelian, before you suggest other subs, ive already asked here (i think it was here...) and been redirected (and promptly downvoted) and tried there with absolutely no avail, im asking here now with reason and substance to reason, not aimless wandering

I was already aware places such as r/linguistics and r/languagelearning would have no substance or help considering the incredibly small speaking population of the Karelian language and the people who know of this languages existence being reflective of that population. I ask here because Russia is a significantly larger country, not just size obviously, but population and has much less historical and cultural connection to Karelia. I understand that there is likely no one on this subreddit who was alive when Karelia was Finnish, much less alive long enough to remember those times, yet my options rather quickly exhaust themselves.

I have two resources. A Russian website from 2004 that requires me to double translate everything making it undesirable for learning, and a beautifully composed bachelors degree thesis from a student at Masaryk in Brno, Czechia. However, these are not enough resources by which to learn a language from.

I've attempted to make contact with Matti Meistamo, head of the linguistics department at the University of Helsinki to no response as of 8 days later. I've also just now sent emails to Siunev Sergeevich of Petrozavodsk University in Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia, Russia, as well as an open email to Kizhi state open-air museum in Petrozavodsk as well, which states to specify and have been providing preservation and knowledge of Karelian culture for 40+ years. I've also recently made friends with someone in Helsinki, however, he is not knowledgeable on the subject. This wasn't expected of him though, as the circumstances for our meeting are completely unconnected to my pursuits of learning Karelian.

I don't need specific super helpful perfect language learning courses or some rosetta stone, but if anyone has even the slightest idea of where I can turn to look for resources it would be greatly appreciated.

I understand what I am asking here, hyper specific materials on a hyper specific language where broad materials are already incredibly hard to come by, and as such I am incredibly grateful to any and all attempts to help here, even its a goose chase in the end or a shot in the dark, the attempt is genuinely appreciated, thank you.

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

The Kalevala as the Finnish national epic

Hello there! Non-finnish here.I'm doing some research on Finnish folklore and mythology, and the first thing that I found is the Kalevala, which is regarded as the Finnish epic by excelence. I like to remain skeptical on things I read on the internet (especially Wikipedia and not-primary sources), so I was wondering if the Kalevala still has culture relevance in the country to this day, as a symbol of national identity. Or if there are other literature works more relevant to the folklore.

Basically I wanted confirmation of the importance of the Kalevala. I don't want to disrepect Finnish culture by talking about things I don't know about, such as this. And I think asking actual people from Finland might be better than just buying what an internet page says.

Also, if this post doesn't belong to the subreddit I'm really sorry. I didn't find any other subreddit about finnish mythology. Please tell me and I'll inmediately remove the post!

edit: Thank you very much to everyone for answering! I'm glad I asked, having an insightful view it's so useful
