What's in Chris Squire's basslines? Also a comparison to John Paul Jones
I'm just so impressed at the complexity that Chris Squire displays in his playing. I'm trying to learn his style and I had just a few questions that would help me to form a clearer picture.
- How does he settle on his rhythm, is there a process that he seems to go through? Does he deliberately think about how to construct a rhythm that sits well with the rest of the band? Or does he just play by feel, and leave pockets for the other instruments to fill?
- How does he decide when to stop playing the "required bassline" and to go off and do his own thing? Or does he just jam over everything, without worrying about trying to lay a complimentary foundation for the other instruments?
- How does he choose his notes? Does he play chord tones, scales, etc. How does he choose chord progressions?
- Does he adhere strictly to ideas? For a given song, does he always play it the same way live as he does on the studio version, or does he vary songs every time?
One of the ways I learn is by comparing new things to what I already know. In my opinion, John Paul Jones plays bass with a similar style: his basslines are very melodic, dynamic, and intricate as well. Of course John Paul Jones doesn't have Squire's distinctive bass tone, and John Paul Jones sticks more to blues scales, but I notice that both players aren't the type to just play the root note over and over again in eighth notes, and I want to learn more about what makes them think the way they do when it comes to varying the rhythm and the note selections.
