A list of puns related to "Jet Li"
I was at uni in the 2000s and bought some fake "martial arts" movie for Β£1, stupidly thinking I was buying "Jet Li", not "Jet Lee", or "Jet Le" (some deliberate misspelling).
THE DVD had a really minimalist cover, I think. I remember it being mostly dark, with the title possibly in silver. I'm not even sure if there were any pictures at all.
I went home and started watching the thing, but realised my mistake immediately. The film quality was really poor quality - quite grainy. Everything about it was terrible. I only watched a few minutes, but I remember a scene with a girl and guy fighting. The actors did not have an athletic build at all, and they appeared to be totally unfamiliar with martial arts. A couple of times the girl almost lost her balance, completely unaided by her opponent. Or she just seemed very lacking in confidence.
Everything about it was super cheap. It was clearly just made so there was a "movie" to put in the DVD case whenever someone was dumb enough to mistake "Li" for "Lee" (Hello!).
So, why do I want to track it down? Well, in the years that have elapsed, I've developed a taste for the finer things in life - namely, bad movies.
So yeah, is anyone aware of this super obscure DVD? I know there are some "made in Hong Kong" movies that pulled the same trick - "Jet Lee" instead of "Li" - but they seem to have far higher production values. I mean, they seem to have costumes, sets, props, a cast of more or less capable actors, and be shot in decent quality.
I know it's a long shot, but if anyone knows what I'm on about, that'd be amazing!
There's currently a top thread on r/starterpacks discussing how Hollywood represents Asian women, with a sub thread talking about the lack of positive representation for Asian men. Of course, there's always someone who brings up Jackie Chan and Jet Li as a counterargument. Why is this so prevalent? I'm not saying they're bad representation, far from it. I'm saying: the positive representation of Asian men in Hollywood for the last 20+ years rests on the back of two people??? That's the bone we're thrown and expect to be satisfied with for decades? Is that what they expect Shang Chi will be too? Something to shut is up for several more years? That drop of representation pales in comparison to the ratio of White men, Asian women, heck even Black women on screen!
This scene is amazing. I'm sure it inspired the cold open when Spike kicks the woolong coin into the head of one of the armed robbers.
I personally think the pool ball makes a better impact...
