Should I be concerned about a popping sensation after inguinal hernia repair surgery?

Hey everyone,

Last Friday I got a surgery for an indirect inguinal hernia using a mesh. The first few days were rough but at this point I am walking pretty well and I just feel generalized weakness of my abdominal muscles and some pressure because of swelling. This evening I took a shower and as I was drying my legs off I felt a pop from the surgery site.

I don’t have any new pain at all, however I am still somewhat concerned. Is this concern valid?

Just had inguinal hernia surgery 4 days ago, feel great but sore where the hernia used to be.

22 yo/ male. I do bodybuilding and am very fit / healthy. Just had a laparoscopic right side inguinal hernia repair done 4 days ago. I’ve been walking pretty much all day today and feel great but towards the evening the area where the hernia was, and mesh now is, is sore. Should I be worried about damaging the mesh or is this just to be expected for a while?

Really worried about inguinal hernia surgery

Basically, I have a small inguinal hernia on my lower left side. I saw a surgeon who does a lot of hernia surgeries and he said that he would use mesh to repair the hernia. I wasn't worried until I started researching and seeing so many negative stories about chronic side effects :/ I'm a woman in her mid-20s who is really active (run, hike/backpack, rock climb, bike) and apparently it's uncommon for women to have the kind of hernia that I have.

Has anyone had a good or normal experience getting mesh hernia repair? Or other women who've had an inguinal hernia? I don't even have frequent symptoms anymore so I'm wondering if I should even get the surgery soon or not. Tbh all the horrible stories are making me question if it's worth it.

Pain almost 2 years after inguinal hernia surgery.

I had a mesh repair done for bilateral inguinal hernias in June 2020 (at the time I was 19 y/o) and about a week afterward I had severe shooting pains on the right side that mostly resolved after several weeks. However, the pain has been recurring with varying severity on and off up until the present day. Other than that I have also had aching pains that come and go in my left side since the surgery as well. I just wanted to ask if anybody here has had a similar experience, and what you did about it. I have gone back to see my surgeon several times and every time he says the repairs are β€œsolid.”

Inguinal hernia surgery - I need advice

Hello. I've had inguinal hernia on the right side for two years now and on the left side for a year. I had my laparoscopic surgery with mesh implanted 9 days ago. I'm worried about swollen spermatic cord on the right side. At first it was kinda painful but now after a week it's just hard and sensitive.

I know swelling is normal but I'm worried because under fingers I can track it/feel it whole way to the place where hernia was and I guess now mesh is. Left side is normal but right side is swollen. I'm not sure should I seek medical attention or no?

My father had the same surgery two years ago and he had the swelling for 4 weeks and it's still painful to the touch.

Can mesh overlap with spermatic cord and cause problems? How often is it and how does it manifest?

Thank you.

Update: everything is okay and in its place. Swelling is normal and it should pass in the next month or so. Pain/stinging stopped. Doctor said I shouldn't sit more than 15-20 minutes at the time and that sitting was probably the cause of pain.

Wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience with inguinal hernia surgery

The hernia is on my left side. I had a laparoscopic repair done with a mesh on my left side. 14 days later I'm still sore at the big incision and I feel a hardball where the patch is that is sore and to the left of the big incision which is getting better over time. When I sneeze I hold my tummy where the big incision is and where the hernia is. I can still feel something push when I hold my hernia. It's the same it was when I had it and would hold it when I sneezed. I talked to the surgeon and he said to come in and two weeks and we'd know for sure but I'm wondering if this is something anyone else has experienced. Am I going to have to get the surgery again? :/

Pouch Underwear for Post Inguinal Hernia Surgery Repair

Hello,

I just wanted to share something that has personally helped me considerably through my hernia repair recovery. At the recommendation of the NP from my surgeon's office, I started to wear pouch underwear. (Underwear with a groin pouch to hold the testicles and penis in place)

This underwear has been very helpful and has provided me with additional comfort throughout my recovery. Hopefully, this info can help others.

For those who are interested, I bought a Hanes 5-pack for $7 from Walmart. They look like boxer briefs.

Post surgery inguinal Shouldice Hernia Repair question

So about 2 months ago, at the start of October, I've had a inguinal hernia surgery (located at left side of my groin) using Shouldice Hernia Repair method, no mesh, since I am 22 years old. Everything is going fine, I've still got swelling, doctor told me to rest for 2 months, then I can start jogging and doing light exercise which I started doing, and 4 months until starting strenous exercise (such as combat sports, weight lifting). After runs I'm now noticing a lump (looks like a hernia) at my right groin (I had also had surgery on the right side with no mesh in 2017), but it causes me no pain during runs. But it feels at times like sometimes theres something there in my right side, and left side too, feeling weird, except the soreness of my groin. Is it just the swelling going around and it's nothing harmless, or did I just get another hernia? I can't see my doctor right now which is why I am asking hereI am a combat sports athlete, and I cant afford to pay for another hernia surgery right now, so I hope I'm just imagining things.

My lower back on the side of the surgery also hurts like crazy whenever I walk is that normal? Walking back and forth to the bathroom counts as moving around? The surgeon suggested I walk around to help the healing process. I'm also feeling pressure as if I need to poop but I'm super scared to even try the pain is so intense 😫

Inguinal hernia surgery - Moderate pain 3mo after surgery around incision poin when touching - Normal?

The title pretty much describes it but:

39yo male here, about 3 months ago i had a Inguinal hernia surgery.

Had a mesh installed, surgery type was an incision.

Healed up nicely.

When I press the area below the incision point, fairly close to my penis I would describe the location, I feel pain / discomfort.

Definatly not debilitating type of pain. On a scale of 10, about a 3 or 4.

Like I said, only when I press on this area. Otherwise I go about my day forgetting the surgery every took place.

Is this normal 3 months after the surgery?

Big thanks to anyone who can chime in with their experience with a similar surgery.

Working out post inguinal hernia surgery

Hey everyone,

Looking for advice to go about doing core exercises after inguinal hernia surgery.

Back in August 2021 I had right side inguinal hernia surgery (robotic assisted laproscopic with mesh).

I'm just now getting back into weightlifting and other exercises.

Still very concerned about the prospects of getting a hernia on my left side, as well as causing mesh failure with my right side.

Weightlifting is one of those things that I need to do.

That being said, I'm very averse to doing abdominal exercises, but I know I need to focus on my core to hopefully prevent future hernia issues.

Does anyone have good core exercises that they've done after inguinal hernia surgery.

Also, does anyone have insight into stomach vacuuming exercises?

I hear this is a great exercise to do for preventing inguinal hernias, but I'm not sure how safe this is after surgery.

Cheers.

Left side Inguinal Hernia Repair: Open Surgery (mesh) I took notes every morning since the day of surgery figured I should share it here.

Surgery day/ day 1:

12:00: arrival

13:30: surgery time

~14:30: woke up seeing double still high from the anesthesia.

15:05: in the car going home, took 2 norcos. First day was fine. I got to eat finally and ate quite a bit actually. Watched a bunch of TV. Was able to walk around/to and from bathroom/upstairs/backyard for evening tea. I was surprised how OK I felt, Was really easy to get to sleep. Woke up once at night sleeping on my side on accident, messed up.

Day 2: 6:45am woke up. with a lot of pain in the surgery area. Maybe because of how I slept. Maybe because the anesthesia wore off. Until I stood up I didn’t realize how bad the pain is. Pain level through the roof. I thought it was going to be a piece of cake since yesterday wasn’t bad at all. Really painful today. Couldn’t even walk to the bathroom without feeling intense pain in the area where mesh is installed. Can’t stand up straight. Going from laying to sitting is even horrible. Going to eat a banana and take more norcos.

Day 3: not as much pain straight away in the morning like yesterday but I slept on my back. Walking is much easier as well. Was able to get out of bed and walk downstairs with manageable amount of pain. Pain got worse towards the evening. Last pain killer was taken in the morning. Backed up haven’t had a bowel movement since Tuesday morning(day of surgery).

Day 4: woke up at 3am. Couldn’t sleep. No pain meds but pain was more manageable than the first couple days. Walking is easier, still can’t stand up straight and have random twinges of pain. Still hurts to sit up straight. Drank coffee and finally had a bowel movement, SLOWLY unloaded quite a bit. I have been taking stool softeners for 2 days. Still in pain. Taking it easy and resting, walking around the house only.

Day 5: waking up was easier. Had more coffee and another bowel movement(woohoo). Certain sitting positions still hurt very bad. Random twinges of pain. Took a walk around the block and walking around the house more.

Day 6: pain much better although it is more swollen than before. That might be due to the fact that I’m Walking around more. Went to a couple stores with my gf. Still not doing any β€œhard” work. Not lifting anything more than a couple pounds.

Day 7: took the day off from work to rest and relax for one more day. Tomorrow I’ll start working from home. Pain is more manageable although sitting in some positions or for standing for prolonged periods causes pain.Β I am more "active" w

Surgery, or not (Left inguinal hernia) Oregon Recommendation

I'm really confused. I have an inguinal hernia about the size of half golf ball. Sometimes I can't feel it, and other times, it's pretty apparent when it bulges. I met with a surgeon to have it repaired (thinking that was my only option) and he talked me out of surgery as my pain level was very low. He said to keep doing what I'm doing, running, biking, lifting weights. He said what I was feeling was most likely fat and not intestine and it wasn't dangerous. He said lots of people live their entire lift with a hernia and don't even know it.

I am biking and running, but I cut out most of the weight lifting which makes me sad. When I sneeze, I get pain, so I know something is still wrong down there.

I've been lurking on this board and it seems like it's not a matter of if I'll need surgery, but when? I didn't feel too comfortable with this surgeon, so I'd like a second opinion. Mesh is scary, but that seems to be what surgeons here in Oregon use. I'm also scared of open vs. laparoscopic. Seems like open has a much longer recovery.

Does anyone here know of an experience hernia repair surgeon in Oregon? I'm hoping to get back on my feet ASAP as it's hard to build up running/cycling endurance.

Added info:

I'm 39 y/o male. 5'10" 170 lbs.

I run 15-20 miles/week and bike another 20-40 miles.

Inguinal hernia: Open or laparoscopic method if I'm feeling pain already before surgery?

Hi, I've found a good, experienced surgeon who suggested laparoscopic surgery for my small inguinal hernia, right side. (Otherwise, btw, I'm thin, active and healthy.) My surgeon seemed to say that I shouldn't be in that much pain now, or be too worried about it, but I am in pain. I'll admit that I am super sensitive when it comes to feeling body aches and pains, I feel everything, and I guess that plays a part.

But I found an old study that seemed to say (and please don't take my word for it, I don't want to spread bad news here, it's an old study, I haven't found a newer one) that a person may have more nerve pain after from laparoscopic thus making open surgery their pref.

I don't even know if I have a choice on my HMO, but if I'm feeling pain before the surgery, a weird nerve pain that is at times worse to the touch, is there a chance that laparoscopic could be wrong for me? Or is it so common today that I shouldn't worry about it? Does anyone know which method doctors and nurses choose for themselves when they have a hernia?

Also, apparently surgeons don't have much faith in ultrasounds. And I'll have trouble paying what they want for a CT, it's steep on my insurance plan. Is it okay if they diagnose and go to surgery without an image of it? It seems that may be okay to do from what I've read. Thanks

Preparing for inguinal hernia repair surgery

Hi folks!

My son (5 months) is scheduled for hernia repair surgery next week and aside from trying not to stress myself out, we’re trying to plan for what he’ll need for recovery.

I thoroughly expect to spend a few days mostly in bed and letting him comfort nurse as much as he wants but wondered if anyone has advice or suggestions to help make things easier. He’s recently begun to get very clingy (we’re in leap 5 of wonder weeks) and can be very fussy if mom and dad are out of his sight.

Since it’s an inguinal hernia, the incision will be under where his diaper sits. Does anyone have suggestions regarding diapers and keeping things clean down there post surgery? We use both cloth and disposable diapers. Grandma is suggesting we use extra large diapers for the extra absorbency.

Advice and anecdotal stories welcome. I’m also just trying not to give in to the anxiety of it all. He’s still such a little guy, it’s painful to think of him on an operating table.

Thanks!

So After Two Years, Finally got Inguinal hernia Open Surgery

Hello Reddit! I've never done this before and not really had a big event happen (In my opinion anyway), so here we go.

Some Backstory I guess; So on the 6th Of May of this year I finally got my Right Inguinal Open surgery after putting off from about 2019 till the beginning of this year, I was told I was going to be waiting at least a year for my surgery because of how COVID had affected the Waiting lists (I live in the UK for context) and such, as the regular waiting time was actually 3-6 months anyway. But they called and actually booked the surgery for 6th may, so yay nhs did something, much sooner than I expected! I had a slight complication that had developed which also needed to be fixed as well as the Hernia was made a lot worse when I was going to the gym. Recovery has been really rough, but its now been about 3 weeks with me going back to work very shortly.

Numbness and discomfort post-double inguinal hernia open surgery

38/m 4 weeks ago I had a double inguinal hernia repair, open surgery with mesh on both sides. I had a previous repair on the left side due to fluid getting trapped in my testicle sack, when I was 24. At the time I was told this was not a true hernia repair, and no mesh was used. Then I more recently had a lump and significant pain on my groin on the left side, less so on the right, but was diagnosed with a major hernia on left, minor on right. The surgeon suggested I have both done at once to avoid multiple recoveries, which made sense. He also said open surgery is the preference due to higher rate of complications from laparoscopic repair. They also suggested a single neurectomy be done on both sides to reduce the chances of chronic pain post surgery. Fast forward to today... I still have no feeling on the entire right side of my right thigh, aside from what I can only describe as an itchy burning sensation every now and then. I still have major inflammation of my abdomen. Also, my entire pelvic region from my scars down to my pubic bone are completely numb. I’m also highly sensitive in the entire area surrounding my penis, including my penis. I had some bruising of the testicles and penis in the first two weeks, but that has subsided. The surgeon prescribed me prednisone to help with the inflammation. That helped a bit, but now I’m done with it and the inflammation is back. I’m worried that 1. My body is rejecting the mesh (the inflammation) and 2. The surgeon screwed up and clipped/pinched some nerves unintended. I don’t want this to be an on going issue. Should I try to find a second opinion, or just wait it out and hope time heals whatever is going on. This is significantly diminishing my quality of life. I honestly regret having the surgery in the first place.

Has anyone ever cured their inguinal hernia without surgery/naturally

I’ve had an inguinal hernia since I was 11 (I’m 21 now). From 5th to about 8th grade, I would cross my legs over my penis and apply pressure which eventually led to me developing a hernia like bulge on the left side of my groin around 6th grade. I finally told my mom at 7th or 8th grade that I might have a hernia and she took me to go get a physical. The doctor said that it was a hernia so I went to children’s hospital and got examined by a surgeon. I explained to him how I believe I got it. He said that it might be the way your just shaped and didn’t believe in unnecessary surgery since it didn’t really bother me (it would hurt here and there but has never really bothered me at all). I’ve had it ever since then and have only felt it when I get high sometimes, cough, sneeze, or laugh really hard. Sometimes it goes back in on its own but bulges out minutes later. When I lay down, the area is flat but the left side bulges out when I stand up. For some reason, I feel like this effected my β€œsize” down there especially since I developed this during puberty and that my penis was involved with the pressure (I’m 6’1, size 13 shoes. I know they said that doesn’t matter but I’m a solid 5 inches, an inch/inch in a half when soft). Anyway I thought about surgery but I’m a big believer that the body shouldn’t be cut, plus I’ve heard lots of horror stories such as people getting the surgery and having problems getting erected, getting the surgery and experience even more pain, getting the surgery and having problems with their mesh, and even heard that someone’s penis shrunk and stopped working after surgery. I know everyone’s experience is different but I’m a huge believer that everything can be cured naturally. I recently saw that someone cured their inguinal hernia by cleaning up their diet and going vegan and also by eating aloe vera. I also thought about vibrational and instrument healing over that area. With that being said, has anyone ever cured their inguinal hernia without surgery and is their any other option for surgery besides the mesh method?

She got antibiotics, there was an immediate improvement and we thought ok, we suck for not doing it sooner but at least it's done. She is so happy to be able to hold her pee. A couple weeks later she starts having accidents again, another uti. At the end of this run of antibiotics, I was talking to her while she was peeing (for some reason lol) and noticed she was in pain at the end. I tested her pee and no wbc, but since there was high ph, a bit of protein, and she had pain, I sent her to the Dr with my husband the next day. No wbcs, Dr said protein is normal for young kids. He prescribed amoxocillan anyway, im assuming becuase of the pain. My husband was scolded for bringing her in for yet more abx lol. We did that round but it did nothing, she was having accidents before it was even done. She had a c&s and it was apparently fine, we didn't hear anything back.

The last antibiotics were 2 or 3 weeks ago and she's back to having multiple accidents daily and still complains of pain. It's sad, tonight she asked for medicine to help with her pee. The sticks test for a lot, not sure if any of this will help:

pH: always high, today it was >9 Protein: theres always a little bit, usually 1 shade darker than normal Wbcs: no Blood: no Glucose, nitrate, urobilinogen, sg, ketone, bilirubin are all normal

Shes not on any medications and is otherwise healthy. Her twin does not have this issue.
