This was an American series that aired in South Africa some time in the 90s. It was cancelled (on South African TV) after a few episodes, so I'm not sure if more than a single season exists for it.

The premise was that a super bright couple had home schooled their kids who were way ahead of the normal curve, but who had now allowed their kids to go to a public school. The only scene that I recall clearly was them heading off to school for the first day, where the father calls shotgun, but means that he has to sit in the back seat because the front seat has a higher fatality rate, and it wouldn't be good to have the primary bread winner die, leaving the family destitute. Then in the car, he asks one of the kids which language they will use today, and Portuguese is chosen. The whole family then start chatting in Portuguese as they drive to school.

Hi, everyone! I’m so glad to have found this community. I’d love any advice you all have for me here.

My fiancé (20M) and I (20F) decided this year that we weren’t going to try to go to every family’s house for every holiday. Last year, we drove 2.5 hours to his mom’s, and then back 5 hours in the opposite direction to my family’s holiday, and then another hour to his dad’s over the course of 3 days for Christmas. I told my fiancé I couldn’t do that again, and he agreed. So, this year, we did Thanksgiving with his dad, Christmas with my parents, and New Year’s with his mom.

Friends, my JNMIL lost her shit. DFH called her on Christmas Eve as we drove to my parents’ house to say hello. She was crying and asked why we couldn’t just come to her place for the night and then go to my family later. Um, idk, maybe because I deserve one holiday with my family too? Then, Christmas Day, she calls him sobbing uncontrollably about how he should be there.

My family doesn’t care if I miss holidays. They believe (and so do I) that it’s about the time you spend together, not the actual date you do it on. But, here’s the kicker: we’re at JNMIL’s house right now for the New Year. Last night, we went to a bar (we’re in a state where a parent can buy their underage child a drink at a bar, so I DD’d them last night). JNMIL switched the topic to Christmas and said, “Yeah, that’s never happening again.” I immediately said, “We have three families to see for the holidays, so we’re rotating. It’s definitely happening again.” FDH just quietly said, “We’re trying, Mom.” They were both shitfaced at that point, so I quickly changed the subject.

I’m livid over this. Don’t I deserve to see my family at Christmas too? Does she expect us to make that god awful drive every year, or for me to just always miss my family’s Christmas? It’s one thing to celebrate late every few times because I’ve missed it, but every fucking year? I couldn’t be more angry with her right now.

A few of mine that I can watch (and have watched) over and over again

Golden Girls - I watch at minimum of one episode every single day (usually while I’m falling asleep) and have for the last 10 + years. I find it endlessly comforting and the best anxiety remedy. I know every line of every episode my heart and will never tire of it.

Kath & Kim - The original Australian version. I was introduced to the series by an Australian boyfriend over 12 years ago and still find it so dry and funny. I’ve watched the four seasons over and over. Nothing beats Australian humour.

Frasier - I was gifted the entire series one Christmas and make it an annual tradition to begin to watch the entire series in Boxing Day.

I remember owning a vhs tape of a how with two episodes but the intro has various scenes from other episodes two characters that stood out was a tall skinny brown/ black haired guy and a nerdy blonde haired guy his hair was really messy and long wore glasses the episode I remember for sure the tall guy gets or buys a notebook that when he drew in it whatever he drew came to life and it was monsters and they used a vacuum that he drew to catch the monsters remember this is only one episode and the school they go to is really really creepy looking not a normal school oh another clue is during the intro there’s one scene where lunchlady turns around and has fly like eyes the other episode has to do with a school play involving a mummy?

So I've seen the Friends repost a good 47 times this week (across multiple subs, I shit you not). Others like The Office and That's So Sheldon are pretty common as well. My biggest gripe with these is I can never tell if these people genuinely believe they're some sort of fucking enlightened woke free thinkers for shitting on something with a huge fan base, or if they're fully aware that plenty of people agree with them and they just wanna whore karma/attention (I suspect the latter). And why the fuck do people indulge this? Why do these posts get thousands of uptokes? Why does every Youtube comment saying "I'm only 14, but I listen to REAL music! Fuck Little Plump, I like Queen!" manage to gather thousands of likes. I'm not saying your opinion is wrong, but having an opinion doesn't fucking make you special. You're not a fucking intellectual because you don't like Mimecraft

Now let me just say that I am NOT among those outraged by DB Weiss and David Benioff's final chapter in the series. In fact, I'm a little puzzled by all the negativity. They were never masters at weaving a complex tapestry like George RR Martin, so when they ran out of hard source material and were more or less on their own, the shift to a more spectacle driven and less narratively ambitious method of storytelling after season 5 was hardly a surprise. And when you take into account their track record of writing schlocky and bombastic fare centered around major conflict (after all they were the creative force behind the hilariously dumb but unquestionably entertaining Troy, a film that reads like a blueprint for their watchmaking-by-sledgehammer philosophy of the final few Thrones seasons) these final acts make a lot of sense. I just don't get how so many people were blindsided by this. GRRM's source material was the progenitor of the world building and character intrigue elements of GoT (re the true "nuts and bolts" of the story itself), while Dan and Dave have always handled the "blood, tits, and dragons" end of the proceedings. And now that GRRM is all but out of the picture, we're left with Dan and Dave taking full control of the wheel on this homestretch. So really, when you look at the whole thing through that lens, all of this does actually make sense. Sure it's not Richard III or anything, but it is more or less in keeping with a previously established standard.

But apparently the fanbase doesn't agree. I don't think I've ever seen such massive collective tantrum over a TV show before, at least not one with this sheer amount of thinkpieces and on camera rants devoted to it. I mean yeah we had the "cut to black" kerfuffle of The Sopranos, but that was the final seconds of a single episode. GoT has had literally every episode of its final season (and then some) inundated with an unprecedented amount of scrutiny, criticism, handwringing, and straight up histrionics. It's more than a little ridiculous.

And it makes me miss BB. A lot. Every chapter of the final season of Walter White's swan song was written with the clarity and conviction of a synergistic writers' room that had a singular vision for the character(s) they loved and deeply wanted to see given a proper sendoff. Not to say that Dan and Dave don't love their characters, and I do think they're trying to deliver a satisfying ending for them, but Vince and co just seemed so much more in
