In Bram Stoker's Dracula, sunlight does NOT kill vampires, but only weakens them. And that's exactly what happens in Elder Scrolls games -- you take gradual damage and/or other debuffs, but you don't die outright. It was only when mid-20th century Hollywood films started showing sunlight instantly vaporizing vampires that the notion started to take hold, and continues to take hold to this day. So kudos to Bethesda for making it right again. Of course, this is likely just due to gameplay designs. If you die instantly in the sun it just isn't fun.
