A list of puns related to "History of North American fraternities and sororities"
Based upon some research I've found that there typically aren't any fraternities at universities in Britain. Is there anything similar?
I'm writing a fictional story about an American at a British college and I was hoping that there is some sort of society that parallels (partying, hazing, social events, campaigning, etc.)
Thanks!
It was ok the first few times, but now there seems to be nothing these clubs can think of doing. I mean, Iβve seen like 10 of them in the last few weeks. Itβs uninspired, unoriginal, low effort, and it leaves a mess wherever they do it. They just leave whipped cream to rot on the ground, the walls, and trash cans. Iβm all for charity, but this repels me.
Edit: so yeah, after this last group was done they left the whole place a mess. I talked to the two students cleaning it up, by hand, because they canβt use the pressure washer when itβs this cold.
Itβs that time of year
Hello everyone!
Our coed, service fraternity is going to have its first mixer with a sorority tomorrow afternoon. We will volunteer at a cat shelter where we can pet, feed and play with the cats there with a sorority on campus. We normally kept mixers within our fraternity, and never branched out, so we are nervous and excited, and so are the girls in the sorority, according to my friends in that sorority!
What advice do you have on keeping it fun and safe? What makes you want to mix with a fraternity again and view them positively? I do have friends in the sorority we are mixing with. Is this a good idea for a mixer?
Thanks for your advice! Sorry if this is commonly asked.
I'm conducting a super short survey for one of my classes looking at people's views on Greek life and how it can be helpful or harmful to students. I would really REALLY appreciate if some people could take a few minutes to fill this out. None of this information is going to be seen by anyone but me and my professor; just using it for a short paper in my cultural anthropology class. Here's a link to it that hopefully works: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/RJ6MK77 Any other comments/ opinions on frats and sororities and their social and academic impacts/benefits/drawbacks feel free to also just comment here too. I'll take whatever I can get. Thank you so much!
Seriously, Iβm going to keep this short, but every single response I see to people requesting that, maybe, schools should just ban Greek Life altogether in response to horrible behavior by the members of it, is met with a bunch of straw man arguments and evasions of truth.
βItβs only a small portion of frats who engage in hazing!β
Literally EVERY fraternity you research on Wikipedia has a huge, deep list of controversies and instances of violence, sexual assault, and borderline felonious vandalism, and there are even whole media channels dedicated to championing this type of insanely psychotic behavior! Like, am I taking crazy pills?!
These hazing stories come out every few months now, and the only thing we hear from fraternity members around the country is βwaaaah, pussy, stop complaining, donβt hold us responsible for the bad actions of a fewβ
No, thatβs exactly what we need to do. Unacceptable behavior at fraternities is way too common and even championed, and it makes me utterly sick.
My last straw was watching two Total Frat Move videos of fraternity members purposely vandalizing their house and smashing glass bottles into members faces. And the comments section was full of people cheering that sadistic shit on.
Why the hell does that happen? How have we literally normalized (celebrated!) getting drunk, hard drugs, casual sex, assault, violence, and vandalism in association with an academic institution and our young?! Itβs utterly insane.
Decades ago, in the early 1900's there was a need for these groups for social interaction and in the case of lodges they would provide insurance benefits and other things. Frats and Sororities used to be a brotherhood that mostly provided housing and board for it's members. But now they are useless and serve little purpose other than partying and bailing each other out of the drunk tank. Plus, in case you hadn't noticed, the people in Frats and Sororities are the people with the least social awareness and self awareness you will meet. Yet their little group of drinking buddies from the house has them convinced they are part of the socially elite. Pathetic.
People always talk about βfinding my brothers/sistersβ when they join Greek Life organizations. The idea of joining these groups is that you will find your true friends, but a lot of times you have to pay to join and everyone is selected in a process. I understand that people can make true friends here, but the initial idea is a lot less natural than finding friends by making connections. Instead, you join a group and hope to make friends after. The groups do a lot of partying and occasional charity work, but I also see this as disingenuous. I feel the charity and volunteer work sometimes comes off as self-interested like βvoluntourismβ (where people go to places of poverty and βhelpβ others while posting or sharing about it as a personal achievement for the gratitude of others). I do not mean to offend any groups, I just want to question the value of these groups and potentially help inspire positive change in them. Thank you.
In the middle of a disgusting scandal I realized that so many media sources only talk about sorority and fraternity life to shine negative light on it (hazing, racist chants, etc).
What is something that you know of that happened that deserves to be noticed?
For example: Kent State greeks recently raised $77,000 for the speech and hearing impaired. Where is that on national media?!
