Just a few minutes ago I read this book review on the Slate Star Codex blog. I never actually read the book in question, but the review talks about the ideology of High Modernism. Scott Alexander, the author of the blog, quite unflatteringly describes it at one point as:

Alexander was "shocked [by James Scott, author of the reviewed book's] research into just how strong this ideology was around the turn of the last century". I, however, immediately identified this with my mental portrait of the modern globalist liberal ideology, which I elaborate on here and here. I want to be shown that my mental portrait is actually inaccurate and that liberals don't, in fact, believe in a one size fits all world where "optimal" policies ought to be arrived at via "impartial deliberation". But it seems to me as if that is very much what they believe in; their ideas on trade, immigration, democracy, the role of the nation-state, multinational corporations, and supernational institutions like the EU seem to me like being thoughts of High Modernists.
Quick clarification here: I identify "liberal" not with the political left-wing as a whole but with people and institutions like the Clintons, Micheal Bloomberg, and the Democratic Leadership Council in the US, Tony Blair, New Labour, and the Liberal Democrat party in the UK, Emmanuel Macron in France, nominal conservatives like Mitt Romney and Angela Merkel, and other people and institutions as such. The issue I'm having is properly understanding one of the aspects of Modernism (obtained via a handout he want us to use).
It says that one of the key characteristics of Modernist Writing was "Questions of what constitutes the nature of being". How I originally interpreted the "nature of being" part was the nature of human beings as in what makes us behave the way we do. I then went on to search up this same phrase "nature of being" and read a few things and it made me think it could also mean nature of existence. What I mean by that is it questions why we exist.
If you realized, the nature of human beings and nature of existence are a bit different and can lead me to different places within my essay however I don't know which one is correct.
If you could help me out to find what the true meaning is, that'd be great.
If the cycle path is shite or non existent (as it so often is) I fully get that cyclists use the road, as is their right.
What baffles me is that when there is a good quality dedicated lane that's set back from the road and all in all much safer and they STILL choose to pedal along the busy carriageway. Madness.
When people think about modern and high level play they often think about what deck should be run in what meta. They may think less about interaction. What do I mean about interaction?
I mean fundamentally understanding the cards being played and how they interact with one another optimally. For example, one interaction has won me a number of games against Dryad of the Ilysian Grove. By killing the Dryad after Valakut triggers go on the stack (before they are removed) you can essentially make them check as less than 6 other mountains on resolution. (Assuming the opponent doesn’t have 6 actual other mountains in addition to valakut)
The quintessential example is bolting a ⅔ Tarmogoyf without a prior instant in the yard. (Surprise Tarmogoyf lives as a ¾.)
Lots of these interactions are known by more experienced players as a result of playing the format for years. These interactions often win games of magic.
While a deck is important. Knowing how to make the deck hum is arguably moreso. Knowing inherent weaknesses and what to prioritize removal on is crucial. What are some interactions you are aware of, perhaps not widely known?
A lot of modern staples have fallen out of favor for the past years. Looking back, I've seen a lot of trap staples where it spiked and got kicked out of the meta due to a stronger card being significantly better than it. Some we're pillars of the format but got outdated as the format grew (especially when MH1 and MH2 came out).

I've read that ancient wine was actually pretty poor quality compared to modern standards. We can today reliably produce millions of litres of a brand of wine a year and the quality and taste is basically the same in every bottle or cask. It's clean, stores well, is perfectly fine to drink.
How would this cheap wine today compare to the wine from 3,000 or 2,000 years ago, would our cheap wine today impress a roman emperor who was accustomed to the best wine of his day, or would the best ancient wine actually be quite a lot better than cheap commercially produced wine you can buy anywhere today? And when ancient wine is described as overall bad and difficult to handle, being a paste that needs watering down before drinking, and disguising the natural flavour with additives like herbs and honey, did that apply to the very best wine of back then or was it only the cheap wine?
I'm trying to think about how they can make the game better but I am drawing a blank..
What improvements do you think are incoming? I'm just hoping that they don't try fixing something that isn't broken.
I find these sort of stories specifically fascinating because they seem almost like original fiction, really--taking the same characters but changing nearly everything about their background and interests. But which ones, to you, really work well? Do you just really like Naruto transposed into an everyday high school world, or think the human MLP fics add so much to the characters? What do you love and why?

…talking about the hyperpop-esque sound, Mickey Mouse like, you know and love or hate it. Usually combined with nearly instant autotune.
So far I've rarely found an approach to that which suited my needs, so I'd be happy to hear others pitch in. Clients who're going for that sound have multiplied in the last two years and I assume it's similar for others around here.
Obviously approaches are formant changing and pitching them up. Pitching them up only is viable in a +12 step, as anything else usually breaks the melody and harmonic correlation.
With formant pitching in either Antares Auto-Tune or LittleAlterBoy, I often can't get a sound as clean as I'd like to have, with artifacts all over the place, either from formant-pitching or amplified artifacts of the autotune. The resulting harshness can be kinda trimmed with EQing and anything that dynamically kills resonant peaks (DSEQ, Soothe), artifacts can be kinda fixed with tools like RX, but I find it especially difficult to balance "air" and harshness in that regards. That the tracks of artists that prefer that sound often are recorded on low-budget condensers (NT1A anyone) doesn't help at all.
I feel like I'm missing something obvious, as that sound has been pioneered by people without high quality studios to access, yet I don't seem to be able to recreate it confidently. Clients often are happy, but comparing it to references, I often seem to be lacking clean high-end on the vocals.
Anyone got any inputs or go-to ways to pitch shift vocals? Be really helpful.

edit: I studied in the same Catholic School in Metro Manila for almost 10 years, and, just like many religious institutions my head teacher, let's call him Sir 'O' as in Orange, said in my parent-student-teacher meeting in late 2021 he has once worked & been in a school that grants freedom of learning, a.k.a. school for gifted kids. The Philippine High School for the Arts (PHSA) he mentioned.
Along the lines was 'freedom to learn' as their motto. The ability to reject tradition was valued in their school, essential for future leaders that wish to baguhin ang sistema, change the system, the same values most scholarships look for and basically what sparked changed why Europe and North America are developed nations. They build future leaders that stand from the crowd, if I'm not sure, is the value that most religious institutions/schools reject when a student has that thinking.
My araling panlipunan teacher said that he already had to adjust how he grades me since the first quarter. Sayang ang talento sabi niya. As much as I would want to grade you higher, you have to stick to the standard of the school. "Para kang nagbigay ng cake, hinihingi ko slice lang binigay mo sa'kin buong kahon".
Modules are such a mess. I gave my all to this school (a Catholic School in Quezon City) yet it just feels like my efforts to just help this country are censored. I mean this in the nicest way possible, its like teachers here in the Philippines put the students who stood out from the crowd down on purpose. Its a strong generalization but its making the country become stagnated, parang kung sino dapat ang nagpapaangat ng bansa natin sila pa yung pumipigil na tayo ay maging developed tbh.

okay, so it has been talked about more now than ever about the many things happening to the popular and much-loved game royale high, made by callmehbob and a very talented group of developers...or so we thought. dont get me wrong, the quality of the game itself is absolutely amazing, but its the little things lying deep inside it that can sometimes go unnoticed. back in the day, this game used to be fun and a happy place for all players, especially young ones, who have grown with the game and were the first to talk about this. in 2019, lizzy_winkle (god bless), an extremely skilled member of the rh team, passed away at the hands of leukemia, and this was very significant, as ever since that period of time, and since they had lost a big asset, things started escalating. i will now speak about some of the things that are quite wrong with this game.
-people have complained about callmehbob, who goes by nightbarbie on twitter, just treating them like total wallets, which is true. every major holiday, the team bring out updates, which usually come with a new set or two. if you're unfamiliar with the game, sets are collectible items, usually bodices, skirts, heels and accessories, which come together to make an outfit. these are extremely overpriced, the most recent one costing 198k diamonds (in game currency). this takes days of farming which literally nobody has the time or capacity for, and not to mention how if you want more diamonds you have to pay stupid amounts of robux, may it be the gamepasses or just diamond purchases. this isnt just about clothes, because its like all the good things need to be payed for - the little amount of lgbtq representation requires a robux payment, and even then its just a wearable texture or a hair colour featuring the colours of pride flags.
-the lack of diversity and racism within the game does shine through now more than ever, in many ways. firstly, you have to pay (again) for any good masculine clothes, as the free hairs and such dont exactly look brilliant. the feminine clothes and hairs are plentiful, not to mention the faces, but for a boy or anyone else masculine leaning will get a nasty shock when trying to dress up. back to the sets, there isnt a single plus size set, all the sets are just skinny bodies, seemingly perfect which isnt the best example for younger players. take the new gothicutie set; the legs are like string! as well as this, there isn't anything that people can use to show their origins, and t
