My partner(F) and I(M) are considering choosing a brand new surname when we get married, instead of one of us taking the other's. How do you choose a brand new name?

It seemed obvious when I proposed that she would take my surname, but the more i thought about it, the weirder it seemed. Her family is tighter than mine and her name means more to her than mine does to me. My name is long and kinda awkward, and I dont really place too much emphasis on legacy. I also dont like the idea of doing something just because its tradition. And why would i ask her to do something that im not willing to do myself? Instead of not asking her, i decided to become willing. So i thought what if i took her name? what if we hyphenated? what if we started something new and picked a brand new surname?

That begs the question; where do you start?
Do we just pick something that sounds cool? Do we pick something that means something to us both? or do we pluck an existing name out of the ether? how do we pick something unique without coming off as complete wankers?

I suppose the question im asking here is; If you were to choose a brand new surname, what kind of things would you take into consideration?

Change of surname after marriage and related issues

Hi,

I didn't take my husband's surname after marriage. We have a marriage certificate and even my passport lists him as my husband. Of the ~4 years being married, we never faced any issues until now.

The thing is I'm pregnant and due to the lockdown I didn't visit my regular clinic for sonography. At The current clinic, the doctor is using my father's name in the form instead of husband's because apparently in Maharashtra different surnames for husband and wife leads to problems during form verification. She suggested that we should also inquire about this for medical claims and birth certificate as these might be a problem there.

The question is, has anyone here faced issues in medical dealings due to different surnames? How can we prepare for any upcoming issues?

I'm friends on facebook with two lesbian women that planned on getting married and their shared surname was going to be, get this...Seaman. Pronounced like semen. And none of my friends seemed to find the same humorous irony in that.

Like here it is, these two women are engaged, right? And one of them has the last name Seaman, which is pronounced exactly like semen, the material produced by male sex organs. And yet there is no semen in their relationship, obviously. And if they got married, both of their last names would share this ironic pronunciation.

I told this to numerous people and nobody seemed to see the same brilliance in it that I did. I think they might have split up and I'm really disappointed because there was going to be something heartwarming about knowing that at any time in my life, somewhere out there are two women married to one another that decided to go with the last name that sounds like semen.

Spelling Variations of Irish Surnames

I create surname maps for surnames listed in the 1901 and 1911 censuses of Ireland. For each surname on my website I now list the 250 surnames that have the closest spelling to that surname.

For example, for Sullivan I have:

OSullivan (4213), O'Sullivan (2375), O Sullivan (723), Osullivan (55), O' Sullivan (33), Sullivane (7) and so on.

The number in brackets are the number with this surname in 1901.

This might help when looking for alternative spellings for your surname.

Can anyone help me figure out the origins of an old Czech surname?

Hello everyone! I've been wondering for most of my life where my last name originated from and what it actually means. I've pretty much been unable to find any information whatsoever and so I figured that I'd ask for help. I know that I'm a descendant from Czech immigrants, and I traced records of my last name, Ostrihon, back to around the late 17th century, all in the areas around Czechia, Slovakia, and Hungary.

I read that Ost- essentially means East and that makes sense. However, I can't recall where Ost- was most commonly used. But the last part of my name is what's really stumping me, because it doesn't really seem to fit in anywhere at all linguistically speaking.

Anyways, I'd appreciate any help I can get!

Approach to get telephone numbers from surnames in a particular province of Spain

Hi,

I am looking for a way to search for telephone numbers based on surname(s) in a determined province of Spain.

So for example, I would like to search for all people surnamed "SΓ‘nchez" in the province of "Murcia", and output their telephone numbers. This seems like a marketing campaign but it's far from that. I would like to release an open source software with it.

This would be an web-based service, without databases, due to GDPR. A tool to check if numbers exist in any social network. This is already been done (and inspired by) at http://blancas.paginasamarillas.es/, but people need to actively upload their info there. So the number of results is far from what I am expecting to see.

I have found a spanish software here: https://github.com/Quantika14/osint-suite-tools, and it is currently not working, but I can see some interesting ideas. It is even trying to get some info from InfoJobs, a spanish-like LinkedIn, brilliant idea.

I already created an open source app that extracts data from the Spanish' Institute of National Statistics: https://github.com/DrumSergio/secciones-nacionalidades, but it just outputs demography data based on nationality (It partly addresses what I am trying to achieve). So I was aiming to deepen into this idea of the surnames and telephones.

I also was interested in Facebook, but it seems nearly impossible right now after all the changes it made to the graph API. I want to build something free too, so I don't know which other services would expose something as private as a telephone number, with a (free) high API limit, but for sure you have more ideas about it. Maybe what I am seeking is a little bit impossible now, every other tool I find is mainly focused on discovering companies' services and employees, pure traditional OSINT. This little area of OSINT and SOCMINT is not as exploited nor addressed as traditional OSINT, so I can not get more info about it on the net. In addition, I am not even an expert in the area, so that is why I am posting this today.

Please, share your ideas. Have a nice day and take care.

What is your language's equivalent of "name" and "last name/surname" and do they translate in a literal translation in English?

Hello people,

So, when I started learning English years ago, the way they write about their names confused me, because it is the reverse of what we do in French :

  • the name in French is called "prΓ©nom", which translates as "prename", prΓ©/pre being a prefix meaning before, in front of.

  • the last name/surname in French is "nom", which translates to : name.

So, as example, with the French naming system, Boris Johnson : Johnson would be what we consider his name, while Boris would be what comes before, what close people would call him, the distinguisher, what we call prename.
