What distinguishes these categories?
Some common criteria include:
- Complexity. Soft sciences tend to deal with complex systems with many interacting parts. It is easier to isolate and test a single variable in the hard sciences.
- Observation vs Experiment. Hard sciences tend to deal with subjects that can be experimented on. Soft sciences rely more on observation because experiments are either impractical or unethical.
- Mathematical rigor. Hard sciences rely more extensively on math and can more easily use rigorous proofs. This is often associated with have stricter standards for discoveries.
- Age. Soft sciences are typically younger than hard sciences.

By bare-ish I mean there are single soft fescue grass plants at least an inch apart, sometimes three inches apart. Super thin. It wasn't warm enough in the shade to germinate much.
The trees will have lost their leaves by spring so those areas will be more sunny of course.
There's no way I'll want to hand pick or hand-glyphosate all those weeds and I wouldn't be able to get the roots anyway so it needs to be chemical.
I feel like life is really tricky in this era.. lots of needs never enough to make do. Recently had a friend who killed himself. No suicide notes no goodbye. but in our last convo he was talking about how managing the daily struggles had become difficult. sat in the funeral three days ago and all the old men were lamenting of how soft we are.. haven't been able to stop thinking about it since.
