Judge grants relief to Navy SEALs who refused coronavirus vaccine, sued Biden administration Dan Lamothe9:01 p.m. EST
A federal judge granted a preliminary injunction on Monday blocking the Defense Department from taking action against a group of 35 Navy sailors who had refused to get a coronavirus vaccine, raising questions on how it might shape the Pentagonβs requirement that all U.S. troops get vaccinated.
U.S. District Judge Reed OβConnor found that the pandemic βprovides the government with no license to abrogateβ the freedoms that any American has, and that the service members had a right to avoid getting a vaccine on religious grounds.
βThis Court does not make light of COVID-19β²s impact on the military. Collectively, our armed forces have lost over 80 lives to COVID-19 over the course of the pandemic,β OβConnor wrote Monday in a 26-page order.
But the judge added that the βloss of religious liberties outweighs any forthcoming harm to the Navy,β and that βeven the direst circumstances cannot justify the loss of constitutional rights.β
Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said Monday night that defense officials were aware of the injunction and reviewing it.
The troops β a group that included Navy SEALs and other members of Naval Special Warfare Command β filed suit against President Biden, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro and the Defense Department to challenge the Navyβs vaccination requirement in November. They cited Christian beliefs that they should not take a vaccine developed from aborted fetal cell lines and saw a modification of their bodies as an βaffront to their Creator.β Many Christians have sought vaccination, with Pope Francis urging Catholics to do so on humanitarian grounds.
The suit was filed by First Liberty Institute, a nonprofit that specializes in defending religious liberty. Michael Berry, a lawyer for the institute, said in a phone interview that the ruling βsends a clear message to the Biden administration, to the Pentagon and to the Navy that our service members do not give up their religious freedom when they serve their country.β
Should the Biden administration appeal the decision, Berry said, βwe will defend this as far as it needs to go.β
OβConnor noted that the Navy has a process by which service members can seek a religious accommodation to avoid vaccination, but said that βby all ac
... keep reading on reddit β‘I remember in my house when the Amy Grant scandal broke. She was one of my favourites that I was allowed to listen to, without having it censored. I could play the whole record (lol). After her divorce all of a sudden, we were no longer allowed to listen to her, as she became a βcorrupting influenceβ.
With the recent release of the Pullman episode, I'd definitely love to hear Robert do maybe a two or three parter on the absolute deluge of scandals out of the Grant administration.
You've got all the hallmarks of a good bastard episode, from your ethnic genocides of the Lakota for their natural resources, to the grift that helped enable the Black Friday gold panic that almost crashed the US economically, to the President's personal secretary hiring someone to blow open a safe in the pursuit of framing a prosecutor for being involved in a construction racket, to the only Cabinet member in any administration to ever have impeachment charges be brought against them (as well as being the only person to have their impeachment trial to continue after their resignation).
And that's not even touching the rampant nepotism that caused Charles Sumner (most well known for nearly being beaten to death by another Congressional Representative in the chambers of Congress) to coin the term 'Grantism', due to the literal dozens of close family and friends in Grant's administration. Hell for an added bonus, he could even slip in the CrΓ©dit Mobilier scandal, a grift so blatantly stupid that private stocks in a fake company were very openly sold on the floor of the House and the Senate. While that one wasn't technically Grant's fault, the fallout occurred during his term.
RRF folks, any info for this ?? Just saw it....
