Doing a simple undergrad project on the morphology of pollen grains of local flowering plants. What do I need to know?

I'm currently in the first year of my Bachelor of Science degree with Chemistry, botany and zoology majors. I'm really new to projects and trying to find my way. What are some things that I need to know before starting? Any and all advice appreciated. Thanks!

The glossary in the wiki is out of date. I took the liberty of drafting a new one. Let me know what you think!

ABS - A type of plastic that is widely said to be inferior to PBT, yet still inexplicably used in the most expensive keycaps.

Actuation Force - A term made up by keyboard enthusiasts because "stiffness" sounds too sexual.

Alphas - Letter and punctuation keys. Nothing to do with alpha males ... like everything else in this hobby.

Bottoming Out - Pushing a key all the way down. Not to be confused with 'Hitting Rock Bottom', which is having a nervous breakdown at 11:23pm on Sunday evening after realising in the final moments of your 'endgame' build that your $280 keycaps are not compatible with your $640 keyboard because for some reason it features a 1.33u right shift key.

Build Stream - A great way for beginners to watch an expert build a keyboard. This primarily serves to allow them to develop a false sense of confidence in their own abilities, which will inevitably come crashing back down to Earth about 75 minutes into their first build when they realise (after soldering) that one of their stabiliser wires is installed backwards.

Butter / Buttery - Smooth. These words literally just mean smooth. Why not say 'silky smooth' like the entire rest of the English-speaking world? Well, because everything in this hobby is food-related - probably because those who partake in it can't afford to eat every night. ^^Seriously ^^if ^^you ^^have ^^food ^^I ^^will ^^lube ^^your ^^switches ^^in ^^exchange ^^for ^^sandwiches.

Caps Lock - The worst key on a keyboard. It's most useful function is the ability to turn itself off.

Case - Opera singers have The Sydney Opera House. Artists have The Louvre. Hirose Oranges have the KeyCult No. 2/65 Black and Brass Edition. It's basically an $800 metal box that stops your PCB from scratching your desk's surface, but if that idea irks you then this ain't the hobby for you, mate!

Clack - The noise a keyboard makes. The only noise. All other noises are derivations of 'clack'.

Cleck - The noise a keyboard makes in New Zealand. ( Ν‘Β° ΝœΚ– Ν‘Β°)

Click - What your mouse does.

Clock - Something to stare wistfully at while waiting for your group buy to arrive.

Cluck - Noise made by a chicken. No clear connection to mechanical keyboards. Included here for the sake of completeness. Sample (lubed and filmed).

Clicky Switch - The perfect switch for people who hate it when their co-workers don't glare at them from across the offic

Glossary of Netrunner Slang

Hi,

in a recent discussion I stumbled across an old post in this subreddit explaining various terms from the game. Unfortunately that post was limited, due to age and several important terms were missing.

I have set up a new version of a glossary as a Google doc. Any suggestions or corrections would be very much appreciated.

Rapid modulation of spine morphology by the 5-HT2A serotonin receptor through kalirin-7 signaling

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2780750/

The 5-HT2A serotonin receptor is the most abundant serotonin receptor subtype in the cortex and is predominantly expressed in pyramidal neurons. The 5-HT2A receptor is a target of several hallucinogens, antipsychotics, anxiolytics, and antidepressants, and it has been associated with several psychiatric disorders, conditions that are also associated with aberrations in dendritic spine morphogenesis. However, the role of 5-HT2A receptors in regulating dendritic spine morphogenesis in cortical neurons is unknown.

Here we show that the 5-HT2A receptor is present in a subset of spines, in addition to dendritic shafts. It colocalizes with PSD-95 and with multiple PDZ protein-1 (MUPP1) in a subset of dendritic spines of rat cortical pyramidal neurons.

MUPP1 is enriched in postsynaptic density (PSD) fractions, is targeted to spines in pyramidal neurons, and enhances the localization of 5-HT2A receptors to the cell periphery. 5-HT2A receptor activation by the 5-HT2 receptor agonist DOI induced a transient increase in dendritic spine size, as well as phosphorylation of p21-activated kinase (PAK) in cultured cortical neurons. PAK is a downstream target of the neuronal Rac guanine nucleotide exchange factor (RacGEF) kalirin-7 that is important for spine remodeling.

Kalirin-7 regulates dendritic spine morphogenesis in neurons but its role in neuromodulator signaling has not been investigated. We show that peptide interference that prevents the localization of kalirin-7 to the postsynaptic density disrupts DOI-induced PAK phosphorylation and spine morphogenesis.

These results suggest a potential role for serotonin signaling in modulating spine morphology and kalirin-7's function at cortical synapses.
