A list of puns related to "Gallium nitride"
Title says it all
Currently Tesla integrates 16.5 kW AC chargers in their vehicles. This year GaN chargers started to become commercially available for phones and laptops, mostly in the form of USB Type-C chargers. Gallium Nitride has as wider band gap of 3.4 eV, which is about 3 times as wide as the 1.12 eV that Silicon provides. This wider band gap enables higher electron mobility and can maintain this at a wider temperature range (see Varshni's empirical expression).
Very theoretical stuff, but it can result in higher efficiency power conversion in a way smaller package. This could make the on-board AC charger both more efficient and smaller, or increase it's power. It could also enable the AC-socket in the Cybertruck and fast USB ports inside the vehicle. Even regenerative breaking could potentially become more efficient (but I don't know if power conversion is needed there at all).
I hope to hear more about GaN tech inside Tesla on their Battery and Powertrain Investor Day early 2020. If you will be there, please ask questions about this exciting tech!
