I read this book around 2010. From the cover I think it was written in the 80s/90's. I may have read it in my middle school library but unsure.
The book is a teen/YA book set in the late 1800's. I believe the main character was a teenage girl named Abigail/Abby. She is sailing away from her home with her family because they are moving. Her friend (Jonathan?), a young man from a poor (abusive?) home was sad that she was leaving. After being on the ship she discovers that he has stowed away and is hiding on a lifeboat. She brings him food and things for a while. Then during a storm the life boat is tossed overboard? She and him find their way to an island. I believe it is one of the Hawaiian islands. The people there help them. I remember a scene where they both try Poi. A priest also helps them try to get to where they need to go but there's some violence/mutiny from rough sailors. In the end it turns out okay.
I think it was a Christian book because I remember Abby praying to God to help them and it's very clean. I don't even think the two teenagers kiss throughout the whole adventure. It was a relatively short little novel. Any help is appreciated! I recently thought about this book and cannot for the life of me get the idea of it out of my head.
