Does anybody have an idea of the date or maker of this double inkwell? I inherited it from my very Irish mother-in-law and I'd love to know more about it it seems to be very old but I'm not quite sure where it's from or when I believe it was her mother is that would put it somewhere early 1900s.

AITA for leaving early from Thanksgiving with my in-laws because I did not want to watch the movie Love Actually?

There’s a tradition at my in-laws that we all sit down and watch a Christmas movie after lunch is over and we bring out the tree and everything. It’s usually a lot of fun and after the movie people leave or sleep over or whatever. I’ll say that historically my SIL is REALLY big on β€œtradition” and makes a BIG deal about if things are β€œdifferent” or if people try to back out. There’s a reason for it but it’s irrelevant imo.

WELLLLL some context is that I found out my husband had been cheating on me earlier in the year. We’re in therapy and working through a lot of stuff, we’re staying together. It doesn’t mean I’m healed, I still have a lot to go. But I’m working on it.

The movie that my SIL picked this year was Love Actually, which is a family favorite.

I asked if we could maybe watch something else because we’ve watched it a few times. It was shot down, which is totally fine! I don’t get to ruin everyone else’s time.

I pulled my husband aside and said β€œHey I think I’m going to take off, do you mind?” He asked me to just stay and that maybe I can go to the bathroom or something during β€œthose scenes” but I said no, I am not going to feel comfortable. He accepted it, and said that he wanted to stay to spend time with his family.

When I got back inside I said that I wasn’t feeling great and was going to head back home and come pick up my husband tomorrow morning. Everyone kept asking me to stay and my SIL was like β€œIs it because we won’t watch a different movie?”

I said no, I just wasn’t feeling great, and got my things and left. When I got home I polished off a bottle of wine and watched Gossip Girl for a few hours and just calmed down and relaxed.

SIL texted asking me if everything was ok, I said yeah, feeling a bit better, and she wrote this whole thing about how she gets that it’s boring to watch the same movies over and over again but that my husband was obviously upset that I’d just left him there and how it was awkward and uncomfortable that I just abandoned him.

I just responded β€œI’ll keep that in mind” and she kept going on with β€œAre you going to pull the same thing if we watch Rudolph with the kids on Christmas?”

I didn’t respond to her and now I feel like maybe I didn’t handle this well. I thought that if I stayed there even if I left the room during β€œthose scenes” I’d know they were coming and fixate on it. Like I said we’re working on it but the triggers are still triggers and I didn’t want to make a spectacle of myself.

AITA? Should

Authoritarianism and Irish Nationalism in the Early Twentieth Century?

I'm currently reading the excellent "Architects of the Resurrection; AltirΓ na hAisΓ©irghe and the Fascist new order in Ireland" which documents the Irish Fascist group, Architects of the Resurrection and the conditions that existed prior to their emergence. This book is absolutely brilliant and demonstrates that Irish liberal democracy was not pinned down (as we tend to assume it was) in the eyes of the people and there were anti democratic undercurrents in Irish society. However, I have one question that the book cannot answer (it only covers from 1919-39 in the first chapters): was Fenianism/Republicanism against liberal democracy prior to 1919-21? I've heard brief indications but nothing solid. Irish Nationalism of the sort espoused by Patrick Pearse always vaguely reminded me of Pan Germanism and Folkism in regards to rhetoric (I could easily imagine Pearse saying "Blood and Soil" if the land issue was still going as strong as it was in Parnell's time).

Irish work laws

Hey lads, having a hell of a time at my work place, employees up and quitting. People claiming bullying etc so I've started being more vigilant at what is and isn't allowed by the management, that led to this question.

I'm a flexible worker who has a far distance to travel to work. My manager never gives me the hours stated in my contract despite them being essential to me being able to live my life outside work due to the travelling and on top of that he's threatening me with more days than I'm contracted for over Christmas without asking me because he doesn't want the hassle of asking others.

On top of that he talks shit about all the employees behind their backs and openly shows favourites as in one case he literally told an employee he'd never be kind to her again because she wouldn't fall in line with his ridiculous rules.

The most irritating thing is he never posts the roster for my work week until literal hours before the shift starts, aka a Sunday evening or 12 at night on a Saturday.

Is there anything I can do? Is any of this huge red flags to anyone else? I don't know if I'm the issue or if this place really is the pit of hell.

Did Law Enforcement Give Us Huge Clues Early On?

In a March 8, 2017 article by Alexis McAdams she asked some poignant questions to Doug Carter.

Indiana State Police Superintendent Dour Carter says they have several pieces and parts but that they are looking for the one piece of "evidence" that will crack the case. "I know, we have the human element and we have a very solid science element" he said. "We are using every capable process that we have from a scientific perspective as everyone would expect us to and we will continue to do that until there is nothing left to do. He is asked by the reporter, "does that include DNA?" he answers "It does". We have not ruled out that it is a local person. Every time we clear someone it gets us closer. We are confident that somewhere in the tips, we have valuable information and every time we can eliminate one, we can move on to the next.

Because of the new information we have learned over the past two weeks, we can look at these answers differently in my opinion. Notice how he says they have the human element and a very solid science element, this was only 23 days after Abby and Libby were murdered. Is he telling us here they are confident in who may have done this crime? Because he only mentions, they need one piece of evidence to crack the case. He does not say we need a suspect. We know that in 2019, he also tells us they were on to something in the very beginning, and that the killer did not think they would go back to it, but that they have. He speaks very clearly in the 2019 press conference to the killer.

So what would the solid science element that they have? I think it could be many things, but given recent events, I might say, fibers, hair possibly dog, fingerprints, and DNA.

I highly suggest everyone go back and watch the 2-22-17 press conference. There are some very telling questions that were asked by the media to Law Enforcement that day. Captain Berston with the Indiana State Police answers most with the FBI Agent in charge answers one. When you watch the press conference pay close attention to Sgt. Jerry Holeman's body language and Sean Evens during these question and answers. It is obvious that they both are uncomfortable and nervous with some of the answers that Berston is giving. I have broken down the questions and answers for you here, but it is worth watching just to see the dynamic from everyone on stage.

Question 1: Was the suspect local or just passing through?

Answer: No um yes it could be a stranger or it could be

[TOMT][MOVIE][2000s] Early 00s Irish/British kids environmental made-for-TV(?) film/show featuring alien/robot

Something that I have vague memories watching while I was at primary school in Northern Ireland circa 2002-2003. The film takes place in a seaside town, primarily at the beach, where a group of kids some sort of alien/robot that has came to earth to warn people about the dangers of pollution. I think there was a villain who was trying to capture the alien who owned a factory that was dumping stuff into the sea. Entire thing was live action, likely low budget made-for-tv affair. Although I saw it in 02/03 it could possibly be from the 90s or even 80s, doubt any earlier than that.

Gender equality in Irish or European family law?

My fear is that I seem to be endlessly told, even by solicitors and barristers, not to expect equality as a father in the Irish family law courts.

Are there any specific examples of legislation or precedent in either Irish or European law which grant men the right to expect to be granted the same entitlements as women, primarily with regard to access to their children?

Is it inadvisable to go to court repeatedly pushing for and stating the expectation that I get "fair and equal"?
