Desktop Window Manager (dwm.exe) using SO MUCH of GPU, is that normal?

To cut things short, Desktop Window Manager is using around 65-70% of my GPU when all I have open is general stuff like Discord, Chrome, Spotify. It should *not* be using this much, to my knowledge anyway. GPU is NVIDIA RTX 3070, CPU is Ryzen 5 5600X if that matters too.

Is this a sign of something wrong or is it just like this and I'm being ignorant to the knowledge of that?

[Help Needed] I want to run Window Manager without any Desktop Environment.

Reason(s):

  1. Want to customize my desktop looks to my liking.
  2. Want to learn more about tweaking stuff in Linux.

Conditions:

  1. The WM should offer both tiling and stacking layout options.
  2. The WM should be highly customisable.
  3. The WM should be stable enough and have decent docs.

Currently considering AwesomeWM. Nothing for or against any WM, people. Just wanted to try something which checks my condition(s).

Doubts:

  1. Awesome is for Xorg (I believe). I don't want to use Xorg as I read that Xorg doesn't isolate its clients/programs and also it's relatively slower than Wayland. Is there any way around? Any alternative WM for Wayland (not Sway since it's only offers tiling, I think)?

  2. Whether or not I must use Xorg for such WM, how should I setup it (without any DE, of course) on my Fedora minimal? I believe starting with minimal will be helpful for better understanding.

Disclaimer: I'm comfortable with programming. Hence I can pick up any language required. I am also willing to spend some time required initially or regularly.

Thank you for your time.

Difference between windows manager and desktop environment?

I've recently installed arch linux and these two terms have popped up repeatedly. I've read a bit on both of these things and I've even understood a lot about DEs but I still don't understand where does WM fit in.

If I install a WM then do I have to install a DE or is it a standalone program? Also, what does a WM offer that a DE can't offer? And can I install more than 1 WM on my machine just like DEs?

Performance Help: Desktop Window Manager

Hello all!

So it feels recent, but I've been getting some pretty bad hitching when gaming, and I've boiled it down to games utilizing DWM instead of doing the graphical processing through the game its self...

I'm wondering if anyone on this sub knows how to disable this, or force my games through GeForce to use their own processing instead of DWM?
It would be fine if it was using DWM, AND processing through its own means, but its solely using DWM, and only ever using 0.1% of its own processing with my GPU (2080Super)

Division of processes.... Why???

Im really wanting to fix this, most of my free time is spent gaming, and its super annoying getting hitching. My main game right now is for honor, with 400ms light attacks, and having 40 of those 400 not load in due to hitching is making me aggravated.

Notable Specs:
i9-9900k
32GB DDR4 3200k
GTX 2080 Super

My entire system is water cooled, so heating is not the issue (around 85C GPU)

I've used Malwarebytes to check my system for any malware, there was none that would affect any performance....

Any help is GREATLY appreciated

High CPU Usage Of Desktop Window Manager (dwm.exe) on Windows 11. (HELP)

HI. For quite some time i am having a very weird issue with my pc on windows 11 where the cpu usage of desktop window manager (dwm.exe) shoots up (10-20%) whenever i move my mouse.
I have tried all of the steps on my end. Clean install graphics driver, reseat my gpu (rx 580) ,change cables, clean mouse sensor, clean mousepad etc. Nothing helps.
I have done a bit research on it on the internet and it points to an issue with the graphics driver and also that intel has recently released a graphics driver update for their gpu's which solves this issue.
I wanted to know how to fix this issue as this causes a lot of stuttering in games and causes incorrect aim. If this is indeed a graphics driver issue then does the amd team know about it? and how long do i have to wait for it's fix?
Thanks

Is there anyone who use a window manager instead of a desktop environment on their primary machine? (On arch)

I have been using Ubuntu for over a year now, and Im seriously considering to switch over to Arch. But I have never tried so I don’t know what exactly a Window Manager is. I’ve heard about it and read about it here and there on reddit and elsewhere.

Would you recommend me installing a window manager rather than a Desktop environment? I am a tech savvy person, and the primary reason I am moving from Ubuntu (GNOME) to Arch (KDE) is because of the amount of customization available and the clean out-of-the-box installation for Arch.

Any advice?

What part of a desktop environment distinguishes itself from "display server + window manager"?

A desktop environment consists of a set of applications. Many applications in a DE are not essential part of the DE.

Conceptually what is/are the applications in a DE that are essential to the DE and distinguishes it from "display server + window manager"? Is it a display manager, a session manager, a graphical shell, or, ...?

What at minimal does a "display server + window manager" miss that could have made it into a DE?

Thanks.

How do I force the Desktop Window Manager to use my much better GPU?

I've tried to figure this out for months and months now. My laptop has two GPUs. The crappy GPU (Intel UHD), and the real GPU (Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650).

What really annoys me, is that after a few days of using the system, just browsing around, watching videos, doing my work, Windows Explorer starts to get unstable. I assume this is because it's running out of memory on the Intel UHD. So then after a while, Windows Explorer just crashes and restarts itself.

The programs that were running don't close. I don't lose my work, but everything gets rearranged and shuffled around in the taskbar. And I have to reopen all the folders I was browsing.

It's annoying and I'm sick of going through this cycle over and over again. I thought this would have been fixed by now after so many months of me running Windows 10.

I know for sure, this problem wouldn't be happening if the Desktop Window Manager was using my GeForce card, but Windows won't allow it. Why? Why is this?

In the Graphics settings, I have dwm.exe set to use "High performance" which is my GeForce card. But I can clearly see in the Task Manager, it's using GPU 0, which is the Intel UHD. GPU 1 is my GeForce.

Desktop Window Manager is always crashing!

Hello folks!

I've been having this issue for almost a year now and I'm totally lost on how to fix it!

My computer has been unstable for over a year now and I feel like the problem is slowly starting to become more repeatable that it might be able to be diagnosed? I'll get right into the errors.

Whenever I launch a game, there's a high likelihood that the screens will go black and the computer will stop responding, if the GPU fans are plugged in (they're usually not as this build is usually watercooled) They will start spinning up to max speed). Audio continues to play, discord calls continue to function, and oddly enough sometimes I can still log in with Chrome Remote Desktop and see the desktop still sorta functioning. All keyboard and mouse input stops working too. The only way out is to use the power button to try and shut down the computer, if it doesn't respond, I have to press and hold the power button to force a shut down.

This happens in Apex Legends, a few seconds after entering the main menu, it consistently happens when I try to launch Halo Infinite (I've never seen the menu load at all before) and this also happens from time to time randomly while I'm working in Premiere or After Effects.

This has also followed my computer on a Windows 10 install, a Win11 install, a clean reinstall of windows 10 (it goes away for a while after a clean reinstall but comes back within like a week or so sometimes sooner). I've had installs of windows on different SSDs, stored the games I run on different HDD's and SSD's, I've run DDU and reinstalled drivers and Windows 10 countless times. I've even switched out my motherboard and CPU. I've tested my RAM a few times now, and checked SSD and HDD health. Idk if this is some sort of a hardware issue with my GPU?

I'm totally lost here haha does any of this sound familiar to y'all? Dumping specific specs and crash scenarios below, lemme know if I should upload any logs from Reliability History or Event Viewer.

Here are the current specs of the PC:

  • CPU: Ryzen 3800X (Previously Intel 8600K) (like 1 month old) (Not overclocked now)
  • GPU: 2080 Super (Galax 1-click OC) (Just over 2 years old) (Not overclocked now - should I increase it's operating voltage/lower it's clock speed or something to make it more stable?)
  • RAM: 32 GB (4x8GB) Corsair DDR4 3000MHz (2 are about 4 years old, 2 are about 1 year old)
  • MOTHERBOARD: Asus ROG X570-E Motherboard (Previously Asus ROG Maximus X Hero) (about 1 mont

I mean there are plenty of DEs for the traditional floating window managers but there aren't any tiling DEs who are really popular and it's kinda strange. I mean tiling window manager is a thing that is special only for linux and why a person who is not that linux savvy but wants to use this amazing feature will need to settle on a distro flavor or a floating DE it's kinda strange

Semi-Unpopular Opinion: distro doesn't matter, only window manager/ desktop manager does

99% of what any person does on a computer is the same shit for 90 percent of users. You open text editors, web browser, and occasionally game. This is a bit different for developers, but even they mostly use the same software. Even winbloat can do these things. What actually makes a difference in your life is not the distro you use. I'm saying this as a person that uses arch btw after starting with ubuntu, and it really doesn't change that much of my life. Your almost never gonna need the newest software, unless you want to feel superior about seeing pacman get a ten percent speed improvement(although pacman/aur makes arch elite). What really changed anything was changing from plasma to xfce to eventually achieving nirvana with i3. i3 has changed my entire workflow, instincts while typing, and everything in just the month I've had it. Not saying i3 or tiling managers are the best for everyone, but for the vast majority of desktop users, what dm/wm someone uses will have a larger impact on their life then the relatively less radical changes between different distros.

Edit: Most commenters are right package managers are one thing that makes distros very important
