Some dental schools I’m interested in they offer to drop your lowest academic year when calculating your gpa. I’m anticipating to complete my degree by the fall semester of fourth year. I was wondering if I’m eligible to drop my lowest academic year because my fourth year isn’t a full academic year.

I emailed the universities I am interested in as well and just waiting for a response. I was just wondering what input others have

Edit: I forgot to mention they only offer to drop your lowest academic year if you have completed a 4 year degree

my bf (23M) who graduated university last year, is almost like shaming me in a way. I am a dental assistant working my degree into hygiene and speech pathology. I am so excited that I have friends and family that support me (22F).

My boyfriend, he is good in some ways and some days he likes to brag all about himself and how great his job is making 60k at 23. Bragging about how he makes more than all of his friends who work at low end jobs, shaming uber drivers, and most of all, shaming poor people that live in apartments. Funny thing is, he lived in an apartment with his mom when he was younger, overall, I am not jealous about his achievements, of course I am proud of him! but, sometimes in a way, he makes me feel so bad about myself because he will say it out loud to me, "wait so babe, technically you are not in college or university because you are working as a dental assistant and going to a program for hygiene." I defended myself saying, "Actually babe, I take 2 science courses right now to go into the program I want to go into because it is my passion ever since high school." Mind you all, I go to community college, and he is so ashamed that I go to one because he thinks I have no fun in my life. Honestly though, I do have my fun everyday. I do not have to deal with student debt, not deal with parties as much, get to focus on my school more, and more job opportunities for me. As I mention more on how I grew differently with my path carer and school, and how I am graduating with a science degree in community college next semester, he goes, "Oh so you are just getting a certificate...Not a bachelors...Okay..." I got so embarrassed because I do not want to think of myself as a loser when I am not. I have been through so much and still have been into school and just had a tough childhood. My other goal of course is to be in university and pursue a degree in speech pathology to help children who need it. But I need help at this very moment. Redditors please tell me what can I do in this situation? Like I said, I am happy that I have 2 great best friends that support me so much and my family that want the best for me. Thank you all so much. By the way, I have been with him for 2 months now.

Seek Masters degree in Dental Hygiene?

I’m closing in on completing my Bachelors in Dental Hygiene BASDH and I’m having mixed feelings about continuing and seeking a masters degree. I have a 5 year old and I’m interested in having another child in the next couple years so I’m trying to decide if I should go straight into a masters program or if it’s not really worth it financially. Maybe I should just take my bachelors and focus on growing my family. Any advice or shared personal experience would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Applying to Dental School with a degree in applied chemistry

A bit of background: I just recently graduated undergrad with a degree in applied chemistry. Sadly due to my lack of ambition during my first two years of undergrad my current GPA is a 3.2 (3.1 in science). However, there has been a drastic upward trajectory in grades since then. During my first two years of undergrad, I completed 8 credit hours of biology courses; however I only received above a C in 4 of those credit hours. I have all the proper pre requisites classes for dental school apart from biology classes, statistics, and English classes.

My current plan:

This spring semester: Spend this semester studying for the DAT, and take it during July. I also plan to concurrently shadow dentists, and get some volunteering hours under my belt. I'll start my application process after I get my DAT test score.

The following fall and spring semesters: I'm planning on taking at least 18 additional credit hours of biology courses, including anatomy, physiology, their corresponding labs, and 4 other biology classes depending on which university I get these credits from (I'll be enrolled as a non-degree seeking student). I also plan on taking 6 credit hours of english classes, and 3 credit hours of statistics.

During the summers: I'll be working some job in the chemistry industry.

If I get excellent grades, I can bring my GPA up to a 3.37 assuming I get all 4.0s. This is unlikely, but I can certainly get my GPA up to a 3.3.

Edit: I think it's worth mentioning that most dental school programs require 6 credit hours of general chemistry. However, the university I attended for undergrad only offered 1 compacted general chemistry class (it was a pain in the rear-end since the class essentially covered two semesters of material in one). I know that I know the material, I've taken more than my fair share of physical chemistry. I'm wondering if the lack of additional general chemistry credit hours will hinder me in my application process. Any insight into this will be much appreciated as well.

If you graduated with a degree unrelated to dentistry, what would the steps be for applying to dental school?

I have a degree in business but have had a change of heart in what I want to do.

I never took any science courses in high school, aside from intro, and non while in university.

Would I have to start a whole new undergrade degree in a related/dentistry field to fulfil the science related course requirements? Am i basically starting from scratch without any science background?

Im in Ontario, if anyone else has had the same experience.

CALIFORNIA DENTAL SCHOOLS , MASTERS DEGREE??

Hi everyone!

So I have been searching the web for some insight on obtaining a masters before dental school. Heres my situation: I am in my 3rd year of undergrad. I entered my university as a pre-biology student, I believe I had my mid-life crisis early in life, fell into depression, and as a result, failed a good amount of classes. My overall GPA is currently a 2.8, but I believe I can get it higher. Here me out after this next part (path looks brighter after I learned my mistakes)...I failed general chemistry ... twice... (F first time and a D the second) so I was not eligible to retake it a 3rd time at my university and ultimately, not able to major in ANY science degree due to general chem being a prerequisite for most of the classes. I got myself out of the rut eventually and after trying other majors, I decided I still had a passion for science. I took general chemistry at a community college which gave me the ability to take the pre-reqs for dental school at my 4-year regardless of me failing twice (credits transfer over). I got a B second semester, its looking like a A this semester. I also got a A in physics last semester and this semester my grade is looking like a B. I have been kinda doing the "post-baq" route by majoring in Consumer Affairs which gives me the ability to finish both my major requirements and pre-reqs for dental school on time. I have strong belief that my science GPA will be pretty good. Im afraid that because of my low cGPA and failing general chemistry twice that it will affect my admission, especially because I took a loop hole route & took the class at a community (which I heard they look down upon b/c communities are easier). I was thinking of a masters degree because at my 4-year you do not need a science undergrad degree to get a masters in science, as long as, you talk to the science department about your plans for your future. Also because I heard dental school admission is easier with a masters degree. I am taking a year after my undergrad to study for the DAT and will technically have a 2 year gap between dental school and undergrad. Within those 2 years, I think I can accomplish a masters but here are my worries: being burnt out then settling with a masters. Do any of you guys think its worth doing a masters degree if I have an average cGPA (~3.0-3.4) in a non-science degree/an easy degree (aka consumer affairs) but obtain a high sGPA (~3.7-3.9)?? Keep in mind, if I study a whole year (considering people commi

Best route for a pre-dental student interested in enlisting after obtaining a degree

So I’m currently a dental hygienist with 2 associate degrees who just enrolled to a university starting this fall for my Bachelor in Science degree. The plan after would be to apply to Dental School. My BF is currently at RTC, PIR date is approaching next week. Since he started his journey, I’ve done tremendous research on the Navy, and the opportunities the branch provides. I peeked personal interest after learning a little about CLRP, ROTC, Dental Corps, etc. I’m trying to plan ahead and figure out the best option and route to take if I wanted to join the Navy. Should I join after obtaining my bachelor’s degree and enlist as an officer? Should I do the reserves? If you have any information on this topic, please help. Thank you

can you go back and finish a masters degree after dental school

Hello all, So last year I got waitlisted and was told it was because of the competitiveness of the incoming class. I retook my DAT And improved A LOT. I felt confident I had it this time. I applied to a masters program that is 2+ years long, thinking that I could get in to dental school and finish my masters later. My advisor and a few other people said this was do able, but now my school told me they can’t make a decision until I finish my masters. I sent a letter stating my intentions with the program and commitment to dental school. Is it an ethical/ legal thing that they can’t accept me while I’m in a program? Or will they most likely tell me I have to finish it before I reapply? My GPA in undergrad is a 3.5 and my DAT was a 19 AA. I don’t think they offer deferment. Any advice / input appreciated!

Dropping out of Dental school, to pursue, another degree

I completed my first year, of Dental school last year, before COVID struck. I, as well as a few of my friends returned back home, during our second year, since most of our classes were online. We were due to begin sim clinic, in August, but we were not allowed back into the country, so have had to wait. I have just found out, that we will most likely have to repeat the year, and to top it off, it is unlikely we will be allowed back in, until 2022, at the earliest. I kind of expected this, and prepared for the worst, by applying to a University, in Canada, where I will be studying computer science. It will only take me about a year, and a half, maybe a bit longer, since I had most of my classes transferred over from my previous degree. I don't really know if I am making the right choice though, but I do still have four years of Dental school left, which is why I am leaning towards dropping out. I will be in debt, for quite a bit of money, but it is something which I think I can pay off. I am not sure, if I am being too hasty, in deciding to drop out, or if I should just wait a year, and then go back, so any advice would be greatly appreciated

Deciding between some sort of chemistry degree or dental hygiene

Alright so I never knew what I wanted to be when I grew up. I stumbled across dental hygiene which there’s a great program close to my house at a university. I am currently doing my prerecs at a community college and I have just fallen in love with chemistry. I really feel like I found my passion. I don’t know a whole lot on what degrees in chemistry there are other than I researched some with chemical engineering, which inorganic chemistry is my favorite. I brought this up to my dad and he shot me down. He said job growth of hygiene is way higher than chemistry fields which is true. Any advice or suggestions?

Master’s Degree (SMP) or Post-Bacc for Dental School Applicants

Following the previous post β€œHow to Become a Dentist – Traditional Student Timeline” I felt inspired to talk about what to do for students who did not start out wanting to go into dentistry, or students who were not competitive enough to get into dental school. As a non-traditional applicant myself, I remember stressing over a lower GPA, and had looked into programs that increased my academic competitiveness. Hopefully this post can give some direction on what to do for students like myself.

My background

To start, I would like to talk about myself and how I got into dental school. As for what school I got into, I will omit that for privacy purposes.

I entered university in 2011 as a biology major. Over the course of the years, I did fairly well in my studies and hovered around a 3.5 GPA. Around my late junior year, things took a turn for the worse as my parents both fell near-terminally ill. As an only child, I dropped everything academic and accompanied them to their very frequent treatments. I had asked for incompletes, but some professors did not care enough and just gave me an F. As such, I received 2 F’s, 2 Incompletes, and 1 UW. Unfortunately, all of those were counted as F’s since a lot of my professors did not end up responding to me regarding work to finish the I, so my GPA dropped down to a ~2.8. At that point, I took my time to finish my degree because I honestly did not care anymore. I received my degree in 2017 with a 2.9 GPA.

At some point, I got over my rut and found a full time job in a dental clinic, started taking post-bacc courses (near 20 classes) and started studying for the DAT. Within 2 years, I pushed my GPA to roughly 3.2GPA and scored a 23AA. I had gotten 2 interviews and waitlisted at both of them, with both of them mentioning that my GPA was low, and that a master’s would have been a good choice. Following this, I researched and applied to a few master’s programs along with dental school and got into those programs. Fortunately, I ended up getting accepted to Dental school and did not have to go into the master’s but I was ready to commit. That was the end of my getting into dental school journey, and beginning of my dental student career.

Post Bacc vs Master’s – What are the differences?

On the AADSAS application, after you enter your course transcripts, your GPA will be calculated into several categories such as Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior, PostBaccalaureate, and Graduate GPAs. I’ll be focusing on

Dental hygienists- Did you ever notice a difference upon being hired with your particular degree?

Hopefully that title makes sense. I live in an area with many elite colleges that offer bachelor degree programs for dental hygiene. They are much more expensive than my community college though, so I went the CC route.

However, when all is said and done- even though I will have 4 years* credit wise under my belt, it is still a 2 year program that results in an associate degree.

I’ve spoken to people, and they say that it really doesn’t matter upon being hired in the real world. Some have said the bachelors is not necessary unless you wish to further your education.

I would love to know what some of you think about this!
