Imagine telling someone in early 2018 that Daniel Bryan, Edge, Sting, Christian, CM Punk, and Katsuyori Shibata would all be wrestling again within 4 years

Just a random feel-good thought that I had. This time 4 years ago:

  • Daniel Bryan/Bryan Danielson was retired due to concussion issues.
  • Edge was retired due to spinal issues.
  • Sting was retired due to spinal issues.
  • Christian was retired due to concussion issues.
  • CM Punk was in the middle of his self-imposed exile, with seemingly no desire to return to the industry.
  • Katsuyori Shibata reportedly had 'zero chance' of ever wrestling again and was lucky to be alive after the subdural hematoma.

5 wrestlers that were thought to be medically incapable of ever wrestling again are all back in the ring and working at a high level too, and the return of Punk is the icing on the cake. The last couple of years have been rough, but being able to see those 6 do their thing again is the stuff of dreams!

WON - Vince McMahon had given Daniel Bryan permission to do the G1 tournament if they could get a deal done. The talks between WWE and New Japan led Tony Khan to accelerate their relationship with AEW.

Dave notes this is despite Vince most likely not knowing what the G1 tournament is when he made that promise.

Dave also writes Bryan was motivated by wanting to build the industry as a whole by joining a strong competitor with his final decision being made when Nick Khan could not get the deal done to make WWE the exclusive provider of North American talent to New Japan. WWE had not wanted AEW talent working for New Japan if they were sending their wrestlers over. Staying with WWE would thus have meant Danielson could not work for New Japan.

Where did Zack Ryder fail where Daniel Bryan succeed?

I'm going to keep this short and overly simplistic just for sake of time and with the assumption, you are all familiar with these men's time in WWE. Where the company didn't want both to be ''The guy'' but WWE pull the trigger on one and not the other.

Zack Ryder basically got over with a lot of grassroots effort by honestly being ahead of his time by using social media to get himself over with his youtube channel. There were constant chants of Zack Ryder in most episodes on raw with the rock even acknowledged at one point in survivor series 2011. But ultimately he got buried by WWE and John Cena and his moment has never risen again. You can argue he is everything WWE would want in a main eventer. Tall, Pretty, charismatic, and got himself over.

Daniel Bryan is kinda similar to where fans would hijack shows on raw because they wanted Bryan to either win the WWE championship or the royal rumble. Ultimately he got to win the WWE championship multiple times and even main event Wrestlemania twice. So overall why did Bryan succeed but Ryder did not? What factors were at play that I'm not taking into account?

EDIT: the same question can apply to Dolph Ziggler too

What's better long-term booking - Daniel Bryan and Adam Page go to a 60 min draw on TV then have a rematch a few weeks later on TV. Nobody gets over any more than before. Or....

Daniel Bryan pins Adam Page in 26 seconds. Gets nuclear heat, Adam Page eventually earns a rematch but is cheated out of it. 5 months later at the biggest PPV of the year Page earns another shot and wins fairly over the biggest star in the company. Page is a star and Bryan has the most heat in the company. PPV buy rate is through the roof.
