A list of puns related to "Competency based learning"
College dropout here (recently diagnosed), looking to make a career change to IT. Does anyone have any experience with WGU (Western Governor's University) or competency-based learning in general? It sounds like it could be the best or worst thing ever but I want to see if any ADHDers/SCTers have any relevant experience first.
. I wish to ask about the things one should know in order to fix one's stuff by oneself?
What competency based or accelerated online colleges are there?
I'm working on something regarding competency and expertise development. If you read about The Dreyfus model of skills acquisition and similar other models of expertise the new learner starts as a novice. It is fundamental that the beginning learner should have texts or expert guidance to learn the subject matter properly. The following stages demonstrate more advanced competency skills related to the subject matter. Eventually, the skills or knowledge when used by experts become completely automated.
- I believe the guidelines are primarily focused on Ph.D. level students, but they state that Masterβs level degree holders should be βsavvy consumersβ of I/O content and skills at the completion of their education.
- The SIOP guidelines reference the importance of guidance or consultation with qualified professionals in independent study and field research.
- I/O borrows liberally from numerous other fields of psychology and the core content of those subfields.
So should a person holding at least a masterβs degree be fairly capable of learning content matter from other psychology fields independently and learn them well? This assumes that they know how to find the necessary materials to learn that core content systematically. This can be achieved by finding training and education guidelines and reading lists, class syllabi, and other resources. I am suggesting that they use a solid constructivist learning methodology to do so.
An example would be that I am interested in consumer behavior. At one time this was content of the I/O field before being swallowed up by business schools and dedicated consumer psychologists. So an I/O knowledgeable in learning theory could develop a curriculum and reading list of the following and in this order (This is also very similar to what I discussed with another I/O that got a consumer behavior gig): Consumer Behavior for Dummies -> review relevant attitude theory, motivation, individual differences and cognitive psychology from advanced social psychology texts course syllabi and reading lists which can be found easily enough online -> an advanced consumer behavior textbook -> Division 23 of APA: The Society for Consumer Psychology education and training guidelines -> A consumer behavior handbook -> Review new, relevant and exciting research in recent journals.
Should this be a reasonable project and goal of an I/O? To b

Do competency-based degrees that have GPA exist? What I mean is if I already know the material or am able to learn it quickly I can go faster like I could at for example WGU but where classes aren't strictly pass/fail and you do get a letter grade or grade point?
I am a fast learner and already have some knowledge of computer science so I like the idea of competency-based degrees but I want to be able to distinguish myself to an employer or to a graduate program if I ever went for my Master's or Ph.D. I feel like I won't be able to do that without a GPA.
EDIT: A glance makes it look like SNHU may be this. The page on financial aid mentions GPA but I have also read SNHU is competency-based. Still SNHU looks too expensive. Are there any that cost less, are competency-based, but still give you a grade for coursework?
Are there other online schools, with similar competency-based programs, that will definitely transfer into WGU?
My intention is to take a couple of the courses I'm most intimidated by/struggled with previously without the pressure of having to finish them in 4-6 weeks, then transfer them over and begin the WGU program with those in the bag.
The three in particular are:
- Quantitive Analysis For Business
- Principles of Financial and Managerial Accounting
- Intro to IT
HELP: What does the "ES" stand for?
Job description:
Hi
I have a competency based interview coming up in a few days.
Any resources/advice on how to prepare the stories that I need to tell using
the competencies listed on the Job Description. using the CAR.STAR style to answer the
CBI question.
How should I approach this? What are some of the successful techniques to deploy.
Hi everyone! I am an undergraduate student at the University of Saskatchewan. My group is working on a research project about remote learning and memory across ages. This study should take about 15 minutes and it is completely anonymous.
The study can be done following the link: https://www.surveymonkey.ca/r/RTQGYXF
Please contact me at digitalcompetencystudy@gmail.com if anyone is interested in helping me in this field or learning more about this topic.
Self-Paced: you finish however fast - or slow - it takes you. I mean, at a simple level, that's what it is.
Competency-Based: for the most part, your pacing as noted above is based on what you do - or don't - already know, but also, how easily you figure stuff out.
The combination of the two should result in what your experience will be.
Given the above, here's my question.
Does SNHU, in your opinion, fit both criteria or not?
From my read of people's commentary, it seems that neither are really true.
If you have to submit _____ on a weekly basis, someone is pacing for you. You can't go any faster than per-week assignments. OR, can you submit all assignments the first week and pass? Because if you can't, that's not self-paced.
If there's not an opportunity to take some sort of exam or even write a paper that allows you to immediately pass by proving competency, that's not competency-based.
Thoughts?
Hi guys... I have a Competency interview next week and Iβve been meticulously drawing up and rehearsing my examples over and over again but Iβm a bit stressed and worried. What if they ask about something I havenβt prepared for? To think up a STAR example on the spot is extremely difficult... I spent all week thinking up my current examples. Iβm just stressing that my examples are what the interviewers will want.
Any advice?
