I've been thinking a lot about the amygdyla and hippocampus, because I'm trying to find ways to let stuff go, old injuries and trauma.

Cybin has announced that the FDA has authorized an Investigational New Drug application to proceed with the company’s sponsored feasibility study using Kernel’s Flow technology to measure ketamine’s psychedelic effect on cerebral cortex hemodynamics.
This study requires patients to wear headgear equipped with sensors to record brain activity. Leveraging Kernel’s quantitative neuroimaging technology may lead to new frontiers in psychedelic therapeutics by enabling the acquisition of longitudinal brain activity before, during and after a psychedelic experience.

I realise this may be a dumb question but I’m struggling to visualise what the cerebral cortex looks like at a cellular level. If grey matter contains only cell bodies and dendrites and white matter myelinated axons, how can synapses be formed? I am just picturing a bunch of cell bodies in the grey matter with axons projecting downwards into the white matter but I can’t imagine how connections can be formed this way. Again, apologises if this sounds stupid! I hope this makes sense. Any diagrams would be super useful too.
