Chapter 37 "The Catacombs of Saint Sebastian" Reading discussion (Spoilers up to Chapter 37)

Discussion starters:

>You would have thought that Rome, under the magic wand of some demon of the night, had changed into one vast tomb. By an eventuality which added to the blackness of the night, the moon was waning and not due to rise until eleven o’clock, so the streets through which the young man walked were plunged in utter darkness.

  1. Here we have Dantes once again underground, using his night vision skills that he developed whilst in prison. Do you think that the use of darkness is effective in suggesting a sinister plot?

  2. Beppo and Teresa played their part in the kidnapping of Albert. Do you think that these two characters have finished their role in the story, or will they become primary characters?

  3. What did you think about the reaction of the Count when he was obliged to shake Albert's hand, and indeed of Franz's reaction?

>He held his hand out to the count, who shuddered as he took it in his own but did return the handshake even so.

  1. I'm enjoying this section with Franz and Albert (although when they were first introduced I was a bit confused), however some members of the group are not. I feel like each element of the story will end up being crucial in some way, so if I hit a boring patch, I just go with the flow and trust the author. Your thoughts?

Final line:

>Franz, meanwhile, was thinking about the extraordinary shudder that had passed through the whole of the Count of Monte Cristo’s body at the moment when he was more or less obliged to give Albert his hand.
