A list of puns related to "Carbohydrate chemistry"
https://doi.org/10.1002/chem.201101163 I am working on synthetic routes to a glucoside. The beta-trimethylsilylethoxymethyl (SEM) group has some attractive features (particularly in regards to deprotection using fluoride ion), but I have only found one paper in which four SEM groups were used to protect the oxygen atoms at carbons 2-4 and 6 of a glycoside conjugated with a steroid. They did not deprotect to the best of my knowledge, but I assume that one would use a standard recipe. I did find a paper in which a glycoside was protected with several different groups, including one SEM. Are there disadvantages to using the SEM group as the protecting group? Are there reasons why it has been used more in carbohydrate chemistry? Should I be favoring other protecting groups instead?
From the Breaking the Vicious Cycle website, the overall goal is:
Examples of simple carbohydrates include molasses and table sugar but they are excluded from the diet. While examples of complex carbohydrates include green vegetables, which are included in the diet.
This is the basis for my confusion. Further, I thought that the "good" bacteria reside in the colon (at the end of the intestine). If we consume simple carbohydrates, they get absorbed start of the intestine, starving the "good" bacteria at the end. And, as the starved, they begin to attack the cell wall. Further, we need to feed these bacteria as they convert complex carbohydrates into short-chain fatty acids, which are needed by your T-cells to keep the immune system in check. So when they aren't fed, the immune system acts up. To feed them, we need to eat complex carbohydrates and fibre as these substances will make it to the colon. Similarly, homemade probiotic yoghurt is suggested but surely this would just serve to increase the number of bacteria in the gut. I thought this was a good thing but the consensus on-line seems to be that we want to starve them.
Any insight at all would be greatly appreciated! I need to get on this diet but I can't get the logic straight in my head.
I'm a first year grad student in the process of choosing an advisor. There is a group I'm interested in that has recently started branching out from catalysis/ methodolgy type research to carbohydrate chemistry. I originally planned on joining that group to work in the methodology area, but the carbohydrate project sounds pretty interesting. I know very little about that area, so I'm wondering if it's a marketable field to go into (preferably industry at this point), or is methodology a safer bet?
Okay so here's the question. "Ballpark figures suggest that we get 9 food Calories from a gram of fat and 4 food Calories from a gram of carbohydrate. Based on the data of one serving, calculate the number of grams of Total Fat and the number of grams of Total Carbohydrate per gram of food."
Now, from the experiment I know that a peanut has roughly 2.846 Cal/g. I just don't know how to use this information to answer the question above. I feel like it's probably much simpler than I realize, but my brain just cannot make sense of it. I would be extremely grateful for help.
Carbohydrates (like glucose) can be represented by both a straight chain structure and a ring structure.
Example: http://flatworldknowledge.lardbucket.org/books/the-basics-of-general-organic-and-biological-chemistry/section_19/5df38314007b0d4b2339d3c3b62022c2.jpg
I can tell the difference between d and l isomers of carbohydrates when they are represented in the straight chain form (the OH group on the second farthest carbon from the carbonyl is facing to the right in the d-isomer), but I cannot tell the difference between the d and l isomers when the carbohydrate is represented in the ring form. Are d and l isomers of carbohydrates distinguishable in their ring forms?
Thanks a lot!
Edit: For clarification, the carbon that distinguishes between the d and l isomers of a carbohydrate is labeled carbon 5 in the above picture. If the OH is on the right, then the molecule is a d-isomer, if the OH is on the left, the molecule is an l-isomer.

I don't have high hopes for this one. My university's library has volumes 1 - 7, but not 8 or 9. Any help would be appreciated.
Are there any textbooks that contain compiled protocols/conditions for common organic reactions (ex. SOCl2-mediated chlorination, Mitsunobu, Grignard, ozonolysis, etc.) targeted at young graduate students?
EFFECTS OF BLOOD GLUCOSE ON EXECUTIVE FUNCTION
Neurons love glucose, but blood serum glucose concentrations donβt influence intraneuronal glucose concentrations:
GLUT3 has a low Km for glucose of 1.6 mM. It transports glucose into brain cells at a rate that is independent of the plasma level of glucose.
GLUT1 has a low Km for glucose of βΌ2 mM. It is responsible for glucose transport across the bbb at a rate that is independent of the plasma level of glucose.
Brain βfogβ is a constellation of symptoms that include reduced cognition, inability to concentrate and multitask, as well as loss of short and long term memory. Inflammation in the CNS caused by microglia cells is known to be a causal factor for brain βfogβ.
High glucose condition increases NADPH oxidase activity in endothelial microparticles that amplify endothelial inflammation
Multiple inflammatory cytokines and mediators in the CNS are induced by high glucose treatment via the key signaling pathways. High glucose induced expression of inflammatory cytokines and reactive oxygen species in cultured astrocytes.
Acute blood glucose fluctuation enhances rat aorta endothelial cell apoptosis, oxidative stress and pro-inflammatory cytokine expression in vivo
Fructose is worse: βChange in CRP was also significantly higher in subjects consuming fructose compared with those consuming glucose (Pβ<β0.05), but not sucrose (Pβ=β0.07).β
EFFECTS OF NUTRIENT SENSING PATHWAYS
Although adequate nutrition is essential for optimal neural activity and survival, mild energy restriction may improve cognition and prolong longevity.
Energy status is monitored by the cellular AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) system, whereas leptin regulates total energy balance.
We investigated the roles of AMPK and leptin in cognition and survival under diet restriction (DR).
Hippocampal AMPK activity increases with energy restriction.
Catecholamine neurons likely convey caudal hindbrain input to hypothalamic AMPK.
Fasting regimens more effectively reduced C-reactive protein than energy-restricted diets.
Acute fasting increases somatodendritic dopamine release in the ventral tegmental area
Elevated blood glucose and insulin levels are the most potent deactivors of AMPK, seconded by mTOR activating amino acids such as leucine
Dhillon et al. found that a lunch relatively high in fat, with the majority of its energy com

First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
Do your worst!
I'm surprised it hasn't decade.
Dear people of this subreddit : readers, long lost relatives, brothers, fellow retainers, boys, teens, men.
Iβd like to share my humble testimony and experience on this journey. I will try to be as concise as possible, and organize my thoughts so you can easily refer to elements, provided you come back to this
I. My life
I am in my early 30s. Coomer for almost 2 decades, so much lost energy and vigor. But this is no time for regret. I am not here to ask for pity, and you ought not to ask this to anybody. Instead, feel this anger, this wrath, turn it into fury, a holy fury that will fuel your projects and dreams.
I served in the Army for 6 years, and was a junior officer. I was too young to understand the importance and the impact of what I learnt at the time, and I am still figuring out so many things. Discipline is key, but self-discipline, that is when no one is watching, except your consciousness, this is the true Holy Grail.
I had a tumultuous relationship with my father, who recently died. The curse is lifted, somehow. I am grateful for the education my mother taught us, my siblings and I. She did her best with what she had, blessed be her soul.
I am currently undergoing the process to apply to medical school : I want to be MD. This is no easy task, and insanely selective, almost in a barbaric way. You might now understand why retention is so precious.
Retention is a tool, a means, and a lifestyle. Please, do not make it an absolute, balance is in the heart of all things. If you want to build a family, you will have to release : but you will do it purposefully, to create life, a life, to bring upon Earth a new soul, and raise the blood of your blood with a caring woman and wife.
II. My experience
So far, 85 days. My previous longest was 74 days, but I was still in the porn mindset. Right before starting, I was still entangled in this addiction. I somehow clicked that it had to stop, so I stopped. It took me so much effort, but it became increasingly easier.
I was dating a lot prior to starting, cooming with randos, making coom and orgasm the ultimate goal of the sexual intercourse, albeit I took great care to pleasure as much as possible my partner. Donβt lose your precious seed needlessly, cherish it. Honour your body both as a temple for your soul, and as a little animal, a pet that accompany you during your time of this Earth and who loves you. Love yourself, my friends.
Lust and cravings come from time to time, but they become m

The rise of digital technology has brought fabulous things into our world.
We no longer need ships, snail mail, professional messengers, or travel to communicate with someone on the other side of the globe. All we have to do is open Facebook or a messenger app and write them something, and they will receive the message immediately.
You can even call them and hear their voice or see their face in real-time.
We donβt have to walk to the shop anymore to buy our groceries or clothes. We can order anything we want online with a couple of clicks, and it will be delivered right to your doorstep.
Damn, thereβs no need to go to work anymore. The coronavirus outbreak has shown us that you can accomplish your daily work from the confinements of your home. Many employers have sent their employees to work from home because that is much safer than spending 8 hours in a jammed office.
However, not everything is as good as it sounds. The Third Industrial Revolution has also brought the pandemic of mental illnesses, the lack of physical exercise, and the rise of crappy diets.
36% of adults in the United States suffer from obesity.
27% of adults in the United Kingdom suffer from obesity.
23% of adults in Russia suffer from obesity.
About 13% of the global population (that is 650 million adults) is obese. 1.9 billion are overweight [1]
Those are frightening numbers, especially considering that it is all preventable with proper nutrition and training regimens.
Yes, some people are indeed more prone to gain excessive fat than others, but those people are rare, and 90% of them can regulate their weight simply by eating properly and engaging in physical exercise.
From a biological standpoint, fat was very functional back in the old days.
Every living being needs the energy to survive. Without it, animals (humans included) canβt do anything. But, how do we get it then? Good question. Through chemical processes that occur in our body.
We all know that food consists of three macronutrients: proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. When food or liquid enters our body, our liver, kidneys and other organs begin to break down the food or liquid to these macronutrients.
Then, these macronutrients are broken down [2] even further, and through the clever use of che

Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.
This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.
If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.
