Glutamine or caprylic acid first?

I recently began making changes to improve my gut health, as I’ve been diagnosed with candida. I stopped drinking coffee first thing in the morning and instead eat a small breakfast. I know one of the next step is to use caprylic acid to kill off candida, but should I start with glutamine to rebuild cell walls first or maybe stack the two together?

Caprylic acid gave me terrible headache - should I continue using it?

I started taking 1200 mg (600 in the morning and 600 in the evening with meals) to promote gut health. I have been dealing with loose stools for 2 years, treated for sibo with metronidazole that didn't really help. I've been taking caprylic acid for two days now, the first day I had mild headache that eventually went away, but yesterday I got terrible migrain that lasted several hours and I couldn't get up from bed. Could this be a die off reaction, should I lower the dose, or just stop taking this supplement?

Thoughts on Caprylic Acid & Probiotics combo?

One month ago I was diagnosed with a mild Balanitis and was prescribed with Fluconazole (I took a 150mg pill per week during 4 weeks) and applied some creams. It has gotten better, but it's not completely gone and I'm suspecting it might be caused by a Candida overgrowth.

During those 4 weeks that I took Fluconazole I did not feel any symptoms of die-off at all so I'm assuming it might not be a severe overgrowth, or Fluconazole didn't actually remove but rather just "paused" the Candida's growth. I already changed my diet by removing processed food and most sugars (which I consumed quite a lot to be fair) and now I'm about the give it a shot with Caprylic Acid and probiotics to reinforce the treatment and repoblate my gut with good bacteria.

Has anyone tried these combination before? Some heads up or advice would be greatly appreciated as to effectiveness, dosage or any symptoms associated. Thanks in advance!

I bought Caprylic Acid supplements ! + D3 and Calcium/ Magnesium/ Zinc. Your thoughts ?

I am 31 F, and my SD is on my face near my mouth / laugh lines for 1.5 years. Other areas of my skin are clear and healthy mostly

So I’ve heard some people having great success (flare ups are stopped for months ) after introducing this daily supplement.

Does anyone have suggestions / links as to how much I should take ? I’m just taking 1 pill of the NOW brand Caprylic acid. (Directions say take 1 pill 2x a day with food)

(Caprylic acid is another name for MCT oil)

This week I’ve also started taking

Vitamin D 3 (10,000 IUs - 5 pills) Calcium / Magnesium / Zinc Vitamin C too

I’ve seen numerous reports of people saying that these have helped curb SD flares.

Some people report using only one of these with favorable results. But over several months I keep hearing these mentioned.

If you have any info or advice please share in the comments below.

Good luck to all of us :)

Ketosis After Intake of Coconut Oil and Caprylic Acidβ€”With and Without Glucose: A Cross-Over Study in Healthy Older Adults (Pub. 2020-04-15)

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7175812/

Abstract

Introduction: Medium-chain-triglycerides (MCT), formed by fatty acids with a length of 6–12 carbon atoms (C6–C12), constitute about two thirds of coconut oil (Coc). MCT have specific metabolic properties which has led them to be described as ketogenic even in the absence of carbohydrate restriction. This effect has mainly been demonstrated for caprylic acid (C8), which constitutes about 6–8% of coconut oil. Our aim was to quantify ketosis and blood glucose after intake of Coc and C8, with and without glucose intake. Sunflower oil (Suf) was used as control, expected to not break fasting ketosis, nor induce supply-driven ketosis.

Method: In a 6-arm cross-over design, 15 healthy volunteersβ€”age 65–73, 53% womenβ€”were tested once a week. After a 12-h fast, ketones were measured during 4 h after intake of coffee with cream, in combination with each of the intervention arms in a randomized order: 1. Suf (30 g); 2. C8 (20 g) + Suf (10 g); 3. C8 (20 g) + Suf (10 g) + Glucose (50 g); 4. Coc (30 g); 5. Coc (30 g) + Glucose (50 g); 6. C8 (20 g) + Coc (30 g). The primary outcome was absolute blood levels of the ketone Ξ²-hydroxybutyrate, area under the curve (AUC). ANOVA for repeated measures was performed to compare arms.

Results: Ξ²-hydroxybutyrate, AUC/time (mean Β± SD), for arms were 1: 0.18 Β± 0.11; 2: 0.45 Β± 0.19; 3: 0.28 Β± 0.12; 4: 0.22 Β± 0.12; 5: 0.08 Β± 0.04; 6: 0.45 Β± 0.20 (mmol/L). Differences were significant (all p ≀ 0.02), except for arm 2 vs. 6, and 4 vs. 1 & 3. Blood glucose was stable in arm 1, 2, 4, & 6, at levels slightly below baseline (p ≀ 0.05) at all timepoints hours 1–4 after intake.

Conclusions: C8 had a higher ketogenic effect than the other components. Coc was not significantly different from Suf, or C8 with glucose. In addition, we report that a 16-h non-carbohydrate window contributed to a mild ketosis, while blood glucose remained stable. Our results suggest that time-restricted feeding regarding carbohydrates may optimize ketosis from intake of MCT.

MCT Oil/Caprylic Acid - Last Hope

I’ve tried over 20 shampoos and oil mixtures, all of them either ineffective or reducing in their efficacy. The shampoos are very drying for my Afro textured hair so I would like to try the caprylic acid alternative.

Symptoms:

Dry/itchy/smelly scalp

Greasy flakes on scalp + eyebrows

Chest/back acne (may or not be related)

Questions:

Will the oil or pill help better with my described symptoms?

Which specific brand of MCT OIL/Caprylic acid pills should I use? (Amazon UK and I’m thinking of Now Foods 600mg CA)

Dangers of pill form? I’ve heard about it messing with digestion etc.

Sorry if you’ve seen similar questions but I think my situation is slightly different to most.

Caprylic Acid vs Coconut Oil

Is caprylic acid supposed to work different than coconut oil?

Coconut oil makes me feel awful. I assume it's die-off, but it's the only anti-fungal that gives me a noticeable die-off. And the "die-off" never ended even after consuming it for months. I don't think it's a coconut allergy, because I don't have the same problem eating whole coconut products.

Also, I have seborrheic dermatitis rashes on my face, and coconut oil was the worst thing I've tried topically. It made the seb derm itch and burn. I once again thought it must be some kind of die-off and kept using it on my face for months, but it only got worse. I later tried mct oil (which is caprylic and capric acid) on my face. It didn't help the seb derm, but it also didn't make it worse like coconut oil.

[PSA] Breakthrough from allergic reaction to MCT oil (Caprylic Acid)!

I have very sensitive skin that seems to react to everything, so I've been slowly testing things to find a routine that works. I am no there yet, but a few days ago I decided to test MCT oil because it is fungal acne safe and apparently a great moisturizer boost for people who are dehydrated and breakout prone. So I have been applying pure caprylic acid (C8) MCT oil for 5 days on just one side of my face while I continued my usual squalane on the other.

I kept all other products the same for both sides. With each day the left side of my face and neck has become itchier while the right has not. No breakout or rash just a light dry itchiness that's been getting more noticeable everyday. A few nights ago, I decided to use the MCT oil instead of coconut oil in my golden milk latte. About an hour after having the latte the inside of my mouth was super itchy. I originally attributed this to having eaten a banana that may have been slightly too unripe. However, this morning my skin on my left side was so dry and itchy and the skin above just my left eye was crepey and flaky and it dawned on me that it felt like how the inside of my mouth had felt.

Now I'm wondering about other similar coconut derivatives in skincare (caprylic/capric triglyceride) and whether my inability to find any products I can tolerate might be related to this. I do eat regular coconuts and coconut oil without experiencing any of this itching. Has anyone found that they can't tolerate caprylic acid or caprylic/capric triglyceride? Are there other coconut derivatives I should be wary of?

Lauric acid is C12, so I was wondering if capric acid (C10) or caprylic acid (C8) would work well on hair? Turns out both are sold as medium chain triglyceride dietary supplements, so they wouldn't be hard to get hold of.

Caprylic (Octanoic) Acid as a Potential Fatty Acid Chemotherapeutic for Glioblastoma - May 2020

https://doi.org/10.1016/j.plefa.2020.102142

Abstract

High grade glial tumors (HGGs) including anaplastic astrocytoma (WHO Grade-III) and glioblastoma multiforme (GBM, WHO Grade-IV) are among the most malignant cancers known to man. Due to their defective mitochondria, HGG cells consume glucose via glycolysis even in the presence of oxygen. Overall survival is worse in HGG patients that are hyperglycemic. Unlike normal neural cells, HGG cells cannot efficiently metabolize ketone bodies for energy. Thus, a metabolic treatment based on therapeutic ketosis (reduced glucose with elevated ketone bodies) was proposed to treat GBM and was supoported from preclinical studies. Caprylic (octanoic) acid, a monocarboxylated saturated fatty acid, is among the best producers of ketone bodies and induces necrosis of experimental tumors at high dose. Caprylic acid is enriched in coconut and in goat's milk. It is also a posttranslational modifier of the ghrelin hormone and is produced in trace amounts in human tissues. Caprylic acid is a straight-chain isomer of the antiepileptic valproic acid, which is used in treatment of HGG-associated seizures and which may increase survival in GBM patients according to epidemiological observations. Among the valproic acids analogs tested, caprylic acid is the most potent molecule to block C6 astrocytoma cell growth in vitro and accumulates selectively within glial cells as shown by Positron Emission Tomography in vivo. Caprylic acid blocks glycolysis both in healthy liver and in malignant liver cells, which is more prominent in the latter and also lowers blood glucose. Noteworthy, caprylic acid exerts neuroprotective- and mitochondria-protective effects in several models of neurodegenerative diseases. Boost injections of caprylic acid at non-toxic levels during classical ketogenic metabolic therapy may fortify antitumor actions and reduce systemic toxicity by differential programming of mitochondrial and other metabolic pathways.
