It seems all aggressive whales and dolphin have a single hole blow hole. While filter feeders have more of a nostril shape nose . I dont see much talk about this adaptation and was wondering and looking for insight.

last week I laid out a seed world idea involving toy dogs.

The idea is the dogs start off being fed by the automated systems on an abandoned space ship, then move to catching fish is streams outside the ship when it breaks down. Eventually Some of those Dogs evolve to live off plant life, and in turn other dogs evolve to hunt the herbivores dogs.
Dogs are not built all that differently from the earliest ancestors of wales so suppose some of them (presumably the fishing dogs) evolved into whale like forms. For that to work would they have to move their nostrils and lose their amazing sense of swell like whales did?
