I'm pulling distances from Wikipedia so correct me if I'm way off.

I know that the alpha-centauri system is the closest to the Earth-Sun system, but that doesn’t mean we are the closest to it. What is the closest star to alpha-centauri that is not us?

A lesser show would have teased it forever and then never actually spent the budget to show it (looking at you Foundation).

During the landing I was literally smiling from ear to ear. So much awe and wonder. A new and better civilization of hope. Best scifi moment since Molly on the launch-pad in For All Mankind. This show truly was the torchbearer of the Star Trek spirit since Star Trek dropped it.

I've played a lot of 4X games over the years aside for the very old ones (around the early 00s). I decided to give Alpha Centauri (AC) a go several months ago and I can with certainty say that in my opinion AC is one of the best, if not THE best, 4X game in the market to this day.

PROS:

The game has a complex terraforming system which makes the game feel dynamic and rather unpredictable at times. I've seen no other game employ terraforming to this extent. You can lower/raise terrain which affects climate and income, you can make boreholes affecting ecology, create rivers to help with transport and fertility etc. It also has a climate model (albeit simple) that works very well and is logical, it is also influenced by terraforming. I've seen no other 4X game with dynamic climate affected by the input of the player.

The premise of the story-line is appealing and intriguing, something I feel most 4X games are lacking. The game has charm and personality whereas most 4X games are spreadsheet games with no form of identity. For gods sake, even the Planet itself is a "player". This is not nostalgia speaking since I'm a new player. Nor am I biased because I've played dozens of 4X games (many of which I've enjoyed). The closest game on this regard would be Endless Legends with the unique faction story-lines and their inherent differences causing conflict, the planet and climate.

Diplomacy actually matters in this game. If you're too isolationist, rejecting other factions offers, they go to war against you. If you are at a disadvantage and are not interested in negotiating with others, why should they tolerate you? How you interact with the AI does have ramifications; something I've not seen in any other 4X game. If you are mean to the AI by ignoring communication, rejecting trade offers, rejecting treaties etc, they get pissed off and find you to be a threat in the making. This means that you can play around the diplomacy by choosing wisely how to approach them. This can be the difference between ending up in a bloody never-ending war or making a valuable ally. In other 4X games, being pissy with the AI dialogue has no consequences.

The game IS NOT convoluted like other 4X games. Everything in the game is intertwined which is a good thing. You want to facilitate extreme economic growth? You do so by using the appropriate social policies and building certain buildings. The consequences of this are that now, a faction won't agree on your social policy. The

For me, it would be stop acting so superior because you're 1.34 parsecs closer to the galactic center. The Central Massive Object plays no favorites.

I was talking about this game with my friends and how incredible it was. Firaxis (or whoever) wouldn't need to change anything about the substance or story of the game, simply update the graphics and make it for current OS. The graphics were so bad they were actually painful to look at sometimes, but the game play itself was amazing. I'm critical of all the crappy remakes and remasters in recent years but this one would be so easy to do right because nothing needs to change other than the graphics.

It is hard in many ways to square the presentation of Zefram Cochrane in TOS "The Metamorphosis" and the First Contact film. One point that stands out is that Kirk designates him as "Zefram Cochrane of Alpha Centauri," whereas we know he's from Earth. What gives? In the (mostly superseded) novel Federation, Cochrane is presented as establishing the colony at Alpha Centauri, and in principle I think that idea still works. More than that, I don't think it's an artificial "fix" -- it makes sense that people would view that as a greater achievement than inventing warp travel as such.

It's one thing to demonstrate that a technology is possible, but why people really want faster than light travel is to go places. Even if warp travel were invented tomorrow, it would be little more than a scientific curiosity (and probably an expensive boondoggle in many people's minds) if it turned out there was nowhere worth going out in space.

Contact with the Vulcans showed us that there are people to meet when we go out to the stars, which is exciting but also a little humbling. After all, the Vulcans are much more advanced, both technologically and culturally, than 21st-century humans, and the hierarchical relationship that implies still obviously rankles Archer and Trip nearly a century later.

By contrast, finding a vacant but inhabitable planet to colonize means that humanity can preserve its own future, on its own terms. This point must have been especially front-of-mind for people who had just lived through a nuclear war -- even if the Vulcans offered help with re-terraforming Earth, they were basically living on a dying planet. Knowing that there was room to expand and preserve the human race on their own must have been a huge deal in that context.

Hence Zefram Cochrane is known as "of Alpha Centauri" because that represented the biggest impact of his invention from the perspective of his contemporaries -- even if it was more of a footnote from the later perspective of the Federation (which would emphasize contact with the Vulcans instead). And Kirk may have used that more time-bound designation to test that this so-called Zefram Cochrane shared the perspective of Cochrane's era, because presumably an imposter from Kirk's own time would not think of the colonization of Alpha Centauri as his big breakthrough.

I am trying to start with the alpha centauri, and want to play vanilla (with some AI, QoL, balances mods)

What are the best mods for vanilla alpha centauri (without alien crossfire). Also that disable/fix/limit supply crawlers.

And what is the best binary patch/mod? I tried pracx and i really like zoom and some qol improvements. Is it compatible with other binary patches?

I just noticed while watching season that the buildings in the settlement on Alpha Centauri look like they may have perhaps been 3D printed. You can see this in the walls with all the layers on material forming a kind of lined texture similar to 3D printed houses here on Earth.

It’ll let me right? I’m bored watching YouTube and thought, why not.

This is a far in the future type of mission but what challenges will SpaceX face in sending people on a one-way trip to the Alpha Centauri star system? What might SpaceX have to do to solve those problems? Or should the international community commit to funding SpaceX to do that mission?

Sending a group of humans alive on a one-way trip to the closest star system beyond the sun is going to be the hardest problem to be facing humanity if we choose to take it on.
