Written Reviews
Empire by Olly Richards
>Mowgli is a valiant effort to do something different, to make viewers feel the excitement and deep fear of living among wild animals. It has some bold, interesting ideas, but after one watch this jungle book is likely to be left on the shelf.
Guardian by Peter Bradshaw
>So we trudge back to the uncanny valley for another bout of ultra-realistic animation. No songs at all now, and not much fun.
The Hollywood Reporter by Michael Rechtshaffen
>Episodic and distancing, the production, which had been slated as a Warner Bros. release until the studio sold worldwide distribution rights to Netflix in July, combines visuals that are alternately lush and nightmarish, performance-capture that falls unpersuasively short of state-of-the-art and a prestige cast (including Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett and Benedict Cumberbatch) that curiously fails to engage.
IGN by Jim Vejvoda
>Itβs intellectually intriguing and well-acted, but the inconsistent visual effects undermine the necessary suspension of disbelief when it comes to mixing live-action humans with talking CG animals in such a serious and somber adaptation of the Kipling classic.
Indiewire by Kate Erbland
>The disconnect between the artistic wonder of those characters and the rest of Mowgliβs family only distracts. From scene to scene, βMowgliβ is eye-popping and undercooked.

>The filmmakers are clearly trying to bring an uncommon maturity to the fantasy film, and in many respects they succeed. While not everything here works, what does is impressive.

>The uncanny valley of intent is an issue here, too. Who is thi

Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle also suffered a same fate as it was going to be released in cinemas by Warner Brothers until Netflix picked it up. Somehow, however, Paramount has released The Little Prince and The Cloverfield Paradox on Blu-ray, or at least is planning to do since the former comes out on home media next month. Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle, on the other hand, is still stuck at Netflix with no sign of home media release. Why is that? How come Paramount releases that went to Netflix eventually got Blu-ray release by Paramount while Warner Brothers release that went to Netflix still hasn't been released on Blu-ray by Warner Brothers? Were they going for different contract clauses(?) of sorts?
And this also brings up a question of Wish Dragon, an animated film that is planned for a Netflix release despite being made by Sony Pictures Animation. Given examples of The Little Prince and The Cloverfield Paradox on one side and Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle on the other side, what do you think will happen to Wish Dragon? Do you think this film will ever be released on home media like Blu-ray? Why or why not?

Tonight was the first time I'm watching this movie with my kids. I saw Mowgli pick up the cow bell, and I started to freak out when I heard Christopher Walken's voice. My wife never saw the SNL skit and she has no idea why I'm laughing. Haha!
