A list of puns related to "Wade Giles"
chad hanyu pinyin vs virgin wade-giles
Why is the sub name using Wade-Giles? That is colonizer language. It is what the KMT uses, and was invented by foreign imperialist powers. Shame on you.
Hello there. I'm a Japanese student who's reading an old book (1940s) about Chinese/Japanese/Korean ancient history. Since the book is very old, it still uses the Wade-Giles system.
Wanting to pronounce things right, even though I don't study Chinese (at the moment), I looked online for a conversion table to pinyin (since I wasn't able to simply find how to pronounce Wade-Giles) and then used the Wikipedia page on pinyin to try and produce the most accurate pronunciation I could.
This still left me with some confusion though, as I had previously looked on YT for the way to pronounce "Tao", and was able to find this article.
There seems to be an inconsistency then. If I'm not wrong, 't' from Wade-Giles to pinyin is written as 'd'. The initials section on Wikipedia states then that 'd' is read as [t]. Why does it seem like the distinction between 't' with and without the apostrophe has been lost going from Wade-Giles to pinyin? One would think that the [d] sounds doesn't exist in Chinese. But I know it's not true, and the article I shared earlier, from this YT video makes it clear.
Can someone please shed some light on this? By the way, this is my first post here :)
Thank you!
edit: solved thanks to u/teskro
Out of curiosity, does anyone have an opinion on which system they prefer to read? I don't really know anymore, but I think I prefer the Wade-Giles system. It seemed to me that it didn't give a half bad pronunciation of the Chinese names and words and having to think about the way the sounds were transliterated made me remember the names and terms better. I read them in Pinyin and the phonics like aspect to them lets me just glide over the names and such without really thinking about them. I also like the exotic flavor all of the TS and such combinations with the hyphens lend to the text. On the other hand, I have been able to learn a more accurate pronunciation of various names and terms, which is never a bad thing. Is there a more appropriate method these days? I know the UN and the Chinese government prefer Pinyin now, but from what I understand the Taiwanese and a lot of other Chinese enclaves prefer the Wade-Giles system to be used.
what the fuck is Szechuan????? I'll kill you
I incorrectly commented earlier that they were teammates. The players were not necessarily on the field at the same time but still interesting to cover 6 decades of baseball using 4 guys. I'm sure there's a way to get there with 3 guys using Big Sexy, Phil Niekro and Nolan Ryan
Was curious about which were all of the sounds in Mandarin, where I stumbled upon the explanation on what is Pinyin and what came before it. Source
You can find the section in the lower right part of the page. Thought people here would find it interesting.
Or is it Hanyu Pinyin now? I would like to use my son's Chinese name as his English middle name. Prefer to spell it the way it's done in Taiwan, and under the same system all current Taiwanese born babies are under on their passports.
If so, Is it still done with a hyphen between the two (assuming there's two non just one) non-surname characters? And only the first character capitalized?
The characters for "Xi Jinping" in simplified Chinese are δΉ θΏεΉ³. The shinjitai characters in Japanese are ηΏθΏεΉ³. This is pronounced γγ γγγγΊγ using Japanese readings. However, if you were to use the original pinyin reading, it would be γ·γΌγΈγ³γγ³.
Similarly, the written characters for "Mao Tse-tung" (Wade-Giles, based on Nanking dialect of mandarin)/"Mao Zedong" (pinyin, based on Pekingese dialect of Mandarin) are ζ―ζ³½δΈ in simplified Chinese, and ζ―ζ²’ζ± in Japanese. The Japanese reading of ζ―ζ²’ζ± is γγγγγ¨γ, the Wade-Giles reading is γγͺγ»γγ©γΌγγ³, and the Pinyin reading is γγͺγ»γΌγ»γγ³.
In English, the pronunciation of Chiang Kai-Shek is based on the Cantonese pronunciation, because the Nationalists who overthrew the Qing Dynasty in 1911 were based in Guangzhou. In traditional Chinese (used in Taiwan), the characters are θ£δ»η³. In simplified characters (used in Mainland China) and in Japanese, it's θδ»η³. This is pronounced in Japanese as γγγγγγγ and in pinyin as γΈγ’γΌγ³γ»γΈγ¨γ»γ·γΌ.
Which method do laypeople use to read Chinese names in Japanese? What method do media (NHK, Nikkei, Record China, etc.) use?
I can't find one anywhere, so when in doubt Reddit. Any help would be great. Thanks!
I hope this is the appropriate sub for this question. I was looking at an old map that predates both pinyin and Wade-Giles and I was curious what romanization system (if any) was used.
Thanks again!

Below I'm going to breakdown every team's players who are under contract, free agents, and players that will be on expiring deals when next season begins to make it easier for everyone to see what their team can or can't do.
On Roster For Next Season:
Free agents:
1-Year Left on Deal:
[Some of the players that are under this category are rookie-extension/extension eligible. The better of the 2018 draft class (Trae Young, Luka Doncic, Deandre Ayton, etc.) will definitely receive one this off-season.]

Just call it GCD.
Taiwan province's KMT is called that because it's an acronym for Kuomintang. Kuomintang is how you write the characters εζ°ι»¨ using the Wade-giles transliteration method, most commonly used in HK, Macau and Taiwan.
In that same logic, the acronym for GΓ²ngchΗndΗng would be "GCD". That's how you spell ε ±δΊ§ε using pinyin, the official transliteration system of mainland China.
No more CPC or CCP, the real chad move is to just call it GCD giving no context whatsoever.
(still though, CPC>CCP)
Iβve watched the 2010 series, watched red cliff and resurrection of the dragon, seen several YouTube videos on the history, and played total war 3K (RIP), and now Iβm finally going to read the source material. I bought the version on Amazon, but didnβt realize it was abridged. I also didnβt particularly like the translation so far.
Which is the recommended translation for the full, unabridged novel?
I tried to expand my top 100 players and rank every survivor player ever through gameplay. They where split into tiers which contained multiple subgroups in them, which is what the spaces inbetween represent. Any player from the Subgroup is interchangeable with any other player in that subgroup as they are close in ability and I am Indecisive. (the exception is Tony, Parvati and Kim which are in the order listed). I Tried to consider both Proven feats and Natural survivor abilities. Obviously I don't remember every pre-merge player, particually from early seasons, so players might be out of order a bit.

... keep reading on reddit β‘i drew from a bucket paper slips numbered 1-42 for draft order of the first 5 rounds; and then for the bench draft, for some reason i decided it would be "fun" or "fair" to uhh... ok so what i did was i looked at who in real life was 42nd in the NBA in total minutes played, and the team that player went to in my league got the first pick in the 6th round. 41st got the second pick, 40th got the third and so on until i got to a player who was on a team that already had a pick, in which case i looked at who was 43rd in the real NBA in total minutes... (why?!)
also i did all this pretty much by eyeballing it so if i left an All-Star completely out of the league, whoopsies. for example, i forgot to include Oakland in the bench draft so i just gave them a bunch of guys named Cassius, Thon Maker, the guy Bill Simmons wanted the Celtics to draft, etc... but serves them right for learning absolutely nothing from the TMac debacle and drafting Mason Plumlee one spot ahead of Luka
why are there no NY or LA teams? because this is a visualization of another post i madehttps://www.reddit.com/r/nbadiscussion/comments/ngbc21/postlebron_leagues_i_should_probably_wait_til_the/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3and this is why teams only have a bench of 6 players. maybe if it rains again i will do one of the superteam league using some other random columns from bballref....

Context:
The list below is copiedΒΉ from a Word Perfect 5.1 file last modified in the mid-1990s, a few months after my birth. My mother spent considerable time researching names per family origins, so the majority of the list is likely the fruit of that labor, with a minority of names thrown in courtesy of my father.
The name selection & culling process began with each parent compiling personal lists of viable names; then, the lists were cross-checked for names they had in common. At the same time, certain names were vetoed. Names vetoed for me included:
Mom's priorities were avoiding names at high risk for cruel nickname derivations, and names at high risk for mispronunciation. For example, though she thought my (Greek Cypriot) paternal grandmother's name was beautiful, she expected Americans would mispronounce the second part as 'filly' and nickname me as such.
Ruling out both grandmothers' names for me meant not adhering to Greek naming conventions. They made up for this with my younger brother; so much for all the research into boy's names). I do want to point out that people have certainly mispronounced my surname throughout my life (+ subjected both it and my first name to misspellings), but ah well, so it goes.
ΒΉ I've made minor formatting adjustments for convenience's sake and added gender headings, but otherwise haven't changed the contentβtypos left in!

I apologize if this has been asked before but I was curious if anyone has an history book suggestions specifically related to the Three Kingdoms period. I particularly enjoy reading biography type entrys of all the big players during the time.
I canβt think of any other socialist country besides China that references leaders by first name, why is that?
