Piaget and Vygotsky

Need some help answering these education psychology questions related to this case study:

Mason is a seventh-grader who is having difficulty in math class. He stares blankly at the test paper asking him to compute fractions such as 5/7 and 9/12 as percentages. He can't remember at all how to determine whether 4/5 is larger or smaller than 5/8, so he makes a guess. He hopes that, with some luck, he might manage in the class. On the weekend, Mason is watching his favourite sport, basketball. He remarks to his sister, "Oh, this guy made eight out of 11 shots last week; he's close to an 80 percent shooter so he should be for these free throws." After the player makes both shots, Mason looks down at the statistics sheet he's been keeping on the local teams' shooting percentages and updates the statistics.

Discuss:

  1. Is the inconsistency between Mason's performances on school test problems and in working with basketball statistics a problem for Piaget's stage theory? That is if Mason is at a particular stage of reasoning, shouldn't he be able to deal with the school problems as successfully as the basketball ones? Explain.
  2. ) How might Vygotsky explain the role of other people in shaping Mason's math skills in the two contexts? Explain

If anyone who has more expertise on this topic could help me out I would really appreciate it

is "sociocultural cognitive theory" (vygotsky and how you learn from parents etc) different from "social cognitive theory" (bandura and observation and latent learning and reciprocal determinism)? are these specific terms specific to each theorist?

LEARNING FROM VYGOTSKY'S SOCIAL-CULTURAL THEORY

Now it is time to learn another learning concept but this time from Vygotsky's point of view. He is a Russian psychologist who argued that culture has a major impact on a child’s cognitive development. On one hand, many authors and researchers as Piaget defended that the development stemmed directly from the child, on the other hand, Vygotsky stated that skills as language, writings, and concepts arising from the.

This author supports the idea that social interactions with adults and more facilitate a child’s potential for learning. In other words, Vygotsky defended that we are social beings who need to interact a lot, and as a result of this interaction many things shall be discovered. On the contrary, if children only base their knowledge on what they see, it will be a sort of hurdle in the knowledge path.

The teacher’s role in the educational context is to act and perform as a facilitator for learning. In other words, teachers should act as tutors who guide exchanges, handle comprehensive discussions, and create an engaging community as strategies for cognitive development. Many educators use some of Vygotsky’s ideas in their curricula in order to facilitate social connection and small group learning in the classroom in an effort to see more growth.

For example, the teacher can implement items or topics as culture, which can be defined as the morals, values, and beliefs of its community members, which are held in place with systems and establishments. Positive conduct will be communicated by the use of language, creating a nice channel of communication. For that reason, culture is shaped over time as the result of specific events or specific moments in the life of the community members. That is why Vygotsky emphasized the crucial role of communication, creating another concept called the zone of proximal development,

Zone of Proximal Development

One of the theories that were also Vygotsky best known is the concept of the Zone of Proximal Development (also known as ZP) In this theory, the author highlights that children should be taught in the ZPD, in other words, it is the interaction between two people: one that dominates the knowledge and another one who does not. The main focus in this topic is to guide the learner to accomplish in the future to fully dominate the knowledge. The role of the guide is to help, build, and support throughout the whole process.

To wrap up, the author defends that the concept of being a social being not just fol

Why did Stalin censor the science of Marxist's like Vygotsky?

I am currently writing my dissertation on Vygotsky and looking to better understand the censorship that occurred during and after his death. If you read the work of Vygotsky, it is so profoundly influenced by Marxist thinking. He rejects essentialistic explanations of the human condition in favour of a belief that the individual develops as a result of interactions with the material world. If you contrast his work to his personal journal writings, there is much less direct mention of Marx in his academia, but to me, it seems that this is so ingrained in his beliefs that he leaves it assumed?

Could anyone help me to understand why this was so heavily censored under Stalin? Was it merely optics in that Vygotsky didn't directly cite Marx enough?

Vygotsky theory of language/thought?

KA 300 pg doc says Vygotsky viewed language and thought as independent, then later says he thought language led to thought, which appears more in line with the Whorfian hypothesis. Can anyone help clear this up? Thanks.

Vygotsky & Language

Just had a quick question on Vygotsky's POV on language - cognition directionality.

From what I got from UWORLD, they basically said Vygotsky thought they develop separately and merge later.

KA 300 pg seems to say that Vygotsky thought more that language accelerates cognition and therefore is language -> cognition direction.

Can someone clarify?

Theories of Language Acquisition: Vygotsky vs Krashen

If anyone is at all familiar with Language Acquisition Theories, I had a quick question. Vygotsky's ZPD focuses on learning by introducing a material that is slightly above the learner's comprehension, then providing scaffolds to help the learners reach the new level. On the other hand, Krashen's 5 Hypothesis, in specific his Input Hypothesis, which states if i represents previously-mastered knowledge, then input (class instruction, class resources etc) should be i+1.

As for my question, how do these two points differ? Or are they just saying the same thing?

what does Vygotsky think about language and thought?

Initially, I thought that he believed language and thought were separate but then came together when children want to socialize with others. However, another anki card says that he thought language influences thought. Thanks!

Where does r/ECEProfessionals stand on Tools of the Mind/Vygotsky?

I am a teaching artist and quite recently encountered Tools of the Mind. I am currently training in this method and very interested in hearing what the other ECE folks on Reddit have experienced with either Tools specifically or Vygotsky in general.

For those who have not encountered Tools before, this site does a great job describing five basic principles of a Tools classroom.

Thanks!
