A list of puns related to "Viral Diseases"
I understand that when trying to determine the cause of a mass extinction that it makes sense to explore things you might actually find decent evidence for (e.g., bolide impact, climate change, volcanic eruptions). But, has there been serious inquiry into whether a new disease spanning a range of species (or a limited number of species critical to ecosystems) might have been the cause of a mass extinction?
Not thinking of any highly-infectious viral disease in particular, obvs.
Hey I got a question that I just thought of now. For example, meningitis can be bacterial or viral. How do scientists know that there are 2 versions of the same disease. I am really confused since viruses and bacteria are quite different. So how is meningitis either bacterial or viral. I hope this question makes sense. :)
Yes another piece of INOVIO's priceless pipeline is in the spotlight!!!!!!.....Can someone post the link since I am a tech klutz LOL
I suggested as much on todayβs Kurzgesagt AMA. It looks like I narrowly missed the live AMA but this is still a great chance for visibility and they will likely check back in. Help me upvote it into the top 10 questions!
Update: use the link above to upvote the question! Just upvoting here wonβt do any good!
If youβre new to it, Kurzgesagt (translating to βin a nutshellβ in German) makes some of the most visually stimulating educational videos on the web. Admittedly that doesnβt make it great for pwME, but itβs certainly enjoyed by its 16.7 million YouTube subscribers.
I guess what I want to know is what is the difference between the flu virus and the measles virus that requires that I get a new shot every year for the former and not for the later. Thanks in advance!
I am curious to know if anyone has ever caught a βstomach fluβ after they have been diagnosed with Crohnβs Disease? I personally never did, or at least I donβt think I ever did, perhaps the symptoms are very similar to a bad flare up. Last time I was sick I was a kid but now my husband is out of town and caught what really seems like a viral infection as a coworker came back to work after getting the same symptoms (vomiting and diarrhea). Iβm supposed to go pick him up tomorrow and I was wondering if anyone would know how catching it would feel with Crohnβs Disease. Would the symptoms be worse, would it go unnoticed?
For clarity I am not really sick right now but I do feel my bowel moving more than usual (or remission-usual), which is probably due to a lack of discipline with my diet and lifestyle. I am also not on any treatment (no immunity suppressors) so I donβt think I would be more prone to catch it or feel sicker because of that but since this virus is quite contagious I am very likely to catch it regardless. Any thoughts or advices?
To those of you who study immunology, I apologize in advance :) there's a lot from preclinicals in medical school I've already forgotten.
But the academic exercise I'm posing is this: a patient's immune response to an inoculation with covid (or any viral illness) depends in part on the viral load of that inoculation. There's a hypothetical dose-response curve here, as far as I can tell, with a higher viral load (generally) producing a higher immune response. A low enough viral load produces a subclinical response. So if we give a vaccine dose at first sign of infection, we've artificially raised the "viral load" dosing (a combination of real viral antigen and vaccine-mediated antigen), and therefore should we get a stronger immune response?
If the question is "how do we get the patient more antibodies to fight the infection?" one hypothetical answer is "transfuse monoclonal antibodies" and another hypothetical answer is "give the body something that makes it produce more antibodies." We do the former (with varying levels of effectiveness), have we studied the latter?
*To be clear, I'm a mask-wearing, Moderna-gang wielding intern on the wards... I am curious if this has been studied in animal models with influenza or other viruses, and what with our current knowledge of immunity makes this hypothesis impractical or not possible. Links to studies appreciated (I tried googling this idea for papers and came up empty).
