Tetum Puns

Hi!

I'll be travelling to East Timor for a few weeks and would like to learn a bit of Tetum, the most prominent local language, before going. Does anyone know of any resources for this language?

I was also curious as to the language landscape in the country. I speak English and Portuguese and can 'get around' in Bahasa Indonesia. Which of these will be most useful and in what circumstances? I've just read about the country's recent history... would it be in poor taste to use Indonesian with people?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

The main official language of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste is Tetum, a native language very heavily influenced by Portuguese; Portuguese itself forms the second official language of the country. The majority of the country professes fluency in one of these 2 languages, and it is currently government policy to promote the widespread use of Portuguese.

Minority languages as a whole are protected by the Constitution, although several studies have expressed alarm at the status of the majority of them, and none have been given explicit protection. With little or no official teaching or promotion of the vast majority of languages of Timor-Leste it is likely that extreme language death will occur within a mere 2 generations. As such, the country is at a crossroads. Indonesian remains popular among those educated under Indonesian rule, while those educated since independence are growing up to favour the Portuguese-influenced Tetum; English is widely popular among the highly educated, although they are limited. Despite government promotion, Constitutional protection and heavy international support, fewer than 600 people report using Portuguese in their daily life.

For these reasons the Government of Timor-Leste will announce a new linguistic policy. Arguments in favour of the protection of minority languages have been put to the Government’s experts, and the following information has been given:

The Mambai language, widely spoken in the interior south of the capital, is no longer to be protected by the Government. It is widespread and there is a high amount of transmission to offspring but the vast majority of speakers are capable in Tetum. The Kemak language is a widespread language on the border with Indonesia. However, it is dying out and is not being passed on to the younger generations, who are instead being taught Tetum or in some cases Indonesian. The Baikeno language, the most widely spoken native language in the Oecusse District, remains stable and due to the isolation of Oecusse from Dili the Government expected to see a relative lack of speakers of Tetum. However, this is not the case - the territory is almost entirely fluent in Tetum, which is fortunate. For this reason, Baikeno will cease to be protected by the Government, as it is not necessary. I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Alot of great jokes get posted here! However just because you have a joke, doesn't mean it's a dad joke.

Try telling these sexual jokes that get posted here, to your kid and see how your spouse likes it.. if that goes well, Try telling one of your friends kid about your sex life being like Coca cola, first it was normal, than light and now zero , and see if the parents are OK with you telling their kid the "dad joke"

But no, seriously. I understand rule 7 is great to have intelligent discussion, but sometimes it feels like 1 in 10 posts here is someone getting upset about the jokes on this sub. Let the mods deal with it, they regulate the sub.

For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.

I said "hey look, an escaPEA"

No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!
