How many games that you know of are credited for its design and atmosphere which arose out of technical limitations?

The fog in silent hill is the first example that pops into my head. I don't remember where I read it but using a fog wasn't really the developer's plan for Silent Hill and they implemented it into the game purely out of technical restrictions. When you think about it now Silent Hill series is associated with the fog. How many other games do you know of have used technical limitations to their advantages? Specifically features that eventually lead to define the whole game aesthetically (or thematically).

EDIT: I fucking love this sub. Knew for a fact I would get some answers. :) !

Technical question WTR daughter probes in atmosphere -- work arounds?

If I'm in orbit and I release a daughter probe, then I have two vessels and unless something dramatic happens, like it de-orbits, the daughter probe remains active forever.

If I'm flying in the atmosphere and I release a daughter probe, then I have two vessels UNTIL the one I'm currently piloting leaves the physics range of the other at which point it simply vanishes altogether.

Why is this? I realize there must be some programming issue going on here, but to me it seems like a flaw.

Is there a trick to get around this?

Technical/Progressive Death Metal with emphasis on melody and atmosphere

Sorry for the oxymoronic title (again).

So the ideal thing that I'm looking for would be heavy emphasis on melody and atmosphere (preferably something spaceish), whlist retaining some sort of complexity and harshness. Perfect example would be Fallujah's The Dead Sea.

Bands/Artists that I'm currently avare of close to this request and are atleast somewhat to my liking:

  • Intervals

  • Gru

  • Augury

  • Anomalus

  • Stargazer

  • Aeon of Horus

  • Gorod

  • Aegaeon

  • Allegaeon

Feel free to throw in recommendations even if they don't fill up all my rather odd criteria, maybe I or someone else reading this will like it.

ELI5: What are the technical and physical limitations preventing the use of large scale carbon scrubbers to reduce CO2 in the atmosphere to fight climate change?

I know trees, plants, and even some forms of ocean life can absorb and trap some of the carbon in the atmosphere, but do at a fairly slow pace. So I was wondering if there was a technological process or existing device of some kind, that humans could deploy throughout the globe on a large scale, that could effectively scrub carbon from the atmosphere at a faster rate than the natural carbon sinks. Does the technology already exist? Is it inherently impractical? Too large a scale?

Edit: After talking to some commenters I realize my initial question wasn't phrased specifically enough for the context in which I sought an answer.

So for the sake of clarity, allow me to be more specific. Assume that in the coming years we were to find out that something like a number of positive feedback loops were going to make the impacts of climate change take place at a much faster rate than anticipated (effects predicted to take place in a century, happening in a couple decades), what technology do we have today that we could employ and potential scale up, that could actively work to reduce the amounts of greenhouse gasses, rather than simply gradually slowing their emission into the atmosphere. I'm not concerned about the economic consequences or limitation in this case; just as to whether or not, we have the technology, if faced with shorter timeline, to even be able to proactively reduce CO2 emission in the atmosphere.

What is BabyShibaCoin 🐢 ? Presale of 100 ETH πŸ’Ž | 15th January KYC βœ… Audit βœ… 40% Burned βœ… team tokens locked βœ… | Erc20

BabyShibaCoin is a new initiative aspiring to conquer a special place in the memecoin niche of the crypto market. The following sections summarize the main features of the project:

The token

BabyShibaCoin is an ERC20 token with a total supply of 420 million samples. Of the total amount of coins, 40% have already been burned before the official market launch. The project’s tokenomics is declined as follows:

β€’ Burn Wallet (before launch): 40% of the outstanding coins

β€’ Burn Wallet (after launch): 3% of the liquidity

β€’ Liquidity Pool: 30% of the supply

β€’ Private sale: 3% of the existing tokens

β€’ Presale: 30% of the coins

β€’ Team: 3% of the liquidity (which is locked on Pinksale).

Each transaction on BabyShibaCoin comes with a 5% tax, which goes to Marketing, Development, Team, and buyback funds.

The goal of the project

According to the project team, BabyShibaCoin wants to target Shiba Inu (SHIB) fans and investors, aiming to reach 10% of SHIB market capitalization. Considering that, at the time of writing, SHIB market cap was above $15 billion, the goal is certainly an ambitious one.

The team also made clear that reaching this target would imply a 5000x growth compared to the initial listing value.

To achieve such a target, the project team claims to have a massive marketing wallet, ready to be used in order to spread the rumor about this new initiative.

Audit & KYC

InterFI has run a smart contract audit on the project; this is a typical check that involves most projects in the crypto world. The audit aims to verify that smart contracts do not have any technical bugs that may influence the stability of the project. InterFI completed the test and promoted BabyShibaCoin on this aspect.

Another routine check in the blockchain world is the KYC process, which basically aims to introduce an identity verification layer in the process on the developers. While some crypto projects purposely choose to keep the anonymity of their core team, this is not the case for BabyShibaCoin.

Disclosing the team identity to Pinksale is a choice that generally provides the market with a further guarantee of a project’s seriousness in the blockchain world. If any of the KYCed project’s team scams the community (e.g., followingΒ a rug pullΒ method), their name will be publicly revealed to the public by Pinksale.

Once the identity of the developers is known, any investor can file criminal charges against them.

My Year in Gaming

This was by far the year I played the most in my entire life. I finished 56 games and played 7 more that, for different reasons, I ended up quitting. There were only two I played from this year so those won’t be on the list for obvious reasons. All except Limbo, DOOM 3 and Dead Space were first playthroughs. I shared my views on the majority of these on this sub, so let me know if you’d like more detailed thoughts on a specific game and I’ll post a link for it.

With that said, here is the nutshell version of My Year in Gaming, in order of play:

  1. Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice - Good story, amazing graphics, very stylised, satisfying if repetitive combat, and very unique take on mental health using audio cues. Some puzzles felt a bit obtuse. 8.5/10
  2. UFC 3 - Fun to play with a decent enough balance between career mode, punchy mechanics and fluff to justify a playthrough. 6.5/10
  3. Blair Witch - Most people hate on this game but I actually enjoyed my time with it. It loses a lot of its appeal in the second half but overall it’s well worth a playthrough. It features a really cool camera mechanic and one of the most painful gaming memories I had this year. 7.5/10
  4. Ninja Gaiden II - Hack and slash at its finest. Not as atmospheric as the first one but still pure chaotic fun. The setting is a bit of a turn-off. 8.5/10
  5. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order - Very enjoyable. Beautiful world, simple mechanics and solid combat. Really brings with it that sense of Star Wars adventure. Has a couple of issues and its hub world sometimes feels a bit restrictive, but nothing that takes away from the experience in any meaningful way. 8.5/10
  6. A Plague Tale: Innocence - Surprisingly awesome. Really good story, competent if basic stealth mechanics, good pace and fully realised dark medieval tone. A bit clunky and the characters can get on your nerves at times, but a highly recommended game. Can’t wait for the sequel. 8.5/10
  7. Alien Isolation - Can’t remember the last time I felt such sense of dread in a game. It excels at making you feel uneasy and helpless, and the alien’s AI is one of the biggest accomplishments in recent games IMO. A bit of jank but it was on the whole one of my most memorable horror playthroughs. 9/10
  8. The Witcher 3 - Took me literal hours and several tries to get into it, but after 1 hour in Velen I fell in love with what has now become #2 on my GOAT list. 10/10
  9. Alan Wake

Ocean.

Wargamming’s β€˜Ocean’ map is, by far, the most tactically intuitive and creative map thus created, transcending metaphysical boundaries in order to connect to players on a spiritual and strategic level incapable of being achieved by others of its kind. Despite many of the game’s maps being inspired by real life locations, the β€˜Ocean’ map draws the strongest contextual links to realistic blue water naval combat- emphasising an element of a game that has described itself in the Naval History Magazine as β€œβ€¦Naval History come to life.”. By incorporating realistic, unadulterated conditions of seafaring combat, the β€˜Ocean’ map is able to transcend the technical boundaries of a device screen in order to simulate and immerse those that are thrown into it in a historical experience that draws remarkable parallels with true 20th century naval combat, thus bypassing the simple boundaries of a video game. In addition, by creating a map comprised of absolutely nothing but water, Wargamming has juxtaposed the β€˜Ocean’ map with its more clustered contemporaries, creating a lively, contrasting battle experience that occurs on a backdrop of a battle experience more stereotypically littered with cruiser island abuse. The tactical opportunities that the β€˜Ocean’ map solely offers delivers true to the game’s descriptions, promising β€œβ€¦thrilling naval battles…” (Steam, 2022), β€œβ€¦large scale sea-battles…” (Wargamming.net Wiki, 2022) and a gameplay experience that revolves around making a wide range of β€œstrategies…and tactical decisions.”- by being wholly different and contrasting from any other map in the game, β€˜Ocean’ is capable of opening a fresh, yet undying tactical experience that stays true to the game’s described objectives. Amidst its tactical and historical benefits, the β€˜Ocean’ map also is able immerse its players in a unique and life-changing experience, using the barren desolation of its environment to create a unique atmosphere that is capable of spiritually connecting to its players. By isolating all other distractions aside from water sound effects, β€˜Ocean’ is capable of allowing players to focus on the details of their own ships, making captains rhetorically question their own lives and existence amidst the blank silence of the map- an effect unachievable through its contemporary maps, whose distractions do not offer as complete a metaphysical experience. By offering players a wholly unique historical, tactical and metaphysical effect, the β€˜Ocean’ map is by far t

Arbitrary list of popular lights - Winter Solstice 2021 edition

Happy Solstice!

In honor of Winter Solstice for the northern hemisphere, I've made an updated list of popular lights. Today is the day you're most likely to need a flashlight if you live north of the Equator.

There is no best flashlight, so this is an amalgamation of what enthusiasts have been buying and recommending to others lately along with the author's arbitrary preferences and biases. To search more lights by their attributes, try http://flashlights.parametrek.com/index.html

Where possible, official manufacturer URLs are linked here. Sometimes the manufacturer offers good deals through direct orders, sometimes vendors have the best prices. There are coupon codes available that apply to many of the lights listed.

Some people have asked if they can give me kickbacks or gratuities for maintaining the list. I have two options for that now: I'm hosting a version of this list on my own site with affiliate links, and I've set up a tip jar. Please don't feel obligated to use either.

There is a global supply chain disruption as 2021 comes to an end, so some popular lights are temporarily or permanently unavailable. In many cases, this list reflects current availability.

The Quick List

If you're not interested in flashlights as a hobby, you should probably just get one of these

All of the lights in this section come with a rechargeable battery and have a charger built in to the light. The battery will be a standard size you can buy online from third parties, and the charger will use USB as its power source, though some options do use a special cable. Aside from the A4, all have very good color quality compared to the average LED flashlight, improving your ability to see details. In this section, I've linked good places to buy the lights rather than the manufacturer.

This section is strongly influenced by what is available for purchase within the US. Changes from last time reflect current availability and may be updated before the next list as that changes.

  • Wurkkos FC11 - a general-use light for $30. USB-C charging, and it now has proper C-to-C support. There's a strong magnet in the tailcap, and a pocket clip for carry. A 25mm (1 inch) diameter and 120mm (4.7 inches) long is suitable f

The problem with Death world’s...

Death worlds. The most overused term in the galaxy. I hate it.

We all use it. All nine of the sentient, intelligent life forms in the galaxy ALL thought their world was a β€˜death world’.

And technically speaking yes they are all correct. Every planet wherein sentient life has arisen has been ideal for them and certain death for all alien life forms.

So technically ALL life bearing planets are β€˜death worlds’. Take my planet for example. The gravity is so painfully high compared to the other worlds, any alien life form upon the surface is almost incapable of movement (without mechanical help).

Or then there is Strodam- it’s atmosphere is life bearing and awesome for a myriad of homegrown species and ecosystems; everything from off-world takes one look and dies from all the arsenic.

Yeltrab has vast, abundant oceans, which teem with life and some of the most complex environmental ecosystems known. The self same oceans also tend to dissolve anything that hasn’t had a few billion years evolutionary protection. Even our machines dissolve in the sulphuric goop of Yeltrab’s waters.

Earth has so much oxygen in it, we are constantly amazed the whole planet doesn’t combust. Grea’s electromagnetic storms destroy anything that hasn’t adapted and developed a proximal sense to know when a strike will happen. Urata’s ice cold pitch black oceans contain whole cities at pressures not seen outside of the inner part of gas giants.

And speaking of gas giants? TheπŸ”Έexist as a civilisation floating amidst ammonium clouds and hydrogen thermals. You leave your ship anywhere on T’g and you die very quickly.

And of course the solar radiation that life on Huleian thrives upon, is instantly fatal to any and all living creatures not from Huleian.

Each and everyone of our worlds is a paradise. To us. The residents. The species who grew up there. Each is filled with abundant life in countless myriad forms, which through billions of years of evolution have evolved to live there. And everything else? Dies.

Not nice death either. It’s usually horrific.

So yeah.

β€˜Death worlds’.

Silly name really.

And THEN you have to consider that these places are the literal oasis of life out in space. For each of the nine worlds? There are about 250 million places where it was too brutal for any kind of life to emerge.

Dead worlds.

Either too cold. Or too hot. Or no atmosphere. Or too much atmosphere. Nothing lives on them.

And in-between? The eternal da

I joined the adult's table for the first time this year. Now I wish I never grew up

"It's not blood that binds us but tradition. Customs that we live by, that we cherish and pass on to our children when they grow old enough. Tradition is everything to this family and as you are a part of it, you have no choice but to value and live by our rules."

That's literally what I've been told on the car ride to each family function we've ever had. I'm not kidding. Either my father or mother will say those exact same words. One time I jokingly said them myself before either of them could, but then my mum repeated them anyway acting like she didn't hear me.

They emphasize the importance of tradition so much because they know I can't stand our holiday evening with the extended family. To be honest, I can't stand those people in general. You see, my extended family is incredibly odd. They always have been, forever will be, and every time I see their peculiar faces, I notice even more how strange everything about them is. Especially now that I am growing older.

My grandma was a horrible woman, my uncles are greedy, rude men, my aunts do nothing but pick you apart. And don't even get me started on my cousins. Loud, annoying, and incredibly disgusting little kids that make one evening together feel like being stuck inside a dreadful school cafeteria for an entire month. Luckily, I don't see them often. We only ever get together during the holidays in December. So technically it's not a bad deal, a night spent with the sticky cousins for a year of peace from this family.

My aunt Margaret always hosts. It used to be my grandmother before she passed away a few years ago. As my aunt inherited the house, she also took over the pleasure of being the host for holidays.

"Welcome home my lovelies!" Aunt Margaret stood on the porch of the familiar old house as we got out of the car. Her red hair was blow-dried, she was wearing a violet dress that looked like it should have been left in the fifties as well as grandma's familiar apron with lemons on it.

Mum jumped up the stairs with the kind of energy she never usually has and gave her sister a big hug. Dad followed with the bottle of wine they bought in one hand and a bouquet of flowers in the other.

"Happy holidays, Margie!" He said as he gave her a kiss on the cheek. Everything was exactly the same as always, which means that I was next.

Margaret waited for me as I made the last step up the stairs to the porch, then she gave me a hug so tight that I felt this morning's breakfast moving up to my throat
